lol. That's because he doesn't even know what the PM's name is.
tamanegi
90%+ of people in the world wouldn't know the PMs name and that includes many Japanese.

Japan has a large trade surplus with Trumpland. Ishiba will do all that he can do to deflect tariffs. Good luck.

Here's a few pro-tips for the guy from Tokyo-Tottori:
He'd better come with his hat in his hand, bearing an appropriate golf-related gold-coated, precious stone encrusted gift (a 45-47 motif would be clever). Don't forget one for the First Lady as a sign of gratitude for kindly hosting and supporting the widow of his former boss but not golf related (very, very, very important #1). Make sure you thank her.
Before that he'd better get on the horn to his pals at a certain metal maker and tell them to call it off, pipe down and pay the penalty (over half a billion in cold hard cash).
Then he'd best profusely apologize like only the careerists of his ilk can do so magnificently and pretend it was all a misunderstanding.
Don't make him angry like a certain leader of a European country did recently. Don't try to be too clever by half like that guy up north who is curtains. Don't schmooze. Whatever you do, don't bore him like the leader of another certain big country in Europe. Finesse but not too much. Don't forget the smile. Do some practice dry runs on the handshake (watch the video of Macron getting owned in the handshake department).
And another thing: first impressions count - can't emphasize this enough. Muck this up and there'll be no second chances.
Request a wedge salad (even as a joke - ask for a big one for good measure).
1 - don't forget or bungle this... or you are toast!Jimizo
Are you a pro in this area? It doesn’t come across that way.
Have you read a lot about this topic?

Time to suck up and sell off Japan and back stave your own people in the process.

He hadn’t given Trump any reason to even know or care who he is.
probably best to keep it that way.

If Trump doesn't like what transpires at this meeting, he'll blast a 25% tariff on us.
Also, since Trump just keeps talking about one of Ishiba's predecessors, then he should just talk about how much he liked Obama, Clinton and Lincoln.
OssanAmerica
Obviously you don't either. It's Ishiba.

“Daimyo to the Emperor”
Or rather, Daimyo to the Shogun.

"" to confirm the importance of the bilateral alliance's deterrence and response capabilities.""
Not a good starter Mr. Ishiba, better start wit a different topic.

Not sure what's the rush?? the rest of the world leaders are not so eager they will meet Trump someday at an event or a gulf tournament.
Bob Fosse
Most world leaders will have the same approach to 47; flattery and patience. He’s easy to placate and not so keen on actual work.

Former Prime Minister Abe is a name worth remembering, while Ishiba or Kishida are prime ministers not worth remembering.
The person Japan needs right now for diplomacy is former Prime Minister Abe.
Pro-China Ishiba won't do!

A typical w/a response. I wrote ISHIBA, as did every other poster on this thread. Pretty easy since it's in the article. YOU wrote Ishida.

He should have been briefed on basic info, like the name of the leader he is announcing a visit from. He may have been briefed, or at least an attempt was made to brief him. The demented old fart doesn't listen to anyone who is not talking about him and he really has no interest in anyone who can't line his pockets with ill gotten booty.

"I have great respect for Japan. I like Japan," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
But Trump did not refer to the Japanese prime minister by name.
It doesn't say Pres Trump does not know the Japanese PM's name. It says he didn't refer to him by name.
And as for the "US Steel Deal", I've seen posters critical about the US gov't blocking the deal. The Japanese gov't seems to be just as involved in facilitating from the opposite perspective, so commenting that US gov't should stay out of the deal seems a bit hypocritical of pro-sale posters. Japanese Gov't strongly pursuing sale...US Gov't strongly blocking deal...if you want to say they are both wrong for meddling in private company affairs, that seems fair.

Talk about Abe?
What about? Inept hereditary politician who feigned illness whenever his corruption was questioned?
Abe was irrelevant to anything in world politics. There was no bond between Abe and there will be no bond with the new vassal state leader.

The late former Prime Minister Abe legacy is being a cunningly shrewd political operator.
Trump at G7: Who's who in Merkel's photo?

International policy and affairs, Abe demonstrated a wily knack how to play the short pollical advantage for his own domestic political gain.
I hope Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has a clearly defined carefully thought through agenda.

May you have a great meeting of minds. People need solutions especially those who've been waiting for their loved ones from North Korea.
Pukey2
I hope Ishiba is not going to roll down the bunker and chase after Trump like a lovesick puppy. The last time it happened was pure cringe.
Ricky Kaminski13
for Japan… love it. The poker game started months ago. Ishiba , are YOU ready? There’s no script to remember or read that will work for the T man. You’ve either got it or you don’t! Can’t wait for the press conferences.

If the Prime Minister challenges trump on anything, Japan will be added to the Tariff List.
This is a loose, loose for Japan.
Remember, trump is a Pathological Liar, a Recidefist Grifter, a ConVicted Criminal.

ten to one that President Trump calls him Prtime Minister Babushika, it sounds close enough to Ishiba to Trump's ears. Ishiba/Babushika/Ishiba/Babushika, yup, it could be ingrained easily.
Harder to remember than Honest Abe, Trumps old friend.
