Trump couldn't resolve himself out of a paper bag. Send him back.
Tokyo-Engr
Trump is probably not the right man for the job but some mediation is certainly in order.
Samit Basu
@Chip Star
Japan did tell US to stay out and refused the US invitation for a three-way talk.
The US and the ROK are tag-teaming against Japan.
It is of no accident that Moon administration is now threatening to terminate the GSOMIA, and the US is feeling the pressure to do something and beat some senses into Abe and Kono san and cut it out already.
Yubaru
JT you are doing a disservice here to the readers, you cherry-picked Trumps comments on the situation and make it look like he is being magnanimous.
Trump first chastised Moon for getting him involved, he said he was already involved with NK, and made some other comments, before this part came out!
It's not yet on Youtube, but it was on the early morning news, (Asahi) 5:55AM

President Trump said "If they need me. I'm there." It means the condition of the arbitration is both of the two countries need Mr Trump. SK will need it. But how about Japan.
OssanAmerica
Samit Basu, show us some supporting links instead of just repeating yourself. The United States is not going to take sides. This has been repeated over and over again. Mediating does not mean supporting South Korea, the one country that has unilaterally damaged the US-JPN-SK strategic alliance.
alwaysspeakingwisdom
I wonder how much Trump is going to charge South Korea for his help?
Ganbare Japan!
Trump knows SK started it. He has a to appear to be "neutral", but will take Japans side due to close friendship with PM Abe.
theFu
The threat of Trump weaseling into this issue should be enough for both SK and JP to get along.
Meiyouwenti
Japan doesn't need US support to resolve the trade dispute with South Korea. The trouble with the Koreans is that they always have to learn things the hard way. This is going to be a good lesson for them. So please stay out, Mr. Trump
gokai_wo_maneku
The thought of Trump getting involved is to scarry to contemplate.
oldman_13
Wow, just the right guy for this dispute
(rolls eyes)
Silvafan
Yeah, Abe is as dishonest as Dump. This problem was started by Japan like Dump starts problems then they pretend to solve it by letting everything return to normal.
Dump is not getting the Nobel Peace Prize, and Japan (Abe) is following him down the drain. No wonder Japan has no respect on the world stage!
TokyoTelegraph
"I like both leaders. I like President Moon, and you know how I feel about Prime Minister (Shinzo) Abe. He's a very special guy also,"
Yes, Mr. Abe is a very, very special guy .....
Samit Basu
DRAM price already rose by 25%, and is expected to go up by another 25%.
Expect Samsung and SK Hynix to post healthy profits in the next quarter thanks to Abe san.
kwatt
Trump would not mediate though he can aggravate more. I just wonder why S Korea is panicking and whining desperately about the materials imported from Japan as S Korea can get them from favorable China and others. I heard it.
Samit Basu
@kwatt
The US companies are demanding Trump to intervene because of soaring DRAM and NAND prices.
kwatt
@Samit
Such DRAM and NAND are produced by not only S Korea but also by Taiwan, China and others. I mean S Korea is not only country. World always try not to depend on very important products from one country.
PTownsend
The only way for Trump to take time away from his all-expenses paid by taxpayers trips to one of his golf courses and get involved in this dispute is for him to
find a way for Ivanka, Inc. and the others in the Trump syndicate to increase their personal fortunes.
Trump's in way over his head on international issues. As well as domestic.
showchinmono
Yep Trump first chastised " How the heck many issues do we need to get involved and help you with? We have been getting involved already helping you with NK"
https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_international/articles/000159914.html

Korean tattletale diplomacy as always, begging for help in tears, at the same time, pretending to stand tough. What a shame. They never change 2000 years.
OssanAmerica
Mr. Trump said South Korean President Moon Jae-in asked him to step in, causing the president to interject: “How many things do I have to get involved in?”

Donnie - you're dumb so you probably won't listen to me, but stay away from this one - it's a "no-winner", kind'a like your presidency....
Force the politicians on both sides to confront their own pure partisan, nationalistic rhetoric against the other, and level with their people - Japan and S Korea have shared interests, share a similar culture, are closely economically intertwined, and are neighbors.
Force them on their own to look forward instead of always backward.
If you insert yourself, no matter how even handed you are, both will say you're favoring the other just to get more votes...
You know, like your racist rhetoric about the Democratic Congresswomen...
Rick Hepner
Please accept my apologies to the people of Japan for the intrusion of President Trump into your discussion with South Korea. He will accomplish nothing positive and in fact may harm the best efforts of both nations.
lincolnman
Donald Trump: Never met a bad situation he could not insert himself into and make absolutely worse....
"Let me help - I've had six bankruptcies and lost over $1 Billion over 10 years...howz that for a record of success..."
"I also traffic in racial stereotypes and tropes - any you'd like me to use here?"
"I'm sure I can help bring you two together...mark my words, mark my words"...
SJ
@kwatt
Because it is a kind of kamikaze attack in the form of trade war. The psychological impact of kamikaze attack was already proven to be tremendous.
SJ
@Rick Hepner
I do not think it is an uninvited intrusion. Trump is the mentor of Abe in every respect. In this case, Abe is just imitating him, I mean, using trade for political purposes. Thus, Trump may come to advise his pupil.
serendipitous1
Oh yes, the creator of Make America Hate Again is such a great deal maker and arbitrator! Humpty Trumpty needs to focus on the uphill battle of trying to stay out of prison.
Peter14
If Trump attempts to mediate, SK and Japan will be at war by years end. Keep him away at all costs.
Trump is the destroyer of everything. He has destroyed politics in the US. Trump has destroyed the credibility of the US on the world stage. Only other despots and dictators respect Trump, everyone else loathes him or at best tolerates him with maximum effort. And Trump divides the American people rather than unite them.
Trump = Loser!
serendipitous1
And Trump is just thinking about making an opportunity to play golf with Abe again.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
If Trump gets involved Japan and SK will be at war. The problem is Japan is under US occupation, so Washington will have to approve any agreement.
Serrano
Trump couldn't resolve himself out of a paper bag. Send him back.
Lessee... new and better trade deals with Canada and Mexico - check. I could go on and on.
By the way, send him back to where exactly?
Trumpty needs to focus on the uphill battle of trying to stay out of prison.
Noooo, but that is the focus of some Democrats. We have a real AG now.
smithinjapan
This should be funny. I wonder, if Trump says to Abe that’s Japan needs to sign a formal, official, apology (no compensation money), will Abr cry? We know he won’t stand up to Trump, that’s for sure.
sunfunbun
Hey guys, let’s go to my place, and play golf. Closest to the pin wins.
kwatt
It seems to me Trump would mediate if US can make a lot of money/profit when he did it. Otherwise he would not, because he is rather a business man than ordinary president. Trump might say the mediation is endless wasting time and money.
kwatt
Japan has warned S Korea for at least 3 years. Every year Japan and S Korea used to have an official meeting of trade in Tokyo as Japan exports a lot of very high tech materials and others. But S Korean officials did not come for trade meeting any more for years, even Japan called times. That's why.
simon g
everything he touches goes to crap. better he stay at home and stick to his big Macs
Open Minded
As far as I know Trump has not resolved anything so far. If I am wrong please provide facts.
But he is definitely unbeatable in the messing up arena.
shonanbb
The guy is a business man. Let him do his job.

Trump Bemoans Request to ‘Get Involved’ in Seoul-Tokyo Dispute
Each media has different message. This is not about Trump but about Moon.

Does Trump have any idea what the hell he's talking about?
He's so full of himself.
Serrano
everything he touches goes to crap.
Yeah, what a crap economy we have! It sucks, haha, lol

Basically, Trump needs both Japan and South Korea involved in his Iran thing. Maybe this dispute was born to hide this fact.
"I helped them, now they must help me". I can already imagine the developments...The public opinion of both the Countries will accept their involvment in Iran more easily this way.
garypen
The US has ~30,000 military personnel stationed at multiple bases in SK and ~50,000 in Japan.
The 30,000 military personnel in the country of 51 million (1 per 1700 people) is much higher per capita than the 50,000 in the nation of 125 million (1 per 2500 people.)
So, if either country is "occupied" in this scenario, it would be South Korea.
Of course, those numbers are too low to be considered an occupying force in either country.
garypen
For many millions of Americans, it does. The stock market is not an indicator of the economic health of a country or its residents.

When he does his job as a businessman, he often fails.
Trump Casinos, Trump Air, Trump Steaks, Trump University, Trump Magazine, Trump Mortgage, Trump Vodka, The Plaza Hotel, NJ Generals and the USFL football league, etc etc...

Admit it happened, Japan. Apologize. Build a monument. Do a concert. Let Japanese volunteers do good things in So Korea. Write a poem. Cry a little...
Serrano
For many millions of Americans, it does. The stock market is not an indicator of the economic health of a country or its residents.
It's one indicator. Others are GDP and unemployment. Those are looking pretty good now.
Of course we still have huge problems and some people are still unable to find work but overall most people are better off than they were 2 and a half years ago.
Chuck Azio
This is in total contrast to what trump said a few days back.
trump said I have NO TIME for other countries disputes.
Being a cynic, I will suggest that $$$ for trump is now involved.
trump does nothing unless there is votes and or cash for trump.
WilliB
Of course, the CNN watching "orange man bad" crowd will immediately get triggered, even by a harmless remark. Of course, if Obama or another establishment annointed figure said the same it would be just fine. By now, I am just yawning, it is so predictable.
By the way, "Pttownsend": "The only way for Trump to take time away from his all-expenses paid by taxpayers trips to one of his golf courses"
.... you might want to consider that his own golf courses are a lot cheaper than the rented ones that Obama flew to, and this guy donates his government salary to charity. This particular line of attack is even more ridiculous than the other CNN talking points.

The man who unilaterally killed the nuclear peace treaty with Iran says he is going to help South Korea and Japan resolve their differences? Sure, and the moon is made out of green cheese.

Wow, set the fire then offer the water...................child's play.
