Abe is weak sauce, basically folded like a paper towel. How did this benefit Japan? How is Abe a leader just to blatantly give in to the US.

Mr Abe. trump is not your friend. trump is not your allie . trump is a liar, a cheat, who will use and abuse you and your country.

trump has just displayed his true colors by saying THREATS TO JAPAN MADE BY ME(trump) made for successful talks, in other words Abe san, trump made you look weak.

It pains me to watch my adopted country get treated badly by a tyrant and a gangster.

Lol so the threat of sanctions made the other party enter negotiations.

Thats a bit more like it.

The USA doesn't need Japanese cars as much as Japan needs to sell cars to the USA. Who do you think would if done a better job negotiating with the Donald?

I am observing what Trump is doing interestingly. All the common senses and wisdom preached by scholars, critics, medias are easily being knocked down by this man. They may not be wise people. They are a group of chicken hearted who make living pretending they know everything.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

It isn't that bad. Media just try to spin the story and make it look worse than it is. Let's just see how it goes from here on.

Japan and US has always been working together and deals had always been secretly made. US is force to keep up a strong front because of all the recent politics problems and Japan as it's ally in Asia can only give the support. That US-China trade war is already causing major problems in the economy and we really don't need to also get into a conflict with our ally to cause even more problems. Our country is experiencing a pretty hard year already with all these natural disasters and climate change. Still so much to rebuild and recover. We don't have time to play these silly trade games. It will only drag on forever and waste time.

Small countries depend on trade. Japan can't do anything about it.

Kurofune. It always works.

basically NAFTA by another name

Yes. However by Trump renaming NAFTA to USMCA, he has allowed the option now forever called USCAM!

Basically we lost to trump because our dear leader is more stupid.

"And very importantly, he said, 'Many more are coming,' because they have an incentive now to be here."

On November 1, 1982, the first Japanese car rolled off a U.S. assembly line here in Marysville, Ohio. It was a four-door Honda Accord which was given a special license plate of "USA 001."

Trump has a couple screws loose..maybe more than a couple BUT he is not wrong on everything. He makes valid points which need addressing. In this case fair trading practices.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

When international trade negotiations are seen as a win or lose situation, we are all losers.

"Without tariffs we wouldn't be talking about a deal,"

> No argument there, unless pushed Japan would have dragged its feet as always.

Agree 100% with marcelito

MAGA is going to be MANGA with Trump. N of not to make the anything.

Schopenhauer: "They are a group of chicken hearted who make living pretending they know everything."

Like Abe, who folded faster than any "leader" on the planet.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Well done President Trump, although I think that he should have been much tougher on Japan.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Probably true. Certainly Japan keeped putting off talks until that threat was made evident.

Japan has a lot of protectionist measures in place in agriculture and other countries, like Australia, have been able to negotiate some alleviation over time in those measures. Should be some room to negotiate with the U.S on this.

Fundamentally the U.S is a key auto's market for Japanese firms who know they can out compete poor U.S car manufactures. How many are left now? Ford and GM? America lost that fight ages ago.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/26/ford-is-basically-giving-up-on-us-car-business-and-gm-is-not-far-behind.html

Japan must maintain access to the U.S market since there position in China will always be subject to the whims of China's protectionism. Might be able to sell a few cars now but under China 2025 and beyond? You can bet the market will be crafted to suit up and coming Chinese manufactures.

The Japanese just like the Americans and Europeans know this and know it well.

He basically bullied Japan... like he bullies everyone. Loathsome, vile man-child

Just put the truth where it belongs and its only 1 country that is taking advantage of everyone, yep China. Thanks to Trump, the US has a replacements and send that junk back to China. Come on who hasn't bought something made in China where it didn't last more than 1 or 2 times of use.

I bought a lovely Chinese (and China made) watch a couple of years ago. I have worn it every day sinse. Still keeps perfect time, and is very durable.

I bought a cheap Chinese food processor when I got married 23 years ago. It was ¥2,950 - stickers still on the box. We bought it for the short term, intending to get a "good one" later.

Well after 100s of hours of use, doing almost everything short of mixing concrete, it just keeps on keeping on.

Couldn't say the same about my Made in Japan hand mixer where the push button switch broke a month over the 1 year warranty and to fix was almost the same as a new one - ¥9,000. My Sharp smartphone broke down 4 times in 3 years. My Huawei hasn't missed a beat in almost 2 years (fingers crossed). Go figure.

The moral of the story is good and not so good and bad products are made everywhere. Demonizing China as the maker of junk should be very carefully espoused.

I don't think Trump ever traded cards as a kid, otherwise he would know what the word means.

It was beneficial for Japan to fold in this case. They know the US wasn’t getting a good deal

And lest we forget;Japan is protected by the US militarily so who gets the better deal here?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Come on who hasn't bought something made in China where it didn't last more than 1 or 2 times of use.

As with most things, if you buy cheap stuff you get cheap stuff. I bought a good quality all stainless steel meat grinder from China that wasn’t cheap and it’s working great.

For once I agree with Trump. It was quite a clever ploy to make others countries realize the US is not their money pit. It is a similar situation to the TPP. Many countries, especially Japan requested special exemptions from the TPP and the US pulled out altogether. As much as I hate to admit it, I have a newfound respect for Trump.

Slapping tariffs on importers who pay their workers $16 or less is a stroke of brilliance. Not a big fan of Trump, but nice to see a leader who's willing to take a stand against the greed that fuels globalization.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

After years of whining about not raising minimum wages, Trump sets one of $16 on the auto industry.

It's actually a good move for the workers, but it exposes Republican hypocrisy in supporting something they've whined about forever whenever a Democrat put it forward.

Slapping tariffs on importers who pay their workers $16 or less is a stroke of brilliance.  great for domestic consumption but not for exports, its just raising cost for manufacturers wholl keep production in China and asia to service exports to the rest of the world while , just making AMerican manufactured exports more uncompetitive

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

"...its just raising cost for manufacturers..."

There's no point in lowering manufacturing costs through lower wages, because then you end up with millions of workers who have no money to spend on goods and services in your own economy and so your own economy tanks, while a tiny number of multimillionaires turn into billionaires and you become a banana republic.

Germany realizes this, which is why it can sell German manufactured products around the world while also taking good care of its workers.

"threat" means that Trump is a bully. Why can't he negotiate the deal? He wrote a book about that. Oh yes, it was ghost written. Did he read it?
