Trump visit likely to boost Abe's image at home, at least for now

Not many countries around the world where a Trump visit will boost the leader's image at home. Says a lot.

Why? Because Japan's masters smiled favorably upon them after Abe sucked up enough? I mean seriously... even wingers should be upset by how much Abe is willing to give up and suck up to Trump, because even though it will get them the Constitutional reform they want, it's making them even more of a lapdog than before.

And for those against Constitutional reform, this meetings sealed it, as it did many other pet projects Abe has laid out for the nation, including possibly being cannon fodder for the US invasion of NK. Abe is going to be forced to change trade rules, including maybe even agriculture, and how will that win him support? He's going to have to let in more American autos despite them not being wanted. How will that help? He's going to now spend TRILLIONS on weapons instead of his promised focus on education. How's that going to help? He's further alienating Japan with neighbors and will make it impossible to get the abductees back (not like it was possible before), so how are the even more expectant people going to be happy?

I don't see how this would make any Japanese happy unless they are so utterly insecure with themselves they need Trump of all people to view them favorably.

Kudos to Abe on his relationship building with Trump. The government has gone to great lengths to get friendly with Trump and it is working wonders. Even Trump's rhetoric over Japanese trade is weak, which is a major win by the government here. As long as NK exists, I doubt anything serious will happen with trade

Trump got to play golf, eat a steak, and meet his idol Pikotaro.

Abe gets shiny new toys, and got to remind the population to be scared of North Korea.

I'm sure both are happy !

Japanese general public is easy to forget even recent politics problem

,despite unsolved.

Yeah? I don't know how this can be true when Trump went out of his way to snub Abe on arrival!

Is this official government propaganda?

A huge majority of people outside the US see Trump as a buffoon and dangerous and anyone who worships, trusts and believes as simple or stupid.

Well well, you need strong leaders around here at the Pacific.

Thats called fake news.

PM Abe 's image is already high . It will get further boost on strengthening of close military relations in the field defence production with strategic partners in the region which will enormously enhance Japan's capabilities to defend and protect its sovereignty against aggressive moves of its neighbours.

I felt bad watching Abe standing and waiting for Ivanka outside the restaurant.

The smile plastered on Abe's face when he looks up longingly at Trump with his spaniel-eyes and ears cocked to catch the next sound bites of Trumplish from His Master's Voice, all seem to indicate that he's expecting to be thrown a bone or two from the Great Orange Father in Washington: a green light to change the Constitution? missiles? nukes? On the other hand, if Shinzo's demeanor only signifies an innocent desire for a special friendship with dearest Donald, he clearly doesn't understand that the kid from Queens is as reliable a tomodachi as a rattlesnake from Arizona.

His image will be boosted by a telephone survey of 1000, which 700 will respond. They are chosen by a amukuradi newspaper and will announce his popularity increased from 43% to 52%. He is on a winning streak, unlike all normal Japanese.

According to Pew, Trump is seen favourably in Russia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Kenya and Tanzania.

Most of the other countries polled seem to see him as a tit.

Trump still has more favorable rating than Hillary. Why in the world did the DNC rig the primary to get her in?

Trump makes me so embarrassed. He is the embodiment of corrupt crony capitalism, and a sexual predator to boot. Such a disgraceful man.

Abe is the perfect island politian, with all the history to look up to

match or different?

Either Trumps lips are continuously curled into that position with every second syllable he utters or the media delights in seeking out those particular shots. Its almost like a subliminal message in a TV commercial. They really don't have to, most of us were clear on who he was prior to becoming the Don of America.

Abe's charm offensive began shortly after the U.S. presidential election, when he raced to Trump's residence in New York to become the first foreign leader to sit down with the president-elect.

Charm offensive? Is that a euphemism for sycophancy?

I think for the next U.S. election as well as the Japanese election we should look as the Japan Today posters as potential candidates. Would certainly be interesting

if the jobs and stocks keep going up, and if the Dems rig their primaries again, Trump will be re-elected. Bernie is the most favorably polling politician right now and the Dems still refuse to endorse him as their next candidate = how to lose an election...

Haters gonna hate; losers gonna lose. You lost - get over it. MAGA

What image of Abe will be boasted ? There are so many wars in the Asia and in the world in the past 100 years, which war did Japan help to end, to prevent, peacefully ?

Graham DeShazo: My question: does Shinzo make Donnie wear a condom, or does he let him bareback? With this level of submission, lube is out of the question.

Trip must have gone well. The JT Lefties are losing it.

The attention Trump gave to the plight of the abductees and their families was a good move on his part. As for Abe - or any Japanese PM - they have no choice but to suck up to the American president. Japan has no significant allies in Asia except for the US. The only way Japan can getting out of their subservient position is to build up a credible military that can stand up to China. The only way to do that is to have nuclear weapons. Even changing article 9 of the Constitution would not change this basic reality.

dcog9065: Even Trump's rhetoric over Japanese trade is weak, which is a major win by the government here. As long as NK exists, I doubt anything serious will happen with trade

Actually it's the exact opposite. As-long-as NK exists, Japan will depend upon the US nuclear deterent against NK nuclear weapons advances. Trump can leverage that existential threat to his advantage when it comes to economic and trade issues with Japan.

wolfpack, Why should Japan stand up against China ? Just because China is Japan's neighbor ?

@Akie: Some people don't know China and Japan have been best trade partners for many years. Ignore them. Together they own huge US debt bonds.

toshiko, Abe is a disappointment but Japanese and Chinese relationship is resilient. 3000 years written history, common culture and common genes, there is no way Abe can break that.

While that view may be held widely, it is mostly by people who speak English with at least a high school level of copmprehension who are readily able to distinguish mature intelligent English usage from 5th grader level garbage. However when his words are filtered through a translator he doesn't come off sounding like a buffoon.

Wonder why President Trump's suit is so crumpled?

There is nothing to worry about. The Japanese abductees are living comfortably in Pyongyang according to witnesses.

There is no need to rescue them, since they are better off in Pyongyang than in Japan.
