Some people say "pie in sky", but JSF would protect Japan's future space resources. For instance, Space Station, colonies, and mining for rare earth on planets and moon.

People get lonely at the ISS but there's a vacancy for a clown :)

Japanese Space Defence Force? Oh please say yes... orange or pale blue uniforms, crash helmets and ray guns, yay!!

A Japan Space Force (JSF) would be a logical step for the next arm of Japan Military. If Japan starts now, it could dominate Space along with USA as number one partner. Japan can't afford it. It has a massive and increasing debt, a shrinking tax base, and more urgent problems to address.

I call for better defense against Mother Nature!

Good to hear Japan taking modern defense seriously. China and Russia, although third world countries, are masters of cyber warfare, so these morons need to be taken out in the virtual realm. Cyber attack can cripple their economies back decades.

All modern conventional warfare relies on satellites, so if one can take out another's satellites, the game is up for them, so space policy is pragmatic and far overdue

seif

I think you’ve completely missed the point. Humans innovate.

With an attitude like that, we’d may as well stay in the bronze age.

why are conservatives so scared of space all of a sudden? There's nothing

To those of you who think a space force is not necessary, I got one word for you...

STARTREK

A space force is a complete waste of money. If there is any civilization advanced enough to find us before we find them and to be able to travel all the way here, no matter what kind of force we have to defend earth, they would crush us in seconds.

the biggest achievement of humanity in space was to go to the moon. Even traveling to the closest planet to earth would require at least half a year.

Abe and politics aside, better cyber security is definately needed.

Wrong, big wrong. What Japan needs is a stronger cooperation capabilities. Japan already lost in digital technology, can't afford to be isolated again.

Another 5 year plan outdated already. Decision makers really need to be more nimble. Hard to do when those that make these plans are one shuffle away from needing assistance to stand let alone grasp it's 2018.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday called for strengthening Japan's defense capabilities in new fields such as cyberspace and outer space

It will be especially vital for Japan to maintain an advantage in the new realms

This sounds like Trump has been on the phone demanding a Japanese contribution to his bizarre Space Force.

And just what are these "new realms," Shinzo? Mordor, Narnia, Badfort, The Land of Green Ginger?

Japan's space force? Lets just copy America!?
