Abe calls on justice minister to quit for receiving funds from foreigner

Newly appointed Justice Minister Keishu Tanaka is under fire after his office confirmed this week that he received donations totaling 420,000 from a company operated by a Taiwanese national. The news prompted Liberal Democratic Party President Shinzo Abe to call for Tanaka's resignation.

Tanaka reiterated at a news conference Friday that he has no intention of resigning over the revelation. His office said he had returned all of the money that was donated over a four-year period starting in 2006, TV Asahi reported. Analysts say the donations may have violated a law that makes political contributions illegal if made by foreign individuals or entities.

According to Tanaka's office, the Kanagawa branch of the ruling Democratic Party received annual payments of 60,000 yen to 150,000 yen from the Taiwanese donor based in Yokohama. The payments were made to the minister's home district branch from 2006 to 2009, TV Asahi reported.

Last year, two similar cases involving Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's predecessor, Naoto Kan, and Seiji Maehara, hit the headlines nationwide. Kan claimed not to have been aware that the donor was not a Japanese national. Maehara resigned from his post.

Tim - it's easy for Zainichis to get citizenship. Your info is about 30 years out of date.

Japan should go easy on Taiwanese and North Korean owned businesses since technically, they don't actually exist diplomatically in Japan.

I'm assuming these "foreign" nationals who make the contributions are actually 在日 (Zainichi) Taiwanese and/or Koreans who were born and raised in Japan but cannot get Japanese nationality. Does anybody know anymore about this?

Back on topic please.

Oh, c'mon - how can you not remember the Great Fukuda? His regime embarked upon some groundbreaking ... ummm...administrative reforms. He was cruelly ousted by faceless backroom men in the LDP. They were great times those 9 months, the glory days of "Cool Japan"...

Fukuda? What did he do? If anyone should come back it is Kan!

I see what you're saying , tmarie. Tanaka is good. But I'm sticking with the Bring Back Fukuda movement. The Great Fukuda will get the country going again, and it'sonly a matter of time before this genki 92-year-old firebrand is resurrected. He achieved so much more in his glorious 9 months than this Abe upstart. Geez he was a good leader.

Keep alienating the foreigner Abe, that'll get you far. Idiot. Maybe you should also cry about the folks in your party who get money from mommy and daddy? Let's see..... where to begin... Hatoyama? Ishihara? Nah.... how about Koizumi....? Oh right, daddy paving the way is okay, mommy footing the bill is no problem... A FOREIGNER???? AHHHH!

I had an interesting discussion with a few locals tonight - NONE could tell me when these 'good old days of Japan" were and they ALL agreed (all six of them) that Abe was washed up and needed to go. None of them have any faith in ANY Japanese politician. I disagreed, Tanaka. She'll try and save what is left but I fear Japan is far too gone.

Bravo, tilt the scales on your favor.

Heck just toss out the JDP and bring back the LDP with some strong leadership to end the PRC threat.

Very funny. I take it you're joking.

Abe should resign as LDP President for being a jerk.

Agreed 100% Serrano. Also, Dropkick Abe has some disabilities due to his health problems - he is medically and mentally unfit to ever be in a position of power. The day Japan elects this invalid as Prime Minister is the day Japan officially concedes defeat as a relevant nation in the world. Scary thing is, there are no people in Japan that are stand-out candidates as leaders.

yasukuni - Good idea!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Good idea Serrano. Then the other LDP guys can resign because they voted Abe back in.

Abe should resign as LDP President for being a jerk.

Okay, so Abe's back and he's already calling for the resignation of a cabinet minister.

Can Japanese one day realize that you don't solve everything by resigning, firing, putting pressure on to resign? How much time in Japanese politics is spent on telling cabinet ministers and Prime Ministers to resign.

Just get on with fixing the country guys. (I meant "this beautiful country")

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Well naturally. The new cabinet is already a few days old. We need some new cabinet ministers. I say just do a reshuffle. What would Japan do if no cabinet ministers resigned or were stood down - they might just stay for months, and we can't have that!

Foreigners or not, accepting funds or donations is against the law especially the government officials. LP or LDP got too many scandals to be investigated. Asking him just to quit is not enough punishement. I wonder what happened to the old Japanese custom of Hara-Kiri if a Japanese give shame and bad name to their family and relatives.

But if they do that then i guess that would mean that the government would have to admit to being racist. hmmm

pot calling the kettle black

Because the person who donated the money is NOT a foreigner. They are just not ethnically japanese. Their nationality is Japanese.

It says, a Taiwanese national.

Japan needs to learn to use a different word than foreigner. Because the person who donated the money is NOT a foreigner. They are just not ethnically japanese. Their nationality is Japanese.

But if they do that then i guess that would mean that the government would have to admit to being racist. hmmm

Well, Hatoyama was under intense pressure for the same thing, so more par for the course, I guess. I'm willing to bet LDP members get heaps from foreigners and/or their firms as well.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The candidate of the LDP with its history of taking money from anyhwere is predestined to make this attack. This really will clean up Japanese politics once and for all!

Justice Minister Keishu Tanaka needs to be sacked.

Heck just toss out the JDP and bring back the LDP with some strong leadership to end the PRC threat.

The portion of my taxes that the LDP and DPJ take to subsidise their crooked operations are also illegal donations and I want the money back.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

These numbers are a pittance. But as usual, it's more about the phobia of foreigners and less about the law.
