Abe = zero credibility in Putin's (and many other people's) eyes.

This issue is going to be resolved amicably through mutual discussion in the near future.

I can assure you, that this problem won't be solved during Mr.Abe premiership. Japan needs much more pragmatic person in foreign affairs.

First of all stop talking as if this is some plan of Putin to annex Ukraine. It's not! It is the US interfering in an area that is basically part of Russia's history and culture. The US spent 5 billion dollars on regime change in Ukraine and reneging on its promises to Russia after the end of the Cold War is installing military installations all along Russia's border. The US is the one annexing Ukraine!

The US is completely out of control creating failed states everywhere it goes. So don't go blaming Putin, who has been a model of patience with the US.

As for Abe, he is an idiot and simpleton, pure and simple. He should scold the US for causing trouble, not Putin. But he is merely a US puppet, so what do you expect?

"Abe called on Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday to play a constructive role in finding “peaceful and diplomatic solutions” to the crisis in Ukraine..." Mr. Abe has done so well with the Russia-Japan territory problem that he believes he can change Putin's plan to annex the Ukraine. I think not.

Relations between Moscow and Tokyo have been strained for decades over the status of four Pacific islands near Japan’s north coast, known as the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan.

Soviet troops seized the islands just after Japan surrendered in World War II and Tokyo says the islands are now illegally occupied by Russia.

China says the same thing about the Senkaku islands. Funny that. Russia has previously offered to return two of the 4 Southern Kurils islands. Japan will not get all 4 from Russia (to Russian minds, taking the islands was payback for Japan starting the 1904-1905 war) Time for Japan to accept that, do a deal, and put the issue to bed

Abe has not done much "bonding"with his neighbors...he doesn't have a good enough track record to inspire Putin me thinks.

how to define "near future?" Atleast half a century, i guess.

Ha ha, Japan's nationalists keep telling the Chinese and Koreans to "get over it." Maybe they need to get over it and all..

Well this is the same Abe who went to kiss Putin's ass during the opening ceremony for the Sochi Olympics in order to get cheaper gas.

Some people are really just a... h...

During a 30-minute evening teleconference, Abe requested that Putin

First and foremost question WHO is Mr Abe to request something from Mr Putin? For me it's a little bit strange.

Mr Abe has a lot of question to discuss with Mr Putin (concerning Russia and Japan ) but request something ?

Request something concerning East Europe ? ?? May be better to talk about Far East ?

May be better to meet Mr Putin personally ?

But he flew over Russia in Europe than from Europe to Japan one more time over Putin's head....

Than he made a short phone call to Moscow...

Burning Bush "What specifically should Putin do?"

First of all, to forget about Sovereignty and become a boneless U.S. puppet, like Abe.

But Putin has said that Russia wil now offer Japan no territory; which just goes to prove that Putin has no intention of returnng any of the stolen island back to Japan

Putin is a real hard a$$ and he's dangerous in the sense that he apparently wants to restore Russia to its glory days and previous imperial status. Albright recently said something to the effect, Putin doesn't seem to realize that what's best for Russia's interests is dependent on a peaceful and cooperative relationship with the West.

Abe's just doing what all politicians do so well, pis$#%ing in the wind. However, there are some Japanese who are upset with Abe's tough stance on Putin because they say it's a setback for getting those northern islands back into the Japanese fold. I've told them they'd never get them back anyway regardlessly, but they just hope against hope for a miracle.

PM Abe's move to call on Mr Putin to make progress on resolving Northern Territories issue with Russia is a right step in the right direction. This issue is going to be resolved amicably through mutual discussion in the near future.

Next island to be retrieved from the Russians, Sakhalin? Were these Kurile Islands Japan's for many centuries before the Russians took them? The word really needs to agree on some sort of criteria for deciding sovereignty - job for the United Nations perhaps.
