Abe is hardly in a position to talk about the rule of law. What an about face though! All of Japan was stunned by Trump's victory. At least two people told me it's the end of the world.

Get ready for a rude awakening Japan. Trump won't coddle you nor any country for that matter going forward.

Unshakeable allies? That remains to be seen with Trump now in the US driving seat!

The whole letter is pretty nauseating reading. The first paragraph is all about Abe telling Trump how smart and skilled he was, how he used that smarts to not only build a major business but MAKE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE US ECONOMY, and how he could hardly wait to meet him.

He's rushing to New York next week to pay a visit. Can we say lap dog?

@dcog9065 Agreed: Trump winning will finally allow Japan to seriously charter an independent defense policy instead of being a wimp hiding behind the U.S. all the time. The U.S. also needs a stronger defense partner in Asia than what Japan is currently. I always felt Japan's main population was far too left leaning in general and Trump's victory will ensure a more normalization of the populous.

Japan can certainly create a splendid and disciplined military and weapons to defend her territory against China and N. Korea. One thing about the Japanese, is that they are resilient and can adapt very quickly to new situations if rallied to do so properly.

Why not say Japan-the only country to attack America causing them to enter the war?

Japan-the only country to be cornered to attack America causing them to enter the war.

I don't think Japan can rely on the US anymore with Trump. It's probably time Japan develops a huge Nuke arsenal and announces a first strike right. Japan's breakout period is supposedly only a few weeks, so this should be easily accomplished

Abe and most world leaders have egg on their face today and have no choice but to revert to their usual PCness. A few turncoats have even welcome this result.

So glad Trump won!

I express my heartfelt congratulations on your election as the next president of the United States,” Abe said

And we don't believe one word YOU said.

The stability of the Asia-Pacific region, which is the driving force of the global economy, brings peace and prosperity to the United States,” Abe said.

Translation: Please master! Don't forsake us! Pleeeeaaaasssee!!

And the best part- Drum roll please.......Clang

Japan and the United States are unshakeable allies connected by common values such as freedom, democracy, basic human rights and rule of law.”

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!! insert "lack of" and you will be spot on..

The most embarrassing item was the proposed February meeting between Abe and Clinton.

You must be referring to this article.

https://www.japantoday.com/category/politics/view/abe-may-visit-u-s-in-feb-if-clinton-wins-presidential-race

WASHINGTON — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe may visit the United States for a summit meeting in late February if Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton wins next week’s presidential race, Japan-U.S diplomatic and party sources said Thursday.

It is a news from Washington. "Japan-US diplomatic sources" mean the State Department of US and "party sources" mean Democratic Party of US.

It is a wishful thinking by Americans in Washington.

so he's gonna make that american great wall? I'll get the porcorns.

and japan/asia may not be a pleasant place to live for you american expats now, just like the mexicans in america.

I think this annoys me more about Abe, more than the Abenomics and Everything's Under Control, because those actions and decisions were based on him thinking about his country and thinking on his own. RIght or wrong, he was acting on his own.

But this abused girlfriend who keeps going back to the bad boy-attitude is so frustrating. This I'm with America no matter what they do or what they say about me or what they want me to do, I'm always by your side thing is pathetic.

Have some pride, man. Isn't that what Japan is always accused of having too much of? I know I'm asking for too much, but be smarter.

Trump don't like Japan

It is good for Okinawa and rest of Asia. Phillipines President Duterte recently called Obama as Son of W@@@@ before. PhillipInes was closed ally of US and hosted US bases. Japan should follow Phillipines independent foregin policy for asking US bases to leave from Japan. Abe will not call Trump with insulting words. Japanese politicians are polite , civilized and matured.

Uncomfortable truth is Phillipines has already lost some maritime territories. US is very reluctant to get high noon with China. If Japan get high noon with China or Russia, US bases in Okinawa will be still watching Sony TVs as Trump said before.

Trump will be more focused on domestic affairs instead of Senkaku adventure. Japan has very high debt and no longer afford to foot the bills of bases.

It is win win for both US and Japan should get divorce like Trump former wives. US will never or ever shed their blood for Japanese territorial interests. Unlike Middle East Japan has no oil.

Trump will be more diplomatic with Russia too. Japan and rest of US allies still sleep well whether Trump can deliver his promises or not! Life goes on!

President comes and gone. Okinawa still has not changed It is time for change!

Abe's staff were on their way to set Abe up with a Clinton meeting but now that Trump has won, suddenly it's an about face! The Japanese pundits were useless as their inability to understand Americans is ......zero!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I hope Trump places ambassadors by their ability to speak the host country language and have an in depth background in the history of said countries. Get rid of Kennedy. Useless.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

You're Fired !!

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Abe...what did anyone really expect him to say?

6 ( +9 / -3 )

While the world is becoming unstable, it is lucky that Japan has a good leader and the political situation solid.

-15 ( +4 / -19 )

Trump don't like Japan.

We'll see the true Donald once he visits Japan as president.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

No surprises here then.

The most embarrassing item was the proposed February meeting between Abe and Clinton. Geez no one else (as far as I know) made such a prophetic gaffe. Japan has nothing to worry about; all will be well with President Trump. And if it can be argued that Japan should pay a bit more towards the alliance (thoughts of the Yoshida doctrine come to mind), then so be it. Interesting times ahead. The status quo presented only a descent into something undesirable. Either speed up the latter or move on to a new path.

Another day, another photograph of the mug Abe pointing north while the economy heads south.

Japan and the United States are unshakeable allies connected by common values such as freedom, democracy, basic human rights and rule of law.”

Except that you and your backers don't believe in any of them and are actively trying to destroy them in Japan.

Japan—the only country to suffer atomic bomb attacks— Still playing the victim. Why not say Japan-the only country to attack America causing them to enter the war?

Who is? Did Abe say that? in what kind of context? I haven't seen nor heard it. or Is it just AFP who added.

Other Trump comments, suggesting that Japan might want to consider developing nuclear weapons to combat threats from North Korea, also drew criticism.

Why not Japan just follow his suggestion. Good idea.

@sensei

It's not like we forgot

This was written by an international news agency. And you would be surprised how ignorant younger generations are of history. I would wager half of all Western people under 30 have no idea Japan ever had nuclear bombs dropped on it.

Moonraker…. "squandered the optimism of 1989" exactly!!!!

The Agence France Presse is playing victim? Best read carefully, Abe did not say that.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

He also called for Tokyo to pay more to support the two countries’ security alliance.

Trump should understand Japan already pays a lot for US army. Moreover, the base is not only for Japan but also for whole Asian region.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

"Mr Abe! Mr. Abe! Now that Trump has been elected president and has vowed to not ratify the TPP what are your plans?"

Mr Abe? Mr Abe? (No response)

"Ladies and gentlemen, it appears that Mr. Abe has had to leave the room. He has egg all over his face!"

"prepare to be shaken and stirred Mr Abe"

The US Senate has already called on the State Department to introduce sanctions against Japan for their STATE-SPONSORED CHILD KIDNAPPING.

All it needed was someone to push the button...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ambassador Kennedy will also need to start packing her bags fairly soon.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

prepare to be shaken and stirred Mr Abe.... the name is Trump, Donald Trump...

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Midgets on the world stage, just like the succession of them that have squandered the optimism of 1989.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

“Japan... basic human rights and [the] rule of law.”

Just as well the Americans are not good at spotting irony...

5 ( +10 / -5 )

What a joke Abe! Total back peddling here. Your meetings with Hillary were useless.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Japan—the only country to suffer atomic bomb attacks—

Still playing the victim. Why not say Japan-the only country to attack America causing them to enter the war?

You could have just said

"Trump comments, suggesting that Japan might want to consider developing nuclear weapons to combat threats from North Korea, also drew criticism."

It's not like we forgot
