Go to Pyong Yang and have direct talks with Kim Jung Un.

Offer economic and food aid to jump start a new era of peaceful and fruitful relationship.

Don't continue to be a mere echo of another country.

History indicates that no country has ever been coerced into giving up nuclear weapons or weapons program. But several countries like Libya, Iraq, South Africa, Argentina and Brazil have been convinced to do so. In other words there are things that can be done without North Korea's cooperation or make it more difficult. Strengthening barriers to getting nuclear weapons, increasing penalties for violating global norms, and increasing the incentives for giving up weapons and capabilities are three things that can be done. Sanctions are a myth and won't work. The United Nations Security Council could pass a resolution declaring any nuclear test a threat to international peace and security and or make the move to make the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty a permanent organization. But it won't help because realistically they have no power to enforce it or maybe the better question is how are they going to enforce it.

It bears repeating. Japan has renounced war for 70 years. Can humanity support peace as a worthy goal? If it can't, then each nation has to accept autarky as the only future it will ever have.

Abe is putting the existential question before all humankind. Is idealism dead? If the answer is yes, then Japan needs to rearm and it needs to start with a few nukes. ASAP. Just to catch up.

How high is the probability that NK will have a nuclear weapon "accident" within their country or worse a "test" gone awry?

Obviously, the right way to stopping their aggression would be: a. Stop the sanctions induced humanitarian crisis. b. Stop amassing more and more military power worldwide, contribute to overall prosperity and integrity through understanding, not power. c. STOP TOUCHING THE 9TH ARTICLE.

As Yubaru's first comment pointed out, Abe didn't demand anything. The headline was written that misleading way to arouse ire in people who don't read the article. Standard journalism these days, sad to say.

I don't believe NK has ever set off a nuclear device. This latest 'nuclear test' was the latest in a run of falsehoods, IMO.

It was declared a nuclear test the day it occurred. Funny thing is, US and Japan sent up radiation 'sniffer' aircraft that can detect airborne radiation, and their results were due out nearly a week after the actual test. The results have not been widely publicized.

Has anyone seen anything about actual radiation in the air?

China and South Korean authorities both said they did not detect any abnormal levels of radiation above their countries.

So what exactly was detonated?

The UN Security council issue a unanimous ultimatum to Kim, open up the country to UN inspectors, free access, to all sites, shut down the weapons testing and manufacturing, plus everything covered in the sanctions, give him one week to respond, if he doesnt agree....

Doesn't matter take your pick, Mossad, Spetsnaz , Delta,...take his ass out. Try him in abstention for having the worst hair cut on record, sentence him and carry it out in a timely manner, drones might work too. Just dont announce it publicly, he'd go into hiding.

Do what it takes, get rid of him! and continue to get rid of NK leaders that keep on with the same policies. THAT'll get the message across.

THe people of NK deserve at least that much.

Two points -

1) I find it ironic that Japan chooses not be a signatory to the abolish nuclear weapons campaign. A total Ban, nonetheless. Instead it chooses to play both cards. We as the only sufferers of nuclear weapons and We under the protection of US nuclear weapons and their "deterrent effect.

2) I find nothing wrong at all with a nation (Japan) showing it's non-offensive peace colours and intentions. With centuries of history supporting the warrists, a new challenge , a new direction for peace is an admirable cause. To the nay-sayers I say, it has to start somewhere. Be seen as a leading nation defying the trend, against all odds hold on to pacifism. Get "lesser" nations support to start and build a considerable network over the decades, becoming a force too loud to ignore. Dreaming??? Well the other option has NEVER worked - NEVER. The courage and conviction required to follow the non-offensive path is immense. Japan is in the position to engage the world with this - but I cynically believe the govt is so interwoven into the fabric of the military - industrial complex, that it cannot extricate itself or doesn't even want to. So we unfortunately have to witness "One face Good, Two faces Better"

I'm with bullfighter. I don't particularly like Abe, but the UN is somewhere they need to come to some sort of consensus. He might not have any ideas, but he is there stating the current plan isn't working and he is correct. It's not just Japan he is stating this for but the world in general. I'm sure you'll all be quick to point the finger at Abe for doing nothing when the **** hits the fan.... or laugh any ideas he might have off as being ridiculous. Ugh. What a horrible bunch of responses. I am disappointed. Even the article spells it out clearly. SInce WWII, Japan has been content to be the world's peace experiment. It accepted that, unconditionally, and proceeded to make a tiny nation with no natural resources into the number 2 GNP of the world. It has proved that peace works and that peace can lead the world to a better way.

But just look at the ooozing cynicism when Abe stands up and just says the truth. Even though Japan has rejected nuclear weapons and renounced war, if countries are willing to use any excuse imaginable to avoid protecting the "peace experiment," then why do the people living in Japan have to remain committed to standing defenseless against bullying thug states?

I think people in other countries have forgotten "the deal" and "the history" and forget the responsibilities of their ancestors for protecting the dream of a lasting peace. If Japan is starting to wonder about the resolve of all nations to make a stand for peace, I can hardly blame them.

Kim needs to go, one way or another. Imagine Cuba or Venezuela testing missiles in the direction of the US. Japan has put up with this for too long.

Demanding that "the world do something" means that no one will do anything. No one has done anything so far, and nothing will be done until North Korean bombs hit Seoul or Japan, or America.

The current permanent security council members have all shown they are not worthy of the place and the organisation will not be enhanced by having 4 more countries of pretty much the same ilk joining them. If we must have such a council then we need countries that are much more selfless with regard to peace, humanity and human development and the environment on it to show us the way. Maybe Scandinavians or Costa Rica or Bhutan, maybe even Canada ... I dunno ... but the records of all the countries are out there. The current bunch and the wannabes have pretty poor records on all scales and hardly represent the way humanity should go.
