Duterte is right to have closer military and economic ties with Japan.

again your facts are all over the place, that is the problem when the person you try to defend is very inconsistent with his words. Don't you understand what Duterte wants? Duterte doesn't want ALL foreign military influence in the Philippines. Building closer ties with Japanese military contradicts what he wants again.

USA have been the de facto ruler of their colony authorizing coup against Marcos and Estrada.

You are wrong, Marcos and Estrada was kicked out and got coup'ed by the Filipino people, I was present on both revolutions against these guys and We went there by our own will because we are tired of their administration, And America didn't ask us to go and revolt! Actually The US that time supported Marcos and it was him who allowed the US to build a base in the Philippines. And Duterte is a big fan of Marcos! Another proof that this person you support doesn't have any strong principles. GUCHA GUCHA!

If only Japan have colonized the PH instead of Amerika then one could now travel from Aparri to Jolo via highspeed trains instead of WW2 US navy leftovers.

Uhm the the coast guard boats and ships are all the fruit of Aquino Administration dude, not by Duterte. Again your facts are all over the place. Duterte is only on his 4th month and this week's visit was his first ever formal meeting with PM Abe. Aquino made these deal last year and finally it's been done and delivered. Do the math and do more research before you assume things.

It's not America nor Japan's responsibility to give Philippines anything, giving them these stuff can lead to corruption. Philippines need to sort out the corruption problem and buy our own military resources ourselves

Philippines is always be better off without being colonized by any countries including Japan! stop thes comparrisons as you are starting to sound like sour graping over Japan's defeat during WW2.

re: Good Luck President Duterte , help Philippines to rise again. Thank god for granting us a true leader who really cares about us, guide him and make him a person you wanted him to be. We need a leader like President Duterte"

And that comment courtesy of the Chinese propaganda machine..lol... Again, the US does not need the Philippine's and only serves right to pull out US companies out. Welcome to the new TIBET as they same was done to them. As for walls well the can be tumbled, so build away. The US people would rather have the companies come back home with OUR jobs and support our own economy. Let the new TIBET continue its path. They will learn their lessons quick while they serve their new Emperor of China. Abe will follow suit.

OssanAmerica, Duterte accused the US for thinking of the Philippines as "a dog barking for the crumbs of their favor." "I want, maybe, in the next 2 years, my country, freed of the presence of foreign military troops. I want them out, and if I have to revise or abrogate agreements, executive agreements, I will," he said. That is a lapdog being chained by foreign military forces in the country, just like Japan. How many foreign military bases that China has in Asia? None. So, hegemony is out of the question. “I want to be friends to China,” he told an audience of businesspeople in Tokyo. “I do not need the arms. I do not want missiles established in my country. I do not need to have the airports to host the bombers.” You see, China has friends but the US has allies, the distinction is obvious.

Hiro S Nobumasa, “See the difference?” Yes, I can see the difference, but what about the string that is attached to them? PH will get more gifts and concessions if it listens to the US and Japan. As mentioned in the article, “The leaders of Japan and the Philippines agreed Wednesday to cooperate in promoting regional peace and stability, and acknowledged the importance of their alliances with the U.S.,” the alliance is in real jeopardy and Abe was assigned the job to patch things up with Duterte in the unusual special meeting. It’s a messy political game and Duterte wants out.

jj1067, “President Duterte introduced himself to President Obama. President Obama replied saying "My men will talk to you".” It’s hard to believe that Obama would say that. This shows how the US is treating PH like dirt. Duterte would not be so against the US if he was not really hurt from the way he was treated. I guess the lapdog is biting back.

I've been always wondering why Duterte has been so disrespectful to the US.

Just found out today, in Japan the following episode reported on a news TV tonight. The news also says the following is widely reported too on the news in The Philippines.

@Hiro is right that US embassy in the Philippines had been acting like a Governor General and Duterte had hard time as the mayor of Dabaw for long time. So from the beginning of his presidency Duterte has been disrespectful to the US. Then, after US cancelled the US-Philippines summit meeting at ASEAN, Duterte sent "I'm sorry" message to the US. Then this happened.

When for the first time President Duterte met with President Obama on the backstage of ASEAN conference where the summit meeting was cancelled, President Duterte introduced himself to President Obama. President Obama replied saying "My men will talk to you".

That "My men will talk to you" made super hard line Durerte-attitude of today.

That's that and anyway I hope US and the Philippines will both reconsider the relationship and make it more productive.

Duterte is right to have closer military and economic ties with Japan.

USA have been the de facto ruler of their colony authorizing coup against Marcos and Estrada.

Their ambassador acts like a Governor General who can command the military with just a wink of an eye.

If only Japan have colonized the PH instead of Amerika then one could now travel from Aparri to Jolo via highspeed trains instead of WW2 US navy leftovers.

Fortunately Duterte is wise enought to know that he can trust PM Abe and Japan much more than the Amerikano masters who provided Manila with 50 year old coast guard cutters unlike Tokyo which gave new and modern corvettes and frigates with cutting edge technology.

See the difference?

Pukey2Oct. 27, 2016 - 10:05AM JST “I want to be friends to China,” he told an audience of businesspeople in Tokyo I bet Abe must be seething in private. Good on Duerte for not being a lapdog or the lapdog of a lapdog.

What do you think being "friends to China" means if not being a lapdog? Might even end up as the main course.

the loaning well from usa is dry, so fack u usa says dutertee. so now he begs for moneys from japan. such a wise guy. such honesty. such ethics. abe is so intelligent in making business this one-way business deal with dutertee.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Abe is showing Japan welcome Fillipin or any Asian countries. Because of Abe, they ,including Fillipin they don't hate Japan anymore.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I like Filipino people, and hope their best, but it's not good to talk so bad about America. As far as I know, the USA has only always wanted to be good partners with PI.

What Duterte said about Americans being rude and bullies is true. Look at the extrajudicially squatted land in Okinawa and it explains all.

Abe is right to strengthen ties to a new PH whose leader is against graft and corruption.

Japan should provide high speed train technology to hasten the economic development of the whole archipelago .

Tokyo can do in 3 years what Washington failed to do in their 100 years of colonizing.

So your solution to that is to be under another rude bully who is 10 times worse than the previous one? that solution is rubbish, I don't know why you keep on insisting and pushing about trains! it's not a responsibility by other countries to build trains in the Philippines, that is a responsibility of the PHIL. GOVERNMENT! plus what are you talking about colonizing? Philippines is not being colonized by america, every single filipinos know that. Our problem is our corrupt government and not the americans.

Duterte looks like a cro magnon and acts like one too!

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

kurisupisuOCT. 27, 2016 - 12:33PM JST So Abe might have been played by Duterte?

Japan has little choice. From Japan’s viewpoint, there’s good reason to strengthen security cooperation with Vietnam and the Philippines. Vietnam has the region’s second longest coastline and is an ideal choice for maritime security cooperation. The Philippines occupies one of the world’s most important and busiest sea lanes of communication with its widespread maritime territories. Majority of the crude oil and energy supplied to Japan go through this sea lane. That is the lifeline for Japan.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

So Abe might have been played by Duterte?

If Abe were more of a statesman and not so desperate, he might not need the support of a third world country.....

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This guy sure knows how to milk those around him for all they're worth. He's gotta feel like a superstar. Abe has not committed to giving Duterte heaps of equipment and weaepons, and for what in return? A 'promise' that he'll work with Japan on Maritime concerns? The MINUTE he gets back to the Philippines he'll be figuring out how to spend the "loans" on his home island so that he and his cronies profit, and he'll be in deals with China before the first week of November ends -- guaranteed. Japan is just pulling down its pants and grabbing it's ankles and hoping for the best.

Hiro S Nobumasa Japan should provide high speed train technology to hasten the economic development of the whole archipelago . Tokyo can do in 3 years what Washington failed to do in their 100 years of colonizing.

Japan will give high speed train tech for free ? Japan is leaving on past glory, where is the money, it can't outmuscle China in courting Duterte and you are talking of the U.S The $210 million dollar he has been promised by Abe looks like pocket compared with what he got from China.

Matt Hartwell Go the Israel option.

The Israeli option is which ?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

For the longest time USA has neglected the strategic importance of philippines, and is now in danger of losing it economically and militarily to China.

Subic base and Clark airbase might as well be China's PLAN and PLAAF respectively if USA and Japan continues to ignore, if not downplay the importance of Philippines in the region.

USA and Japan cannot afford to lose the one of the "First Island Chain" that is the Philippines.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IslandChainStrategy

Beijing just offered sweet aid deals to Philippines worth $13 billion.

Washington and Tokyo now have to match or exceed the above offer so that the Philippines does not completely turn to China.

Seriously the US does not need the Philippine's to deal with China or its aggression moves

The PI is pretty key to containment. if you take a map of Asia and color every country allied with China red and every country allied with the US Blue, you would see virtually a wall closing China in. This is what makes the Japanese Islands from Hokaido to the Ryukyus, Indonesian, Malayasian, and The Philippines so key. The US cannot afford to lose one link in this chain.

This guy is a first class used car salesman.

Hahaha, yup! His impulsive comments make it obvious he isn't playing any sort of strategy. He just says whatever he thinks at the moment much to the dismay of his advisors.

How is anyone going to contain a country the size of China with the population China and money that China has? Its particularly hopeless because everybody is addicted to Chinese labour and supply chain economics. You would need the capability to tell all Western and Japanese companies to withdraw production from China, completely. Despite everything, does that show any sign, at all, of happening? Very, very little. When the U.S president gets serious about this, then you might have an effective containment strategy, until then, there are two options.

1) Nuclear deterrence, preferably something difficult to attack and target, like subs, or...

2) Conventional deterrence in the form of conventional submarines, missile defense, distributed power systems (rather than centralised ones, like coal), bunker systems and a standing army that is in fact made up of every able bodied person, men and women, in your civilian population. You need compulsory military service.

Forget about extremely shaky alliances that are the subject of some politicians whim in the Philippines or anywhere else. Stand alone and stand strong. Go the Israel option.

“I want to be friends to China,” he told an audience of businesspeople in Tokyo. “I do not need the arms. I do not want missiles established in my country. I do not need to have the airports to host the bombers.”

If only Abe thought this way too!

Kind of 'surprise' to see this statement got down votes.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

hypocrite! doesn't want to host airports for bombers, but slaughtered 3,000 "ALLEGED" small time drug dealers and USERS.

“We will survive, without the assistance of America, maybe a lesser quality of life, but as I said, we will survive.”

This is his own personal opinion and not by the majority of filipinos! His pride cannot feed millions of hungry filipinos! plus this again contradicts what his cabinet members say that what he meant was not really to break ties with US at all. VERY VERY INCONSISTENT ADMINISTRATION. USA! Please Embargo Philippines asap! Majority of the Filipinos want and need america. If he continues to push for this I think it's gonna cause a big problem and backlash within Philippines.

He just mentioned that he doesn't want any military assistance from any foreign countries, but why would he still sign the agreement with Japan to get coast guard patrol boats, ships and T-90 aircraft ? Japan would better give these to vietnam instead. If Duterte really stand by his decision, he should return these ships and aircraft and make our Military self sufficient defending our country with Arnis sticks, sumpak, amulet and Jetskis with Philippine flag.

And his useless Sec of Foreign Affairs Perfecto Yasay who was just there to fill role like a plastic made flower. Can't make any decision by himself and will do whatever Duterte will ask him to do. PLEASE explain to us what is your plan if USA Embargo Philippines? It's akways easy to say "WE CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT THEM" but HOW!? that is what filipinos need to know, because until now Duterte has still no solution to end poverty?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

dumb and dumber

Human rights-violating pariahs really do stir this mug Abe's loins.

Being friends with a bully is a sure way of making sure that you keep your lunch money. :)

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Time for the USA to cut the snakes head off and end all economic and Military and diplomatic ties with teh PI. They love China let china have em. Also the USA needs to deport every sing Filipino from the USA to PI and China. Cut all call centers and all other forms of monetary gain for the PI and its people once and for all.

“I want to be friends to China,” he told an audience of businesspeople in Tokyo. “I do not need the arms. I do not want missiles established in my country. I do not need to have the airports to host the bombers.”

focused largely on Japan’s contribution to Philippine maritime security and other projects totaling a 21 billion yen ($210 million) loan.

Hmmmmm. I hope this loan will be paid back btw, Abe is very eager to hand out loans yet not improve anything inside Japan.

Re: Duterete, in his second round of talks only among close aides, reassured Abe that he has no intention to severe diplomatic ties with the U.S."

Seriously the US does not need the Philippine's to deal with China or its aggression moves. The US should severe all ties with the Philippine's, and leave that peasant farm to the Chinese, they are hungry and as Duarte said himself, they will survive, less quality of life other than the super rich and his family. The others well peasants like cock roaches survive. The US should give them what he wants. Pull out completely including any US assets, companies that have provide jobs like DOLE, Del Monte, get out of Philippine's, LEVI"s, all these US companies need to get out too and go home to the US put US people back to work. Maybe Trump had the right idea after all.
