Abe again hints at Japan's possible military role in Taiwan contingency

Who is he again? Current Prime Minister? Current Minister of Defense? Current Minister of Foreign Affairs?

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Kishida really need to tell him to shut up. He is undermining the new government with all his stunts and isn't doing anyone any favor.

-2 ( +11 / -13 )

Someone needs to remind this Idiot that he isn't the PM anymore. Or is he the Shadow Shogun of Japan?

-8 ( +9 / -17 )

Kishida takes direction from Abe. No way that Kishida can censore Abe.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

It seems Abe is desperately trying to inflame tension.

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

Just remember that the moment Japan allows the US to launch military operation from Okinawa, Japan becomes an official combatant in Taiwan War, and it becomes legal for China to rain Tokyo with thousands of ballistic missiles.

A fact Abe will not tell Japanese public while selling his idea of a Japanese military intervention, and this is why incumbent Japanese Prime Ministers refuse to let Japan be involved.

Thousands of ballistic missiles? Raining over Tokyo? Another "simplistic" scenario of what would most likely be met with a retaliation in kind by the U.S., if not one escalated to strategic nuclear level.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Last time Abe did this, at a press conference the next day it was announced that Abe was not a member of the government and did not speak for it. Same should happen this time.

However Abe's brother Kishi is minister of defence and is creating new trouble tension all the time. Kishida has to get rid of him.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

@Tom San

if not one escalated to strategic nuclear level.

Biden will announce "no first use" US nuclear policy use next year. This is a done deal and Biden is notifying allies to their outrage.

As long as China doesn't use nukes against the US and its allies under US nuclear ambarella, the US will not use nukes against China.

So there is nothing the US can do other than to fire a few hundred cruise missiles available in the region, if those could be spared in defense of Japan.

So it is a bad idea for Japan to tick off China and Korea each armed with thousands of ballistic missiles, Japan can't win a missile shoot out war.

Allies lobby Biden to prevent shift to 'no first use' of nuclear arms

Behind-the-scenes pressure intensifies amid fears U.S. will change doctrine

US allies are lobbying Joe Biden not to change American policy on the use of nuclear weapons amid concern the president is considering a "no first use" declaration that could undermine long-established deterrence strategies aimed at Russia and China.

Japan is standing with Taiwan!

The message was clear from several politicians not just former PM Abe.

A Taiwan emergency is a Japan emergency.

China already responded with fire and fury on Japan's position. Might not be enough for you, but China got the message.

Winter Olympics? Japan is the same side with USA and will boycott.

S. Korea??? Can't even do this gesture of boycott with USA and Japan, can't join Quad Alliace either or make statements of support for Taiwan.

1 ( +14 / -13 )

Samit Basu

Let's have Moon or other former ex Korean presidents make similar statements of support for Taiwan.

I don't hear anything from S.Korea, and I definitely don't hear a Taiwan emergency being a South Korean emergency. Your using the same water lanes as Japan, Taiwan also a democracy. Let's hear some support!!

South Korea not part of Quad Alliace to balance China. Won't join.

South Korea won't even Join to Boycott the China Winter Olympics!! Even that is too much for S.Korea!!

"Abe elaborated on his earlier remarks on a TV program aired Monday, saying, "In the event of an attack on a U.S. vessel, it could be a situation posing a threat to Japan's survival, which would allow the exercise of collective self-defense."

Bay of Tonkin anyone?

This is nothing but a simplistic, if not naive outlook on the capabilities of the US Armed Forces as well as those of the JSDF. Please go back to playing Call of Duty.

Pointing out that Yonaguni Island -- Japan's westernmost territory -- is only 110 kilometers away from Taiwan, he said, "If something happens here, it will definitely become a crucial situation"

Amazing what you learn when you google a place you don't know, for instance on wiki it states,

As the westernmost inhabited island of Japan, Yonaguni has also been constantly associated with the myth of the island of women (Nyōgo no Shima) since the Edo period.

Also, the island has a battleship already....unfortunately it's a rock formation,

Gunkan-iwa is a rock formation near the shore that looks like a battleship

Abe the grandson of war criminal Kishi Nobusuke who was responsible for the deaths of millions of Chinese used for slave labor making a big show of standing up for democracy, the same Abe who colluded with his friend in the Abe mask debacle to steal millions from tax payers and endless other tidy arrangements, this guy is a non stop barrel of laughs.

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

With such a condition met, Japan's Self-Defense Forces would be allowed to extend logistical support to the U.S. military.

There is a huge difference from "logistical support", to "fighting side by side". The former is worth a little, the latter is worth a lot.

China can chill out in the knowledge that Japan will not join the fighting and will only carry the bullets instead.

Well said!!

Is Abe so naive to think a war in Taiwan is good for Japan? So he eagerly want to involve for Japan with some possible military role ? No! War is terrible, everything you desire would be gone if it does happen.

US military experts say a war over Taiwan is desirable, because Asia’s growth to become world’s economic heartland has become unstoppable.

Abe san, don't play that kind of game with western rightwing extremists to ruin your loved Japan!

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

@sakuraauki.

he is none of what you asked. Can he say what he thinks? Absolutely!

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Abe is correct. Any Chinese invasion of Taiwan which will certainly involve fighting American troops will be a green signal for Japan to use its military to support democratic forces.

On the other hand I don’t think Xi is foolish enough to attack Taiwan and repeat a Nanjing type of massacre where 26 million innocent civilians , women and children are killed.

Abe is a menace. Kicked twice to the curb - he arises again. His departure on the cusp of a scandal - masked as due to health reasons - same day two of his cronies were indicted.

As for his military prowess, he doesn't have any. His fevered and fabulist dreams of Japan as an empire emanates from a fossilized mind - right-wing, totalitarian and reactionary. His economic policies were disastrous. He is backward culturally and socially.

Why the LDP would find it necessary to allow him to mouth off, simply fits the drama of a regime that has absolutely no vision of a viable future except to be mired in the past 75 years - the end all being a country in the doldrums economically and wedded to the aims of the USA and a minority faction of old men who haven't had an original thought in the entirety of their lives. Old men who speak of war, completely neglecting the reality of such an event. Dangerous old men who need to be put to pasture.

Rubbish. No US military expert has said that. Perhaps Chinese one's have.

Every time somebody writes against China, all their puppets come out and dance here. Same thing happening today. China may be mighty but not indefetable. If we dont restrain them with Taiwan today, they will surely expand to Okinawa and the Phillpppines and Malaysia, so on next decade.

Take the Chna threat seriously, dont criticise each other and pull legs of the those on same side.

China is a BULL, dirty BULL, that needs to be restrained..... lets not forget that...

Abe the grandson of war criminal Kishi Nobusuke who was responsible for the deaths of millions of Chinese used for slave labor making a big show of standing up for democracy,

Factcheck: Kishi Nobusuke was detained and questioned by GHQ. He was never charged, tried or convicted as a "War Criminal" and released.

Quote:South Korea's president on Monday ruled out joining a US diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, citing the need to work with China.

That's what Moon said! S.Korea already made its decision!!

just like they decided not to join Quad Alliace or NOT to make statements of support and defense of Taiwan. Your Korea is buddy buddy with China and getting closer!

Not false, but deserving more "facts" to grasp the situation and decisions taken by the US victor around Kishi as well as have some more details about Kishi himself to better evaluate the man.

No, false period. You can not label any person not convicted of a crime a "criminal". Common sense.
