IOC awarded Olympic to Tokyo, not to Japan. So Koike, as Tokyo Governor has upper hand. Abe knows that.

Smith explained sample mentality of other key LDP stuffs. As Olympics produce tremendous amount of income, Abe needed to ensure Koike is not going to exclude his gov

"The LDP had refused to back her in the election for failing to seek its approval before announcing her candidacy, with a top party official calling her “selfish”"

That's a rather mild way of describing the comments against her. Here is what Shintaro Ishihara had to say:

"We cannot leave Tokyo to a woman with too much make-up."

His own son (the second son) had to call her to apologise because he said his father never will. Glad Koike could stick it to all these men, and hope she continues to still.

“The government will cooperate with Tokyo,” he said in remarks aired on television. What he meant to say was Tokyo will cooperate with the government.

Doesn't the article in this link:

contradict this very article?

And other sources also point out that Abe's appointment of Ms. Marukawa to the post of Olympics minister as a jab against Ms. Koike. I'm really quite confused about this.

she and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe put aside political differences for the good of the Games

What political differences do they have exactly? They are both Nippon Kaigi fact-deniers dedicated to bringing back the good old days of the government telling people what to do.

Abe told Koike she had “won a point” over the party with her resounding victory.

“The government will cooperate with Tokyo,” he said in remarks aired on television.

The government has no choice, passive-aggressive utterances or not.

You are suppose to be working for the people not yourselves

Patriotism. That's what's it's all about. Working for the people.

Whereas nationalism is working for the state.

There is overlap. And there is difference.

When the two contradict, I favor the people.

LDP candidate was former Iwate Governor who believe decentralize profitable prefecture income and other prefectures will be same. His ideology Tokyoites rejected. Think half of Ginza move to a farm village. In Iwate and Ginza will e combination of farms from Iwate and half glittering night thoroughfares.
