Newly-elected Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Shinzo Abe on Thursday appointed former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba as secretary-general.

Abe finished second to Ishiba in the first round of voting on Wednesday, which included three other candidates, but beat him 108-89 in the head-to-head runoff.

Abe told a news conference that Ishiba has wide support across the country and that he wanted to use his experience. Abe said that he hopes to finalize his executive lineup by Friday, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Abe said he wants to put a team in place to lead the LDP back to power in the lower house election expected in November.
