Abe says he will release new statement on World War II

Pray tell -- WHY????? Get on with your lives Japan. IMO only folks who hope their guilt and shame can somehow be erased by the passing of time keep memories like this alive. They refuse to accept history's verdict about what they did, so they hope to change it.

10 ( +15 / -5 )

This will not end well. Any "new" statement on the war will only be revisionist BS.

How pathetic that the right wing loonies like Abe still haven't come to grips with their own history and guilt.

14 ( +19 / -6 )

If the government's official position is that Japan should be "forward-thinking" and that countries like China and the Koreas are needlessly bringing up the past for political gain, then you'd think there would be no reason for any new statements on World War II. If you honestly feel no additional apologies are necessary, silence is probably best.

But noooo.... Mr. Abe's going to have his final say on the matter, political and economic consequences be damned.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

In a possible hint the statement may come in 2015

WTF?!? He won't even be PM then. So it seems he's too much of a coward to release his statement while in office and thus take responsibility for it.

Which is kind of apt, when you consider the Japanese attitude toward taking responsibility on this matter.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

The best way to be "future-orientated" would be to leave the topic well alone rather than try to get all Michael j Fox about it. What a complete _____.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I think brutality by the Imperial Army is more or less true in the W.W. II. See the recent judo coach Sonoda's abuse scandal, our nature has not changed very much and reveals once in a while.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

So, let me get this right. Abe wants to increase sales tax to 10%, create an inflated economy, cut welfare and pension payments, increase pension installments, change the constitution, boost Japan's military power and spending and now, he wants to change history too? This is getting beyond a joke! And, the people voted for him? Why didn't they just give everyone a gun and let them shoot themselves in the foot?

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Things are quickly moving towards the pre-WW1 situation. Some could argue we are already there. Japan is sorry that it had to come to that. They are sorry that they couldn't do more to pre-empt the conditions that lead to war. Abe will certainly focus on this, and on the context of Western interests/ideologies perpetually and increasingly encroaching on the liberties of others. In effect, a warning will be issued: "never again".

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

He should just capitalize the entire previous statement since there are so many people who are convinced that "Japan has never apologized". And that's what they're going to say even if he issues a bigger apology anyway.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Good move and hopefully it contains proper context considered all things in proper perspective. All past history and wars across the globe contain the good, the bad, and the ugly. Japan has contributed much to the world since WWII and must moving forward to play a major role in shaping the future of the world. Indeed, the exploiters of history have the right to complain, however; actions speak louder than words. All the best to Japan. Cheers.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

He needs to be very, very careful about this. If it is a reaffirmation of past statements, thats fine.

If he is engaging in revisionism, people are going to go nuts.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

And that's what they're going to say even if he issues a bigger apology anyway.

No chance in hell that will ever happen.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

This sounds EXACTLY like those attention hungry out of favor media starlets and internet forum regulars who try to drum up interest in their pathetic lives by hinting at some kind of future "controversy".

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I guess, it is not Asia that keeps the WW2 talks alive but the own Japan. If they don't release any new astonishing statements, no one will even remember it.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

I agree with Gaijifo. Let it go. This is not the way for Japan to move on. Let the past stay in the past and look to the future.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Foot, meet mouth.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

"“I would like to announce a future-orientated statement that will suit the 21st century,”"

In other words, "I'm going to change the past". You cannot issue a NEW statement on what's already happened (and keep in mind he is protecting grandpappy and he himself was far from born yet). At the same time this man is BEGGING China to normalize relations in terms of economic trade because he knows how bad Japan is hurting from it. Once a loser, always a loser.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Here I go misjudging Abe again, I thought he would rush to get this one out and not wait until 2015....you know he has a bad tummy and everything.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Who does he think he is? He's not head of state, he's not the Emperor or some kind of president. He's just the leader of the majority party in parliament. He's got no right to "revise" anything. China and Korea should ignore whatever he says and ask to hear direct from the Emperor. Organ grinder, not monkey.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

In a possible hint the statement may come in 2015

Come on - hands up anyone who expects Abe to still be in the job in 2015.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

What does JP know about the 21st Century??

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

LOL.. I for one, is enjoying this show from Japan.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Japanese must correct the history wichi was made liar and don't know their real history. We have to tell the true. We know they just want money and to stand over Japan. Just for it, they keep lying. Rotten people. Japan apologies evry year a lot of times. We gave money and technology. But they never forgive us. We must stop it. Look at all over the world. You know what they are doing even now in japan and the world. They can't change thier essential for ever. Don't ignore this problem.

We must allege the truth.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

spudmanreincarnatedFeb. 02, 2013 - 09:02AM JST And that's what they're going to say even if he issues a bigger apology anyway. No chance in hell that will ever happen.

I didn't know you read his draft already,

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

TamaramaFeb. 02, 2013 - 09:02AM JST He needs to be very, very careful about this. If it is a reaffirmation of past statements, thats fine. If he is engaging in revisionism, people are going to go nuts.

No he doesn't. It doesn't matter what he says, it's going to be "insincere".

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

This would be hilarious if it wasnt so pathetic!

First there is NO WAY abe can pull this off, if he spouts off some of HIS views Asia & The Far East will be thoroughly pissed off!!

Second even if he tells the truth( or somewhat trueful) we all know HE'S NOT BELEIEVING WHAT'S SAID

So this whole idea is simply IMPOSSIBLE for abe to do no matter which way he goes.

But then I went back & say the 2015 bit, what a putz abe, you will hopefully BE history by then!

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Enough apologizing.. it never stops. Japanese do not have to apologize when in Hawaii while they are shopping and eating at sushi restaurants. I think America should apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki...which was a war crime in some people's opinion... and Japan should apologize to itself.. for having ignored in a big way the Habakusa who leave a legacy of bravery, dignity and peace.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

In a possible hint the statement may come in 2015,

The chances of Abe still being PM in 2015 are slim to none.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Haha awesome post their Smash!

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Patrick SmashFeb. 02, 2013 - 11:53AM JST

I have something really important to write on this, but I'm afraid you'll all have to wait until 2015 for me to post it. Why does it take Mr. Abe 2 years to write a statement? Is this the electrifying new leader in action? The sooner Mr. Abe gets stomach trouble again, the better. If he is still in power in 2015, Japan will be on its way out.

Indeed. The sclerotic pace of politics, be it regression or reform, is a hallmark of modern Japan.

Back to the war though, Abe has a few choices. He can 'update' and water down previous statements and apologies to placate the right wing at home and raise the stakes abroad; he could take previous statements a step further and acknowledge and apologize for specific atrocities. That would please the neighbors and the world but upset the fascists at home. It would also possibly pull the rug out from Asian claims Japan is never repentant.

Or he can play the safe route: issue the same kind of vague grudging 'regret', shrug and say bad things happen in war -as all his predecessors have always done - then hotfoot it back to Yasukuni shrine to reassure the nationalists he didn't mean it. Just like they always do.

I think I know which he'll 'choose'.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Apology, no apology or whatever statement revision is really not that important for others in my opinion. Actually it's only important for Japanese future development and others' feeling about Japanese. I mean that suppose JP have better relationship with CN, SK and other Asia countries, it's sure be good for Japaneseselves. I know that in many old Japanese mind still feeling they were also deeply sufffering due to the US bombing/ city fire and A-bombs caused terrible casualities. Although they know they caused others' suffering but they think they already paid/suffered for what he's done. Actually history can never be clear! however a sincere apology only come from mouth of brave men. People will always respect really brave men! Still, it's japanese choice! There's another example like Chinese communist party, they ever did some guilty things but they don't want to apology, they did save their face but caused whole kind Chinese people bear outside criticize for them!

Damon Uso: "We have to tell the true."

A good start would be to stop lying and/or covering up the truth, like Abe is doing. Remember when Abe said sexual slavery did not exist and then was forced to rescind his lie and admit the truth? It's pretty obvious the guy is a liar and white-washer when it comes to history.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And no, Abe won't still be in office by 2015 -- the tummy aches will start again within the next few months, a minister will commit suicide due to scandal, Abe will be caught in various lies and gaffes, and then once again be 'forced to resign due to illnes'. The sooner the better, for Japan's sake.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Good move and hopefully it contains proper context considered all things in proper perspective. All past history and wars across the globe contain the good, the bad, and the ugly. Japan has contributed much to the world since WWII and must moving forward to play a major role in shaping the future of the world.

Bgood41 -- obviously you buy into Abe's "logic". That because Japan has prospered economically since the end of the war it has a right to put a new spin on is atrocities leading up to and during the war. That's pure unadulturated crap. Did the millions who suffered at Japan's hands suffer less because Japan became Japan Inc? No economic success gives Japan, or any other country, the right to put things in "proper context" as you phrase it.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Well, what do you expect ladies and gentlemen? Looks like Japan is going to have to learn things the hard way (again). As the saying goes, those that do not learn from history,...

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Wonder when Japan will ever stop their backward-looking national politics. Anyone?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

We have to tell the true.

ha ha ha.. like how Japan is covering up Fukushima disaster? Like sheep, Japanese just accept their government's explanation. Any other country, there would be warnings of dangers, street protests and riots against the lying government, followed by resignations and jail times. But in Japan, lies are truths. Lying and covering up and denying are genetically imprinted in the Japanese society. All in the name of face and over pride in themselves.

I notice the German president apolgogized again yesterday, which is like the thousandth time Germany and every president in Germany have done. And Germany says they still need to apologize when really, they didn't have to. It's not the apologies (although words do mean a lot). It's the persistence and determination to learn from the past and never to make the same mistakes, that Germany has always shown, makes them stand out from the morally rotted Japan.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Sad to say that some of my Japanese acquaintances and friends actually applaud Abe for 'being strong' and 'standing up for Japan'. The same curious descriptions are often used for the erotica novelist Ishihara. The pathetic revisionist rantings of a semi-literate soldier enjoyed popularity among many and he was praised for his love of country. After decades of jellyfish running the country ( there are some notable exceptions ) some have unfortunately equated the denial of atrocities with strength, and the acceptance of unpleasant historical facts as self-hatred.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It's sad when you think one apology will erase an entire part of history. Yet, the Japanese are this way and it is frustrating for their neighbours to see them so easily moving on. The war was not that long ago, and the memories of it are still alive in Asia. Japan purposely taught genrations after the war that they were the victims of a terrible duping by their own Emperor and military in an effort to keep their sphere of influence in Asia. Victims of the A-bomb. Victims of losing the war. It is really sad that post war generations don't know the truth of the war and the horrors they caused to it's neighbours, Okinawans, and own people. Man-up and join reality Japan.

I'm not saying apologise at every turn, but teach the truth. Accept the truth. The truth shall set you free... unless China and Korea spin it for their own political gains (which they will anyway).

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It's sad? No I don't think it's sad at all. I think this is so funny. It's great that Abe's government leads Japan. It will just make Japan the world's laughing stock, and really show Japan's true self rather than the image of Japan that the Japanese would like the world to see. I think this is just great.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

He better be careful. It only takes China to declare a imediate boycott to all things Made in Japan to crash Japanese economy in less than 24 hours.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Two things,

Why is there a need to issue a statement if there were ones made by previous administrations? Especially if they came close to an apology? Do successive governments have to keep doing this?

Why would it be made in 2015? Is it important to be on the 70th anniversary of the end of the war? Like others said, he probably won't be in office then knowing the rate of PMs being rotated through..
1 ( +2 / -1 )

So Mr.Abe not only wants to whitewash history, he also wants to repeat It.

I give him four more months, at best.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It is about time based on more evidence to face the real fact what really happened then. If many countries do not blame the past, Japan accepted everything during the International Military Tribunal for the Far East to reach SF peace treaty. Then Japan apologize to Korea and gave $5,300,000,000 asset and $800,000,000 cash to solve all the issues in 1965. Japan gave ODA to China 3,600,000,000,000 Yen till today but they keep demanding forever apology. After the price Japan paid not just money, if Japan can see only a good future with the world Abe would not have to do this. But the world never forgive Japan after 67 years of our determination for the world peace, Abe need to do this. The real history is not what it was being thought.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

chucky3176

What is your source of information about history.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Japan has done already. No more apology is necessary.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Ok where do we stop here? Should Germany apologise to Russia, Poland, France, for invading their countries? And slaughtering the Jewish people and causing mass murder, should the Argentineans apologise to the UK for invading the Falkland Islands and what about North Korea, they have all committed atrocities so should they not also apologise too??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

4649,

You BUY forgiveness, just saying!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I think America should apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki...which was a war crime in some people's opinion.

I am not Japanese but I think that nuclear bombings of civilians are unforgivable by definition.

...

-1 ( +4 / -4 )

Abe and his top cabinet officers should follow other Ex-prime ministers to visit China's Nanjing "Japan Invasion" Memorial Museum to show their new apology gesture. This might start to build a warm relationship with China. Then, Japan can donate money to build memorial museums to Korean and other Japan invasion victim countries. Then, Japan can negotiate with these countries to develop "Japan Towns" to send some old folks to retire in those foreign countries to save health care cost for their seniors. 40% of population in Japan are over age 60 now. Low birth rates and high population of seniors are killing Japanese economy and are signs of a dim future for Japan.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

jpn likes to euphemize everything that happened during ww2 ...

well, when this statement occurs coupled with the territorial dispute escalation, they'll get their incident alright....

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Chuck3176

" Like sheep, Japanese just accept their government's explanation. Any other country, there would be warnings of dangers, street protests and riots against the lying government, followed by resignations and jail times. "

did you mean China? or Russia? or Egypt? or etc....???

"It's not the apologies (although words do mean a lot). It's the persistence and determination to learn from the past and never to make the same mistakes, that Germany has always shown, makes them stand out from the morally rotted Japan."

Japan dominated and killed millions of Asians (directly and indirectly) during the war; however, these people descendants are pretty much moving on with the past. The left over 2 that always b****ng about the past are the C country and the K Country. Then, here's the question: Why others are able to move on but not these 2?

also "makes them stand out from the morally rotted Japan." WHILE "LOL.. I for one, is enjoying this show from Japan." alright, we got it, you don't have to show us how "morally rotted" you are.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

There is nothing more comical or sad than to see the Japanese Rightwing posters trying to defend this insanity. The reason why Europe has moved on from World War 2 is because Germany genuinely repented and educated its population of the atrocities that it committed in World War 2. The majority of the the Japanese population have no knowledge nor understanding of what transpired in World War 2, nor do they care. However, they sit and wonder why other Asian countries remain so angry and spiteful toward them. Well I'm sure Abe will settle things down! Pacifist country? Ha! Just a country of zombies that suffer from low self esteem and defer to authority (from the US to their own politicians). Everything China and Korea warned would happen is now happening. A country gets the politicians it deserves.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Oh wow...this was the step experts in and out of Japan was telling him NOT to take, including his mentor and senior member of the Cabinet, Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso and even Michael Green of CSIS. Of course, it will wholly depend on the content of the new statement, but I think he will need his new Japanese-version of NSC to make this executive decision (just kidding).

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I am not Japanese but I think that nuclear bombings of civilians are unforgivable by definition.

Both Hiroshima & Nagasaki were legit military targets

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I guess, it is not Asia that keeps the WW2 talks alive but the own Japan. If they don't release any new astonishing statements, no one will even remember it.

Wake up man and maybe read a newspaper once in awhile. You couldn't be further off the mark here.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

This is why Japan will never change and never be viewed as a respectable country. I would also be really angry, because they are playing around with their apologies and their history. The japanese politicians can do anything and there won't be any backlash from the public or government . You can tell by the procent of voters, which was really low, that japan wil not change. It seems like the right wingers are the only one's who voice and their number is growing. I bet that Japan only apologised to please other western nations. Im from Germany and we were taught really well about the history and how cruel it was. We had a mandatory history class for about 6 years and there, one of the major topics was the Nationalsozialismus. And we could never think of ppl or politicians to make any neutral comment about the war time or to whitewash it. It's strictly forbidden and the ppl would rage. Because we know that Germany was at fault. I think this is right, because you have to admit all the war crimes to fully repent to other countries and mean it! An unsincere apology is the same as no apology. Just educate your nation.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Some people seem not to have learned from previous experiences. Like two nuclear bombs are not enough lesson to be learned. Hello!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

hannasummer, that's why Germany has a bright future. Same thing can't be said of the other country who's now heading for another war because they think they want to recreate 1941 Rising Sun.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

stephen424, this is not Japanese history. The real history is that Japan helped kick out the white man imperialists from Asia and Asia prospered with Japan's great help. There, I fixed it for you. You should go back and relearn proper Japanese history.

Japan dominated and killed millions of Asians (directly and indirectly) during the war

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I am perplexed about History of War. It is not only the Japanese that committed atrocities, but, if you look at historical facts, almost every Country in the world have done the same thing. Why not just let history sleep and try not to commit new atrocities.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Canadianbento Learning from history is how we as humans evolve. The Japanese people refuse to come to terms with their own history and even distort it. Even a child knows that the knowledge of history helps prevent the mistakes of our past to be repeated again. It looks like the Japanese are going to have to learn the lessons of WW 2 all over again. Something the rest of Asia has been warning the rest of the world now since 1945. Gambatte Nihon

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Vienna1 Unfortunately, I think human being has never learnt from the past when it comes to war. I don't think it's only about Japan. But at least Japan has never used armed forces to settle international disputes for this 60 years and have really tried to keep peace with other countries. We just need to correct the 'false masochistic view of Japanese history'.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Shirokuma Aisu It is exactly this reason that Japan finds itself the most despised country in Asia. Let me ask you this...Why is that Germany is now not only a respected member of Europe but the defacto head of its federation, barely 65 years after World War 2? The country and its citizens owned up to its aggressive past and learned from its mistakes.

The same Japanese right wingers and historical deniers who decry the facts and significance of World War 2 are the same ones making paper cranes and playing the victim card every August on the anniversary dates of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The truth is Japan (ie. its citizens) is not sophisticated enough to address its past and will have to be taught another lesson by the same countries it abused so terribly in World War 2.

The Japanese population on the whole are too docile and vapid to care one way or the other and are not only completely oblivious of their own modern history, but of the current internation situation Japan finds itself in. This of course leaves the only ones who care, The Rightwingers, to take the reigns..

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Shirokuma Aisu It is exactly this reason that Japan finds itself the most despised country in Asia.

"Japan replaced Germany as the mist popular country.".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-18038304 Ouch!!

Let's just get this straight,AGAIN.

The only countries that continuously harpes on Japan to come "clean" with the past are Korea and China. Having said that, who are friends with these two nations?

I rest my case.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

The truth is Japan (ie. its citizens) is not sophisticated enough to address its past and will have to be taught another >lesson by the same countries it abused so terribly in World War 2.

Vienna, I don't know where you are from, but don't get so upset. I understood your position. We don't want this situation. We have to apologize for what had been done in the past. (Actually We did though it doesn't seem to have been accepted). Now we just want to re-evaluate our own history after 60 years because some of those historical "facts" are incorrect and includes false propaganda :)

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Having said that, who are friends with these two nations?

An excellent question nigelboy.

Maybe Pakistan ... or Zimbabwe .... beyond that I got nothing.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Why not just let history sleep and try not to commit new atrocities.

CndBento,

Beacause you cant learn from what you dont know much about & the average Japanese just doesnt know much about the brutal savagery Japan reigned killing between 20-30 million people, just do the math on the lower figure over 15yrs, pretty scary stuff & that doesnt include those that survived Japans rath.

Mean most Japanese know they caused suffering & damage to Asia & the far east................doesnt really jive with what happened, but boy oh boy the Japanese sure know about Hiroshima & Nagasaki, which is fine, but in the end this watering down & outright white washing is NOT helped Japan, quite the opposite & here we are

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Hey hidingout,

And which countries can Japan count as a friend, say the equivalnet of say US & Canada......................

Not just an aquaintence, think about it. While most countries dont have ill feeling about Japan, unless the topic is sushi or geisha Japan just doesnt come up much, just saying

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Normally the victor entitle himself the right to write history of the war, but in case of Japan it is the vanquished who has the right.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Major Japanese newspaper chastises the New York Times piece on the comfort women. Sankei newspaper says the comfort women are lies, it never happened. The editorial makes it sound as if Japan was the victim of victorious US/allied military. The paper rallies around the cry of we can no longer slander our ancestors. (their words, not mine)

http://sankei.jp.msn.com/politics/news/130202/plc13020203050002-n1.htm

Abe also wants to nullify and reject the article 11 of 1946 Treaty of Peace With Japan in San Fransisco, signed by Japan and 46 other nations because the Japanese say the guilty result was due to the court being made up by nations who were victorious. In the article 11, Japan accepted the guilt of making war handed by the tribunal. If Japan rejects the article 11, then what they're essentially saying is that they reject that Japan was an aggressor in the second world war - which has been the viewpoint of Shinzo Abe and his party all along.

I really hope he goes through with this, and show the world once and for all, what kind of a laughing stock Japan (an ally of Hitler Nazi Germany) will be, once they start changing the entire WWII history. According to Japanese history, Nanjing didn't happen, there were no Comfort women, Japan wasn't an aggressor, there were no Unit 731 - they are all lies and lies and more lies made up by lying Josenjins and Chinese. LOL.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Both Hiroshima & Nagasaki were legit military targets.

You should tell it to face of any japanese man. I would like to see consequences.

Some people seem not to have learned from previous experiences. Like two nuclear bombs are not enough lesson to be learned. Hello!

Some people also seem not to have learned from previous experiences. Like 9 /11 attacks.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

You should tell it to face of any japanese man. I would like to see consequences.

Hopefully he would admit I am right! If this J-guy wanted to hit someone he should go to the Diet & start swinging punches THERE, what the Japanese govt did to their own people 1930-45 was pretty bad, just imagine a Japanese NOT going along with the war, not wanting to have their son fly a kamikaze plane, do you have any idea what happened to people like that!

And dont forget those wonderful kempetai & how they had everyone spying on each other!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

my brother died on ww2 . victim of pride .if we are humble enough, maybe no fighting ,no war .

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

So many of my family died in the 1st Atomic War. The people of Okinawa were caught between the murdering Allies and murdering Japanese. Both of them refuse to accept responsibility for the wholesale murder of the people of Okinawa.
