What you want and what you will get are two totally different things.

In the run-up to the upper house election in July, Abe has started repeating his desire to hold talks with Kim,

Isn't this the most important line of the whole article? This is just another stunt by Abe to try and secure more seats in the election so he can do what he really wants to do and that is change the constitution.

They, the LDP have been dragging out this issue for so long, they could have had talks far earlier, but why kill the golden goose. Every time there is an election or something goes wrong, they raise the issue of the abductees

Abe must be a sucker for punishment.

Y'all know what Kim's response will be. Another public beat down of Abe, with the cookie cutter statements about "until Nippon fully and unconditionally apologizes and compensates for the extreme suffering endured by Koreans at the hands of Imperial Japan," there will be no talks.

Something utterly predictable along those lines.

Just posturing for the election.

From unconditional talk to frank talk in less than one month, how many talks would Abe have with North Korea ? Next one is no talk, I guess.

Interesting read first thing in the morning its election time.

Just posturing for the election.

Yup.

Almost like clockwork.

Wasn’t Abe and Japanese Govt against any dialogue with NK. If my memory serves they tried their best to sabotage Trump having a summit with Kim

Abe has cynically used this issue for political gain for over a decade with zero results. It is in many respects a fake issue. Japan abducted 500,000 Koreans when the country brutally occupied Korea. but no mention of that ever by Abe.

And as others have noted, Abe will have his clock cleaned by the NKs on this issue as they know he has painted himself into a corner with the ceaseless propaganda on this matter, that he has used to become PM twice This is similar to the fake immigration issue that Trump used to get elected. .

Too bad that's totally false. But many of us wish they had.

Abe, keep talking. That is your job.

No..thats actually about totally right. But funny how an election can turn politicians opinions 180 degrees.

There's no alternative to take them back by force (possible War). What's wrong with this remark?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

"Just posturing for the election."

but

"Around 61 percent of voters support Abe's recent shift in stance to seek talks with Kim Jong Un without preconditions, a Kyodo News survey"

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

He has literally had decades to move this "issue" forward but has constantly failed preferring to leave it unresolved allowing him to wear a blue badge on his lapel. For Japanese voters that's a winner as they munch down on cup noodles. Descending into poverty but the dear leader has a lapel pin....he must be great. I know! It's stupid but that's the level of political discourse that's allowed in Japan.

The slimy snake rears its head again given there's elections around the bend. Truly and utterly disgusting!!

It's too easy to bash Abe or any other PMs on this issue without presenting actual alternative method which should have been taken long time ago isn't it ? unless you are dreaming that NK would become sincere. It's

North Korea that Japan has been dealing with.

The NK issues always come up during pre elections. Another false flag!

"Abe said in a meeting in Tokyo with family members of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s."

Milking the victims of abduction once again. Must be an election coming up.

Scapegoating economic slump here with noko, great tactic..

And once again the people will swallow. This time he wants " frank* negos, meaning all these years he's been BS'ing the people. But both Noko and JGov know the truth, it's the Japanese people who Abe should Tell the truth to. He owes them.

I think that the PM keeps raising this issue of abductees because he wants compensation from NK.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Look, Abe is just posturing, plain and simple. He knows full well that Kim is not interesting in talking to Japan given how many times it's reneged on promises (of course NK being far worse), and so Abe looks like the good guy in 'trying' to seek talks. If Kim said "sure" tomorrow Abe would find a way to scuttle the talks before they happened. He's not actually interested in talking or resolving the issue, he's just interested in keeping his popularity up, and this is one distraction he can do it with. Certainly can't talk about Abenomics anymore, or gender equality, or anything else.
