Isn't it about time to get rid of this bald faced liar.
He's done enough damage already.
Time for a new PM, Japan.
Cricky
Tell a lie often enough, downplay the truth in the face of daily bad news, pay others to agree in the capacity of...consultants! He might be fooling himself, but thankfully, slowly more and more people are catching on to these shenanigans.
FightingViking
I find it disgraceful and absolutely unbecoming for a Head of State to lie through his teeth - especially when no-one really knows what is going to happen in Fukushima... Together with the different leakages already existing, today's typhoon heading that way.doesn't make it sound "under control" to me.....
ironsword
Abe is a sick joke of a PM but the controlled masses voted for him.

And the key section is:
badmigraine
So TEPCO's hand-chosed consultant, a nuclear village insider, who is paid directly by TEPCO, and probably vetted in advance by government players, says the things that TEPCO/J govt. want to hear...it's a "tiny detail", a tiny bit of runoff.
You wonder why they need a consultant at all for such a tiny, insignificant droplet of very slightly radioactive water.
badmigraine
hand-chosen, sorry!
George Smith
-Scientific estimates predict that the radioactive plume travelling east across the Pacific will likely hit the shores of Oregon, Washington State and Canada early next year. California will probably be impacted later that year. Because the ongoing flow of water from the reactor site will be virtually impossible to stop, a radioactive plume will continue to migrate across the Pacific affecting Hawaii, North America, South America and eventually Australia for many decades.-

George, you should be more concerned about the after effects of the bikini atoll nuclear tests, Fukushima is a millifraction of what happened courtesy of the US.

@ Bertie
Even before reading the comments, I had the exact same thought. I'm appalled the way in which we go through prime ministers like a roll of toilet paper, but I'd be happy to see this liar and his other fiasco 'abe-nomics' go down the pipes.
Jimizo
Abe's sales pitch at the IOC sounded like the schmaltz of the worst of Japanese TV delivered by a dodgy used car salesman. A cringe-inducing sight. Thankfully, this ridiculous excuse for a statesmen is being held up to the light.
George Smith
Abes a LIAR. Fukushima is Raging Out of Control and threatens the Entire Worlds Eco System. THe World must Act to stop this.
BertieWooster
Wavelength,
"Down the pipes" is where we are going. Thanks to Abe, that much is assured.
Ironsword,
I think you may be confusing the Japanese election system with the U.S.A.
The masses, controlled, as you rightly say, did not vote for Abe per se. They voted for the LDP and the LDP, in their infinite wisdom selected this "sick joke."
Scrote
People around here are annoyed that Abe seemed to be implying that it's "only Tohoku" that is affected and therefore not worth worrying about. It's quite far from Tokyo and we don't need to bother about it, appears to be his sentiment.
Harshana Sj
typical politicians,it seems "under control" on top,but he doesn't know about all the nukes leaking through the tanks to ground water and the sea?
smithinjapan
Everyone with a brain know that Abe's comments on the matter were a pile of crap.
jinjapan
All Japanese i've spoken with on the matter are extremely pleased Tokyo won the rights to host the olympics. Though those same people are totally embarrassed at the way Abe lied to the world in such a blatant matter .
Disillusioned
Yeah, the health risks from diluted radiation leaking into the sea are minimal, but too much exposure to Japanese politician's BS could be fatal!
Qamar
Right Abe, I think there is an invisible wall that doesn't let contaminated water travel around... We continue destroying all sense of balance in the world.
Fadamor
If this is all he said on the subject, then he's probably right. If this IS all he said on the subject, then where is his supposed quote that the leaks were "under control"? (quotation marks used in the article)
This is a horrible article. Why attribute a quote in the headline, but not include the actual quote in the article? If he said the leaks "were under control", then PUT THAT QUOTE IN THE ARTICLE, not some quote that talks about something else. It's not rocket science, people!
Assuming he DID actually say that the leaks "were under control", then he's obviously incorrect. Zero leakage would be required before leaks could be said to be "under control" and nobody from TEPCO or the government has stated that the leaks have stopped.
Dennis711
Even if that is all he said in his speech, what was quoted, that is still enough for him to be called a liar. What he said is not true. The contaminated water in the water table will make it to Tokyo. One way or another. I think Japan needs a new PM, the sooner the better.
Star-viking
The contaminated water will make it to Tokyo? I doubt it given the way the sea currents go around the coast of Fukushima.
Fadamor
Wouldn't that be 100% dependent on which way the groundwater around Daiichi seeps? That would be the key question: "Which way do the aquifers under Daiichi flow?"
As for the irradiated water that seeps into the ocean, it's almost immediately diluted by non-irradiated seawater down to a level that's well below safety concerns - certainly by the time it reaches the entrance of the bay, the readings would be negligible due to dispersion. The "inverse square law" that applies to gamma radiation emissions can also be applied to irradiated water where unlimited amounts of non-irradiated water are allowed to mix. In that aspect I have no trouble believing his statement.
JTDanMan
I am no fan of the man, but here, he's catching flak for all the wrong reasons.
His job, when going before the Olympic Committee, was to sell Tokyo. He needed to say that reassurance, no matter how stupid it really is.
The people of Japan should be thanking Abe for making himself look the fool. Because hosting the Olympics is good for Japan: its good for the economy, and good for Japan's standing in the world.

The damage from radiation is accumulative so there is no actual "safe level" but most countries have to set up a standard so they have a number but that is just a number. And the most important thing, fish do not stay at one place if you didnt know. They move around. The fish around Fukushima that are contaminated and they are not going to stay near Fukushima only, they will move around to many distant places. so not only are fish from Northern Japan a threat but fish everywhere is a threat as time goes on, and it has already been two years since the original explosion. People consume fish everywhere.
Somewhere
Yeah, whatever. The truth that Tokyo and other cities are highly contaminated will eventually come out. The mainstream media and politicians can't hide it forever. The Internet will see to that.

Abe didn't have a choice but the US advisor's statement is very disturbing.
If Abe steps down he has ready replacement though - Aso :-)
Then after his gaffe they can take turns - Abe- Aso - Abe - Aso....

OMG!!!! We're DOOMED!!!!! Fish have been swimming in the irradiated waters where TWENTY-THREE nuclear bomb tests were conducted for DECADES! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikini_Atoll Those fish then departed for other areas and irradiated those areas too! We've been dead for decades and just didn't realize it!!!! (rolls eyes)

@Fadamor,
The bigger fish that range over long distances in the ocean quickly lose whatever cesium contamination they’ve picked up. However, the higher concentration of strontium-90 that is now in the outflow poses a trickier problem, because it is a bone-seeking isotope. Cesium is like salt, it goes in and out of your body quickly, but Strontium gets into your bones.
ka_chan
Now how was it that said
kurisupisu
“Now, to get into a little, tiny detail about it, is there a little, tiny bit of runoff that may have cesium in it? The answer is, yes there is, but that’s still under control from a public health and safety and environmental protection point of view,” he told the Associated Press.
So that is why Tepco has just released 1,130 tons in one day?
Right, it's under control........

What happens when one tells a lie? More lies have to be uttered to cover all previous lies. Is Japan a honorable country any more when its leader seems incapable of telling the difference between what is real and what not to say?
