Come to my country, the foreigners are better protected than the locals. You should know which country !.

MOFA needs to sit down with NPA and come down on the OTIT and the Employers.

This is one of the reasons why I think so many foreigners complain about Japan being a hard country to live in. They come with a low salary and minimal Japanese skills, and are placed into a all-Japanese speaking environment where the people don't inherently want to be there.

Indians (who are not a listed country under the technical visa program) for example are usually coming to Japan on normal visas and placed into offices where some people speak conversational English, so often they have more positive experiences of Japan, and English speakers tend to be more understanding of foreign cultures. When you look at the exchange rate vis-a-vis India then it is a lot of money and a step-up in terms of infrastructure etc... which gives you a positive view of living in Japan.

Failing to properly address the problems during the first year is understandable, a lot of things go unexpectedly and nobody is expecting the system to be abused.

But after these years? there is no excuse, the people responsible are failing at their jobs, but they keep doing it as if it was inevitable and exposing more and more trainees to abuse.

At some point the higher ups have to recognize the failures and heads must roll, if the people in charge are unable to do their jobs then call it quits and put forward a better system made from the ground with the objective of preventing abuses.

If the j-government can't do anything to black companies that are mainly staffed by Japanese nationals, expect even less for the slaves program..

The Japanese way of ignoring issues until the problem is so large the dirt under the rug that keeps getting swept becomes a mountain that is too enormous to ignore.

Great insight--valid points.

Anyone familiar with this technical internship program certainly knows that the system will be abused.

Great, Japan following Europe by introducing an underclass of resentful, discriminated against foreign workers.

So about 20 years until we will have drugs, grooming gangs and knife crime.

Two solutions. Either compulsory 3 year repatriation or, and this is a long stretch... ensure equal and fair treatment. However, the whole system is designed to create a cheap workforce so we are doomed.

Not the land of milk and honey?

This system is one of the reasons why Japan is #1 in labor trafficking and is one of the biggest human rights abusers as well. But since it still makes the government and companies a mint, they'll never bother to protect for foreign "interns".

three Vietnamese women complained that they had been scolded loudly by their superiors

If you want to come to Japan and work in Japan, then you better bring with you a Japanese work ethic ( ie, "get the job done no matter what" - attitude).

If you still behave and work as if you are back in your own country then:

1. Don't be surprised if you get scolded

2. Go back to your country and complain why your country is not providing enough jobs for you.

There is a reason why Japanese ( and Taiwanese & S. Korean) work/products/service is well respected : They have high standards.

If you, as a foreign worker, cannot meet those standards, then don't complain. Go back to your own country if you think things are better there.

Why should Japanese lower their standards just for you if YOU can't step up?
