Abe's anti China policy is not justified. If Japan concerns about South China's Sea and East China's Sea, it is wise to have a good relationship with China, not to upset China. Does China ever block Japanese shipping, not at all. But what will China do if Japan provokes China in both Seas ? Japan will only get worse treatment, not better.

In the past five years under Abe's bad policy, Japanese investment in China greatly reduced. Who suffered ? Who lost money ? China has the largest middle class, as well largest undeveloped population, perfect for Japanese business model. China also produces the largest graduates and engineers, the largest patents, and in 10 years, China will be both economic power and technology power. Abe is wise to not miss the last chance to get along with China, before it is too late.

Wow, 1,000 executives and trade officials to discuss China-Japan economic cooperation in third countries. Very impressive. I wish Abe will deliver an impressive speech as well, to lay foundation for next 10, or even 100 years relationship with China.

The Japanese view is no different to the majority of the West. You try to get the best you can from China's 1.3 billion consumers while, at the same time, being wary of China's other actions and continuing the alliance with the U.S and, by extension, Europe.

Its all really standard geo-politics at this point. This is a common approach throughout Asia and much of the world.

Matt Hartwell, Japan is not west, never will be. Japan is the Chinese name given to Japan 2000 years ago, and never changed since. The meaning of Japan is east, where the sun rises.

You cant trust the Chinese gov they have no class and no honor and no manners

Its would be more beneficial for japan to do business with SE

Japan will eventually be made/bullied into/bought into making a choice between two radically different systems with equally different visions for the future. Choose wisely. Please tread carefully though because economic expediency is a trap. Careful who you go to bed with and know what you stand for.

I know Japan is not the West, but it is part of the Western alliance network.

Japan is playing the smart game. Taking economic gains will still fostering that alliance and building up its own defense. There is no alternative for Japan given the need to foster growth and the realization that China has historically been hostile towards Japan, still holds desires on Japanese territory and is increasingly authoritarian and fiercely nationalist.

You should strive to do both. Its not a either/or argument unless you want it to be or unless America and China force Japan to make a decision. I don't see that yet. Its been made abundantly clear by LDP politicians and public servants that this is how Japan see's its place in the world.

Mediator, alternative to China in S.E.A, taking economic gains in China, U.S alliance member, keep the peace with China.

Do you think that Japan should abandon its alliance with America and the West and rely on China? Really? You better pray that Japan has incredible success in China under its 2025 program because if you did do that you can look forward to embargo on exports to the U.S and potentially, Europe, Australia, Canada etc etc.

Can Japan afford that gamble? No it cant. And if things turn hostile, Japan is on its own.

Play the middle path. It is the most sensible way forward.

Abe's Oct 26 meeting with Xi, officially confirmed on Friday

But it was planned long before Trump's tariffs on China.

What is this foolishness PM Abe?

This is clearly a clear treachery to the most Japan-friendly nation in the whole universe, Taiwan, ROC!

Why not have a state visit to Taipei first?

Matt Hartwell, Japan can be a part of Chinese alliances too, if China wanted. Historically, Japan was Chinese tributary state. Japan is genetically and culturally linked to China, thus the name of small China. Besides, your west network makes no sense at all. China is also a partner of the west. In many ways, China has deeper relationship with the west. British was a Chinese tributary state too, long ago. Your ideology to split the west and China doesn't make realistic sense, other than entertain yourself, in an orgasm mood.

Taiwan is clearly not an official ally of Japan. There is absolutely no benefit to visiting Taiwan at all. If Japan takes this opportunity to form an economic cooperation with China while China and the USA clashes, Japan will be on the top with being both an ally and close friend of America while enjoying an economic alliance with China, helping them out in times of need. Trump is gonna lose the next election anyways; no reason why Japan should make an enemy out of China to please Trump when his leadership won't last.
