While life long dictators is not something I think anyone should want, and as much as Abe has his issues, the previous merry go round of Japanese PMs was pretty embarrassing.

Same as NK and Russia, nothing to report

I don't see how any of that would serve the Japanese people well.

Interesting article. One must remember that this entire article is opinionated by the writer using a quotable person's opinionated words. Much of the wording are judgements made by the speaker and writer. (One must first look at the words being used as being not only judgemental but also highly biased.)
Not to say that what is being told is correct or wrong or that the facts do or do not support the conclusions made by the speaker or the writer. It is but one perspective on what is happening in Japanese national politics in view of what is happening domestically and internationally.
The problem here is that as in all media, news and otherwise, and here in this instance, it is "designed" by use of words to "offer" one perspective on an issue. Then to keep that issue in its own perspective, it adds other factors to support that one issue directly or indirectly without opposing perspectives that could be and would have been considered.
I guess limited space and time forces that upon the media.
