Note that China has disputes with EVERY ONE of its neighbors, not just Japan. But Japan and Korea are the only ones that get hit with the economic stick when China feels especially belligerent.

ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said on Sunday that the bloc would ask China to begin formal and official talks on a legally binding code of conduct aimed at easing tensions in the South China Sea “as soon as possible”.

Legally? is Taiwan(ROC), the legal owner of Spratly islands and Paracel islands, in the meeting? these people discuss Taiwanese real estates without informing Taiwan? a group of pirates!

Happy gathering, no serious business.

Well and balanced post! The problem of Taiwan is Fishermen have gut to stand up for their rights. President Ma has no gut for protecting national interest. Taiwan needs strong, decisive and touch leader like Ishihara Taiwanese can say NO!

The article said that there are 10 members of ASEAN as reported and only Vietnam, Philippines Malaysia and Brunei have dispute with China. Where did the" EVER ONE" nations you mentioned come from. Would you like to list the rest of them. I could not find them. Taiwan is part of China. Even considering Malaysia and Brunei both claims were I believe of minor nature which could be resolved . Only Philippines and Vietnam. Vietnam could take a longer while for both parties to come to a resolution. In the Philippines case even the Manila Standard Today on the 28th April 2012 stated that the Scarborough Shoal belongs to China.

What you are talking about is exactly opposite of facts.

I really doubt if you can find Japan and China on google map.

China is trying to claim virtually all of the South China Sea. That's asinine - look how close that red line is to the coasts of other countries! That's like Italy (Roman Empire) trying to claim virtually all of the Mediterranean Sea thru historical documents. Just like the US, it's just all about the oil.

I just hope for cooperation and maybe persuade China to "shelve" their claims. China's plate is already full with the Senkaku dispute and their own internal problems.

No Tian467,

I think you are the one who got the facts wrong! Japan is in dispute with everyone of its neighbours including Russia, North Korea, South Korean, China and Taiwan.....Get your facts straight first.

Actually no, because China is so big that it has many neighnors. However China does lead all of Asia with over 17 territorial disputes. It is also he only country in Asia with a declared territorial and military expansion agenda, and freely mixes diplomacy with economic actions to achieve it's aims and therefore considere the biggest threat to peace in the region by all of Asia.

Not all 10 members of ASEAN have national shorelines on the South China Sea. Vietnam most certainly does, as do Brunei, Philippines, and Malaysia. These four countries form the shores that define the Sea (along with China's own shoreline).

China claims all of the waters of the South China sea except for tiny ribbons of water than run parallel to the shores of the other four countries. This PRC's claim entirely ignores the international legal standard.

In very rough terms, the South China Sea is in the form of a quadrilateral. Of the four sides to it, China's shoreline only amounts to one side (northern). The other three sides of that quadrilateral belong to Vietnam (western), Malaysia/Brunei (southern) and the Philippines (western).

"No other country talked about it. All countries are interested in economic growth, sustainable balanced development in this region."

This sentence pretty much sums up the agenda of the meeting.

This is merely a commentary from a reader.

"Mr. Arches is from San Juan City. He is a retired investment and merchant banker, a retired Certified Public Accountant, and a retired economist who loves to dabble in history and political science, among many other interests.

Everyman is Manila Standard Today’s new column for citizens’ commentary on pressing issues in the Philippines and in the world. Anybody who feels he or she has something of value to add to the discussion on the pertinent issue is encouraged to contribute."

China’s economic and commercial power is undeniable and it makes China an attractive destination for global investment and entrepreneurship. However, convincing the liberal democratic international community to look beyond trade and economics and to accept China as a credible diplomatic and political power is a considerable challenge for China’s public diplomacy. China is reinforced by the Communist Party’s determination to maintain authoritarian rule and the use of the military threat against Japan, Taiwan and Tibet. This undermines the idea that Chinese soft power is all about selling national and cultural values.

No... Taiwan is Taiwan, not a part of China.

China is a big country, in terms of size the 17 territorial disputes are not a big number at all. Considering When mentioned about territorial and military expansion, and mixing diplomacy with economic actions, these are quite normal compared to other countries in the world especially the US. The US has been doing them for years. China is not the biggest threat to peace but the opposite is true. China is served as a balancing of power in the world; we need a strong China for a more peaceful world. In the news you can see the US having a war with someone all the time, why is that? This leads one to believe negative image of China is created by the US to discredit China. Fear of China is a political ploy so that every move that China makes is seen with suspicion and fear. Communism is no longer a threat in this time and age. Some of you probably can see that China doesn’t like to interfere with other countries’ internal affairs unlike the US. How many times that people are burning the US flags, and do you see any of them burning Chinese flags? Why do you think terrorists like to attack the US and not China? In some countries you don’t even want to say you are an American.

This sounds like a chicken or egg scenario. China is a big country due to their expansionist ideals hence the 17 territorial disputes.

The PRC wishes every nation in the ASEAN to roll over and play dead while it robs them blind. Bravo to those nations that do not bow down to the paper tiger known as the PRC. If push comes to shove the PRC will tuck it's tail between the legs and run off.

The PRC is only a naval power on paper. Their navy is made up of old Soviet era floating rust buckets. Naval warfare is nothing like land warfare. There is no way to force your ships to move forward through the fear of a machine gun pointed to their backs.

Naval warfare is fought and won by training, tactics and weapons. None of which the PRC and it's PLAN are known for.

The PRC is the locust of the world and the only way to fight it is with facts and strength.

Redcliff: "Taiwan is part of China."

Tell that to the people of the sovereign nation of the Republic of China. The Republic of China lost control of the mainland in 1949 and moved to Taiwan after the Communists overthrew them.

So that means that the government of the Republic of China is the government in exile and the PRC is the usurper.

China's defence industry may be improving but it remains scattered, inefficient and over-dependent on high-tech imports from Russia. Also, the PLA also has little recent combat experience. In comparison, a decade of conflict in the Middle East has polished tactics of U.S. forces. The problem is that China's intentions are so unpredictable. Sure, China is increasingly willing to engage with global institutions. However, China engages with the rest of the world on its own terms, suspicious of organizations it believes are run to serve Western interests. The dangers of military miscalculation are too high for comfort.

Actually, no, China has 28 neighbors, and most of them, including Russia, Mongolia, etc. settled territorial disputes with China. Currently, it's Japan (WW2 Legacy annexation), Vietnam and the Philippines.

I didn't know WW2 started in 1895.

SCS is a completely misleading name ,it must be abolished ,the sooner the better. The name makes greedy China wrongly think that this entire sea area belongs to its backyard.
