"Asians"?

I very much respect President Xi from the bottom of my heart and I think under his leadership, China will lead the world sooner or later especially with the focus on technologies and humanity

"As the global spotlight on the nation’s domestic policies has dimmed, lawyers for dissidents increasingly face a terrible choice: acquiescence or imprisonment."

And South Korea feels slighted because Donald will only be there for 24 hours.... booo hooo... aaawww, only 24 hours when he'll be in Japan for twice that. So sad.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Polls show considerable opposition to Trump in South Korea — one recent Pew poll found that more than three-quarters of South Korean respondents consider Trump “dangerous” - That says all you need to know.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

My expectation is how Trump surprises us this time.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Ngoc lien of vietnam said it all

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Do people think he has magically improved the economy since February? Are the good results the effects of his presidency, or of the previous one's?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Poor teams of translators, having to figure out what Trump means

9 ( +9 / -0 )

But my American friends have said that after he became president, their lives and the economy has gotten better.

Funnily enough, I have heard exactly the opposite. I assume this comment says something about who you are as much as your friends.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

@Hakuba - and what does it say about him? (It is funny how his post is no longer here.....)

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Except Japanese comments, it seems other country people are all keen on Trump behavior.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I have a slogan for him: 'Make America Friendly Again' because the U.S has always been a friendly country, being the dream of many people, up until now. I hope Donald Trump will not distance the U.S and isolate it from other countries. I hope he will make the U.S friendly again like it used to be."

Really? Not sure his/her (Vietnamese) parents would agree. The US under Bush father & son weren't particularly 'friendly' either. Trump's 'my way or the highway' approach has very much been US international politics mantra for decades as many of his predecessors also often antagonised the rest of the world. Obama and, to a lesser extent perhaps, Bill Clinton, were exceptions.

Trump & Abe combination is highly volatile & dangerous; the probability of a war, a nuclear war with NK is increasing. Japanese citizens need to think about the consequences. Will the missiles really be fired to continental USA or actually more easily into Tokyo, Osaka & Soeul and achieved the same purpose for NK? It will means more than 10 million death within a few days.

This is not a simple or imagined matter. Have politicians & policy makers think through the consequences?

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

@bluesky. 10 million is a low estimate. You are talking about 70 year old little nuclear bombs. Thermonuclear bombs will wipe out all electricical devises. Fires, infrastructure, water, heating and nuclear meltdowns all over Japan and SK, as well as the imminent destruction of 23 million NKs.

70 NK subs will probably finish major US coastal cities, but probably only 10 will secede as USA has major technological advantage. If 50 ICBMs are launched similtaniously at different targets, as well as 200 MRBMs, there is a theoretical chance that up to 20% will reach targets, with a few failing and hitting unintended targets. The war will drag Russian and China into the picture. Nobody knows what will happen.

It makes me sad that all of you make personal attacks on my president. If you are trying to convince people sitting on the fence that your view the present issue is superior, you will get nowhere with your personal attacks. Try to positively debate the difference of your position and you may have a chance at swaying those that are undecided. Continue down you present path with personal attacks against President Trump and you will only reinforce those that agree with you and anger those that disagree with you.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Not being a US citizen your president is not mine. Ditto for other posters.

Guess you are fine when others (non_us) are criticized. The pendulum swings both ways.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

pacint, I enjoy a good debate, but not personal attacks. I'm not sure what you are referencing to my criticizing other folks. Perhaps you can enlighten all of us and convince us in a positive way.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

It makes me sad that all of you make personal attacks on my president. If you are trying to convince people sitting on the fence that your view the present issue is superior, you will get nowhere with your personal attacks.

Do you think people should follow the example of your president in terms of refraining from vulgarity, name-calling and personal attacks?

It probably would raise the standard of discussion.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Again, you are demonstrating personal attacks and not how your position on a particular issue is superior and try to sway people to you side. Please quit with the angry posts and try to be positive and rational about the issues at hand.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Trumps speech was actually good compared to the other speeches. Perhaps he has been told to stfu and stay on script.  Personally I would like to see the Japanese and South Koreans arm themselves to the teeth so we can get our military back home and put to work in the USA defending borders and spending less defense dollars overseas.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Again, you are demonstrating personal attacks and not how your position on a particular issue is superior and try to sway people to you side. Please quit with the angry posts and try to be positive and rational about the issues at hand.

You are making a fair point. I'm just asking if you think your president should also refrain from vulgarity, name-calling and personal attacks.

Some of his supporters like this type of approach. How about you?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

As an Asian I expect Trump to be...well like he has always been.

What I care about is Japan’s constitution and how the changes will affect the future Asian arms race.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As said before, I'm all about debating the issue and not attacking the person making the argument.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

"I do want him (Trump) to be more cool-headed. If he continues only provoking, the situation may actually become explosive."

This is a good point. Trump's name-calling in a vulgar exchange between Trump and North Korea may not be the best way to approach this issue. Some argue this increases the chances of a potentially catastrophic escalation.

What do you think? Should Trump refrain from name-calling?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"The U.S. president said he could not understand why a country of samurai warriors did not shoot down the missiles"

Trump is a not only an embarrassing moron, he is dangerous. And, probably a criminal who happily used a foreign power's resources to win an election. You would do well to use him as an example of how low information voters can be manipulated, and how corporations willingly fund such corruption.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

He is merely using the same language that the North Korean Dictatorship has been using. Has anything happened since North Korea was using the same type of language the last 10 or so years? I think not. Please don't forget North Korea is a murderous regime that has starved millions of its citizens and illegally pursued nuclear weapons in violation of international law and numerous United Nations sanctions. While you can criticize your country, to do so in North Korea, it invites a fun filled trip to a concentration camp, not only for your, but your children, your parents and your grand parents for the rest of your natural lives.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

gogogo:

"Asians"?

Well they sure as heck don't look African.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

He is merely using the same language that the North Korean Dictatorship has been using. Has anything happened since North Korea was using the same type of language the last 10 or so years? I think not.

This is like trying to nail jelly to a wall. You talk about wanting to discuss thei issue and sidestep the first question I ask you.

It’s a simple question - should Trump be name-calling in this way?

Given that North Korea looks likely to have developed far more destructive weaponry and has escalated tensions with increased missile tests, the stakes are higher.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Jimizo, let me address your question in a direct way....President Trump should not be name calling, however he is using the same type of language that the murderous regime in North Korea is using. He hopes that he will make them understand that they will be defeated in a spectacular if follow through with going to war with peaceful nations. Should we continue to let the Murderous regime in North Korea increase their destructive capabilities, or deal with them now? To cower and let them be increase their destructive power will not help the North Korean people or anyone else around them.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Jimizo, let me address your question in a direct way....President Trump should not be name calling

You should address questions in a direct way. That's very helpful in discussions. Why did it take so long to get an answer to this simple question? This is a problem when dealing with Trump supporters - they know his character flaws but bend themselves into all kinds of contortions to avoid stating the obvious - Trump's character itself is a problem. He's hot-headed, petulant and speaks or tweets before putting his mind into gear.

Criticising Trump's character isn't irrelevant to the problem of North Korea.

Do you think North Korea have been more or less belligerent and willing to test missiles since Trump took power and matched them in talking tough?

The evidence seems to suggest North Korea have ratcheted things up.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don’t understand what you are saying. Are you saying we should allow North Korea to threaten its neighbors and increase its military capabilities? I think that would be bad for everyone around. We should take a stand against the incredible evil in North Korea.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

elcid95:

Not sure who you're talking to, but let me put it this way. When someone is holding a machine gun and a group of innocent people hostage, the first thing the police will say is NOT 'Go on, I dare you to shoot those people'.

You don't let the one madman let another madman kill innocent people to prove the former's point and spite the latter.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

The evidence seems to suggest North Korea have ratcheted things up.

I believe the sanctions are beginning to work.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@ ElCid95

It makes me sad that all of you make personal attacks on my president. If you are trying to convince people sitting on the fence that your view the present issue is superior, you will get nowhere with your personal attacks.

LOL, you must be one of the guys who told Yumu Katsuyama that

their lives and the economy has gotten better.

as written in the article. Also,

He is merely using the same language that the North Korean Dictatorship has been using.

I don't ever recall Kim Jung-un saying things like

Grab ’em by the p*ssy. You can do anything.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It makes me sad that all of you make personal attacks on my president.

Then you probably shouldn’t have elected a moron. Whether you are sad or not, the world is going to call your president as the world sees your president. You cannot stop that by complaining. The only way to stop it is to elect someone who is capable.

If you are trying to convince people sitting on the fence that your view the present issue is superior, you will get nowhere with your personal attacks.

We don’t need to convince anyone of anything. We already know he is a moron, we’re just discussing it. We also know that if you people were stupid enough to elect him, then it’s entirely doubtful that anything will convince you of anything. It’s not like he got elected and suddenly we realized he was incompetent - it was very clear he was clueless during the campaign. And yet you people elected him. You can’t fix the stupidity of a nation. You can only point it out.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

President Trump should not be name calling, however he is using the same type of language that the murderous regime in North Korea is using

Ok, so now it’s clear as to the standard you set for your president. As long as he keeps himself to the same standard as a dictator, you’re ok with his behaviour.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The evidence seems to suggest North Korea have ratcheted things up.

I believe the sanctions are beginning to work.

Perhaps but I was asking about the effect of Trump’s trash talk.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

President Donald Trump is actually an inspirational real-life 'American Dream' story where the underdog despite facing even the organized objection of his very own party won the US Presidency.

This wonderful American democracy where they freely elect their president through their votes in contrast to totalitarian regimes where the state elect their leaders, ironically exposed the immaturity and lack of democratic spirit of the supporters of the defeated candidate.

In the process , unbeknownst to them, they are themselves making a mockery of American democracy and making America the laughingstock of the world.

How could it be that the most impressive and mature example of beacon of democracy could not accept their duly elected president?

They are even blaming the Russians and Martians for the defeat of Hillary!

Isn't that pathetic?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This wonderful American democracy where they freely elect their president through their votes

And the one with the most votes loses.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Jimizo

And the one with the most votes loses.

Hahaha! Isn't that incredible?

Blame it on the Russians and Martians and maybe Kim Jung Un too!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Hahaha! Isn't that incredible?

It certainly is. Do you think that's a wonderful democracy?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Jimizo

It certainly is. Do you think that's a wonderful democracy?

*

Wonderful for the victor , awful for the sour grapes!

It seems it's the US Constitution that needs some updating and not Nippon! Lol!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It'x called a "Republic" not a democracy , Giant difference ! When you learn the difference you will also understand the " Electoral College" .How brilliant & how much foresight the "Founding Fathers" had. Perhaps then understand the American system and why only one America

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Most 'Democratic' countries are actually Republics and agree it matters.

I think Switzerland is the only true Democracy.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Tennohaka

There are some Amerikano scholars who says the Electoral College is already archaic.

Especially the losers. Lol!
