It's all so skewed that it doesn't matter what most of the electorate thinks, though. I personally suspect that most Japanese people would prefer not to have the LDP in power but see no way to kick them out.

Certainly the Japanese electorate doesn't.

That being said they're proposing giving the leadership the power to dissolve factions, banning fundraising parties and holding Diet members responsible if accountants get charged with any illicit activities.
How? Aso got beaten by a landslide in 2009, the only election he fought as party leader. What could he possibly do to win a landslide?

And in other “what did you expect?” news, bear uses sylvan area for lavatorial purposes.
In a way I suppose it’s good to see that the malignant heart of the LDP is unwilling to even pretend that there’s any genuine intention to reform the profound corruption.
Not that it makes the slightest jot of difference. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see, once Kishida is deposed, Aso gets another crack of the whip, calls a snap election and gets a landslide victory.
Some electorates never learn.

The various factions within the government were banned 30 years ago but they soon came back. This appears to be one of the problems with a one-party democracy.

Is Fumio Kishida a Prime Minster in name only?
Is Taro Aso refusal to dissolve/disband his faction, evidence of a toxic fiefdom within government ruling party ,generation after generation, politicians that hand from father to son an entitlement to maintain control from within.
The very definition of the career political parasite, without fear of having power and influence removed at the ballot box.
The means to select individuals, the chosen few that hold position of authority that can ensure a corrupt system of leadership continues without and real danger of change.
Call for a end to this sham, through a statutory independent inquiry, bring into the light of day what these slush funds true purpose is leveraged to achieve ruling government.

Aso has circled the wagons around his gang and won't dissolve because he feels untouchable and unassailable.

Absolutely spot on, especially the last sentence.

Aso would have to be the luckiest man in Japan. Born into his privileged position of power, consistently surviving making gaffes and faux pas that would damage a more thoughtful person’s career. He is a rusted-on relic of everything that is wrong with society here.

Of course it would be Aso who would refuse to disband his faction.

You can just feel the moral superiority of the democratic principles, rule of law and rules based order.
Don't even get started on their links to shady religious orgs and wartime profiteering.
