Australian PM announces new global nuclear disarmament body

Good on Rudd for having the guts to say something like this. I heard he received good suppport from previous defence secretaries in the US but absolutely nothing from the White House. Strange. Why would the US think it's ok for them to have nukes, but not others? Should Rudd's ideas succeed, he'll do alot for the Asia-Pasific region.

Nukes are us, defense policies, since hiroshimq/nagasaki nuke attacks,was based on MAD (Mutually assured destruction) defense safety belief systems of cold war. These iron curtain years are over.

During cold war days, the world was very lucky, to be have come out, of those dark iron curtain cold war years.

Ideal global defense for all nations in world, should be one where there is zero MAD(mutually assured destruction) belief systems. Global nuke powers must sit together more, to build greater nuke safety nets.

May be mandarin know how, kevin rudd, can do some kind better magic with china/west/russia/india/pakistan and nuke defense safety nets.

A safer global/apec nations defence and nuke defense systems, must have high safety net built in. The leaders of UN, must be in discussions about more future treaties,like SALT treaties of past.

Kevin Rudd, must help the world, get out of mutually assured defense beliefs and shift to normal conventional defenses of pre-194os days, if this is possible.

Nukes and MAD systems, does not paint as a brighter future as nuclear energies does.

Mankind can progress further on global nations defense, if we can shift back to pre-1940s weapons,defense policies of nations.

Destructions powers should be reduced and creation powers must be increased via virtual/physical communications/trade links. Communications without breakdowns, is the future.

Lucky there was no nukes in iraq war, where many feared in 2003,there could be bio-weapons or nukes in that war.

Abolish all nuke weapons for safer earth. Nations can defends themselves via normal conventional WEAPONS.

i'll give him credit for his ideals, but is it going to work against major nukers like the us, russia, or china? especially 'nukes r' us' the us who has actually used two in hiroshima and nagasaki? - i don't think so.

Regardless of what we think here on JT, it'll sound pretty good to the Japanese government. This is the stuff good diplomacy is made of (and please don't confuse good diplomacy with good goverment).

I don't think he is a hypocrit in respect on his will to defend the NPT. The purpose of the NPT was not for global nuclear disarmorment, it was virtually an instrument to legitimize the continued oligopoly of nuclear weapons among the 5 permanent security council states. As China is one of nuclear states of that treaty, indirectly aiding or abetting China to maintain nuclear arms is not a breach of Australia's commitment to the NPT .
