North Korea must be recognised as a nuclear state. Nothing will change Kim's mind. But he should know that any use of them would result in his demise.
PS Has anyone noticed how nobody talks about this summit being held in Cambodia, where Hun Sen clings to power since earlier than my birth?
Double-standards at bestest.

North Korea continues to refuse talks with the US.
But as a post above points out, if NK continues to poke a hornets nest, it faces more than just a stinging reply.
Time NK agrees to talks with the US and SK. Missile diplomacy is an expensive failure.

Well North Korea has shut down any talks with the US the last few years, will not talk to them. NK is nuclear now.
NK has called the current SK govt "scum-like" and told SK they want nothing to do with them, and the best thing for SK is to not talk to them.
Who did you have in mind?
I'm sure NK and China talk in private.
But, (from NK point of view), why would they waste time talking to people that are going to ask them to de-nuclearize. That'll NEVER NEVER NEVER happen now during Kim's reign.
It's a brick wall impass.

A positive step.

""U.S. officials in the past have expressed frustration that lower-level Chinese officials have proven unable or unwilling to speak for Xi, and are hoping the face-to-face summit will enable progress""
Sounds very familiar, my daily saga, I can NEVER get a straight answer.

If North Korea gets recognized as a Nuclear power;
Iran will be next.
Saudi Arabia will want them too if Iran and Pakistan already has nukes.
Turkey a rising power will want them too., balance Iran and Saudi Arabia.
South Korea over 70% of citizens want Nuclear Weapons. Only a matter of time If you allow North Korea to keep theirs.
Singapore and Vietnam will want them too as insurance against China.
Australia is already getting nuclear Submarines. Could very easily get nuclear weapons if threatened or needed.
By allowing poor North Korea, a 3rd world country in poverty and under development to get Nuclear Weapons.... You open the door for any country to try and get Nuclear Weapons. Not just the big powers.

Look what happened when Ukraine was denuclearized and signed the Budapest memorandum. Putin promised not to attack, and UN to defend them in case of an attack. Seems like both Russia and US broke their promises. So, why on earth would NK abandon their nuclear weapons? That would be totally insane!

And so say all of us

The layout of seats in this AP photo betrays the fact that the U.S. has taken the initiative in the whole affairs, a major player of the game, South Korea and Japan playing only sideline roles.

A wonderful photo opportunity for both sides.
NK continue to refuse talks. Thats why Biden has not gone there.
Has any been invited?
Why is there no peace declaration from NK?
North Korea is the most unstable nation with nuclear weapons and that translates as a danger to friend and foe alike.
And yet North Korea refuses any dialog while the US continues to offer talks with no pre conditions, again and again. The fault lies with NK not Biden, Japan or SK. Is China using its influence to convince NK to agree to dialog? No, it is not.

@EdwardCanada
So, you don’t remember Donald Trump visiting North Korea?
How is it that Biden hasn’t?
Which Japanese Prime Minister has?
Why is there no offer of a peace declaration from Japan?
North Korea is a nuclear state and there is not a chance of winning a nuclear war.
The only option is dialogue.
Andy
Don't forget, Biden has a great deal of experience with human rights issues.

If one were to place the various parties on a scale and weigh "AGGRESSION and THREAT", the three thuggish and militaristic 'allies' (see Master and vassals) would outweigh Joseon a thousand to one. Bullies endlessly practicing the invasion and destruction of a country almost within sight of the targeted country with their swollen gangs of young people well trained to mass murder using a constantly increased supply of lethality, one might expect the target country, as small as this targeted country is, to try to say SOMETHING in response however small and corruptly overblown by its adversaries it might be. And ANY Hanguk saram who supports the hostility of Hanguk's wealth and political classes toward Joseon is a traitor to their own People.
kurisupisu
How is it that nobody is talking to North Korea?
Maybe the antagonists should considers all the players?

Not taking any sides here but you know what happens if you keep poking a stick at a hornets nest.
