Wow! That's a surprise ..... thought nobody. Can believe he is still hanging on as P.M

Cake shop owners in Tokyo disappointed too...

14 ( +16 / -2 )

His aide just googled entry into Japan and realized Japan is closed. sounds like 35% chance he may choose to go to South Korea instead.

too bad, I hope Japan gets more fish and chips.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

He only cancelled as he was told he couldn’t get a wheelie bin full of booze onto the flight as it would be over the weight limit.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Heartbreaking news.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

What did he hope to accomplish? The UK has absolutely nothing to offer Japan.

-12 ( +10 / -22 )

The UK has absolutely nothing to offer Japan.

Cheese. Whisky. Cheese. Clotted cream. Cheese. Crumpets. Cheese.

26 ( +26 / -0 )

What does the UK have to offer Japan...? Fish and chips has already been mentioned; and the most wonderful gin, Tanqueray which was originally distilled on Vine Street in the Bloomsbury district of London by Charles Tanqueray, using a recipe he'd developed himself in 1838 or quite possibly earlier...

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Should have told him that also parties here can quite sometimes develop into something great and unforgettable, and maybe even something he could never ever experience on his British isles. lol

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Oh, and here I was havinf thought it was due to the harsh opposition to his planned trip by the JT crowd yesterday! Hi Boris.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The UK is a major world power

and if you don't believe that look at all the British Museum's loot.

able to project its military around the world.

demonstrated to its own subjects in Derry 50 years ago yesterday.

It is also a permanent member of the security council

...an unrepresentative legacy of WW2

one of the world's oldest democracies

yes, dear. Care for more tea?

What does the UK have to offer Japan...?

Apart from what's been mentioned - how about friendship? A shared island mentality? Irn Bru... bannocks... shortbread... clotted cream and jam scones... the back catalogue of "the Goodies"...

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Cancel him, he couldn't work stacking shelves for crying out loud.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Cheese. Whisky. Cheese. Clotted cream. Cheese. Crumpets. Cheese.

Cleo, you forgot cheese. But good that you mentioned whiskey. What about Kilkenny, oh sorry that is Irish.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Japan has enough clowns to be entertained, no regret

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

To bad for Boris. Seems he missed out on a chance at a great party at “2-3-1 Nagata-chō”(aka Shushō Kantei). - Regards to @cleo 4:23pm et al. (Shopping list is now complete):[

**[*The UK has absolutely nothing to offer Japan**]***. Cheese. Whisky. Cheese. Clotted cream. Cheese. Crumpets. Cheese

"But good that you mentioned whiskey."

Excuse me, but you seem to have mis-spelled 'whisky'...

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Boris couldn’t take being put in APA hotel for a week!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Cleo, you forgot cheese.

Sorry, zurc.

To clarify; Cheddar, Wensleydale, Stilton, Double Gloucester, Red Leicester, Lancashire, Caerphilly, Cheshire, Sage Derby, Cotswold, to be going on with.

I never mentioned whiskey. I shudda said Scotch, I suppose. Single malt if possible.

Not a big fan of the Irish variety, but yes that too for them what like it. (Kinda find the republic/northern distinction a bit academic, but I suppose it matters in matters of trade.)

Boris Johnson, is not the Mayor of London any more…..

UK Parliament

https://www.parliament.uk/site-information/glossary/prime-minister/

There is no running away from responsibly of government bestowed by the people

Yet with an unassailable parliamentary majority Johnson has distorted/destroyed his government creditability.

Historian could well look back on Johnson with incredulity.

A Prime Minster that had all the tools to exercise power/authority.

But ended/descended a Punchinello

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Cleo, not just scotch and Irish, there are some cracking good English whisky these days not to mention Penderyn (and it’s best not to mention Penderyn!). Oh and in case you forgot we also have some really good cheeses! (Blue Vinny is a favourite of mine).

Actually the UK has been a friend of Japan for a long time, today we are one of only 2 countries with a capability of force projection globally, a major advanced economy and a rights and property friendly legal system that has protected the individual and trade for centuries and still does. As mentioned above a similar outward looking trade orientated island mentality and a lot of overlapping mutual global concerns, so what can Britain offer Japan? A lot.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Sorry, not going to let the go, Johnson has an education dedicated to a historic afforded entitlement.

Yet contributes to where we are today.

Japan government is dragged into Johnsons political merry go round.

"It is not true that a visit by British Prime Minister Johnson is being arranged," said Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno at a regular news conference in Tokyo.

I believe I could be a more pragmatic Prime Minster then Johnson, only for my J lawyer, over lunch, to pipe out after how many Gin and Tonics?

lol

You forgot David Beckam's right foot. Or, even his left foot for that matter ;-)

I never mentioned whiskey. I shudda said Scotch,

Japan makes better Scotch Whisky than the UK does. Why would they want to import an inferior product?

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Non-corrosive yet tasty mustard.

In Japan they prefer wasabi.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The UK has absolutely nothing to offer Japan.

Cheese. Whisky. Cheese. Clotted cream. Cheese. Crumpets. Cheese

... Marmite, overcooked vegetables ... oh, and an overblown sense of its own self-importance on the world stage, rooted in colonial misadventures in previous century (centuries in the case of Blighty)

Totally different product for a different purpose, as usual an irrelevant comment.

Marmite, overcooked vegetables

I assume you don't like Marmite, and you clearly haven't moved your limited ideas on British cuisine on from the time of rationing!

GenHXZ:

I would imagine Boris Johnson would be very good at stacking shelves, although I can't imagine why you think he'd want to travel all the way here just to do that. I understand he has a first-class degree from Oxford in Classics, so he's very well qualified.

Best not to read the trash in the tabloids, he's actually a very popular leader, as I believe the British like their politicians with a very large dollop of comedy, and also charisma......

Best not to read the trash in the tabloids

The Financial Times here have been trashing Johnson for months. I believe The Times have too.

he's actually a very popular leader

Johnson has been behind in the polls here for some time. The public, many of them Conservative voters, have been outraged by his lockdown parties whilst people's parents died alone in hospital.

Only the Met Police commissioner is keeping Johnson in a job/ out of jail. Because it keeps her in one too.

What does Japan have to offer the UK?

I beg to differ IngvarJan. 31  08:21 pm JST

Japan makes better Scotch Whisky than the UK does. Why would they want to import an inferior product?

Japan cannot make Scotch. A whisky cannot be called Scotch unless it is entirely produced and bottled in Scotland

Japan makes better Scotch Whisky than the UK does.

A contradiction in terms.... Japan cannot make Scotch.

There are some very good Japanese whiskies, that I will entertain when good Scotch is not available. But it's Japanese whisky, not Scotch.

And I've never found a Japanese whisky with the deep smokey peaty taste of a good Bowmore.

What did he hope to accomplish? The UK has absolutely nothing to offer Japan.

Eh, the way Bojo's post-Brexit UK economy is going the Brits might have a couple of lightly used aircraft carriers to sell Japan in a couple of years.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

He knows he won't be a PM by then.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

What does Japan have to offer the UK?

Ask Honda.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

And Nissan, Toyota etc

Many Japanese companies in the UK with head offices in London.

Boris the clown cancels again.

He had to delay his call to Putin yesterday to say "sorry" for partying.

Can you imagine the disdain Putin has for him.

And even messes up the easiest of diplomatic trips, coming to Japan where they would laugh at his buffoonery.

Like a Monty python skit.
