Mr Kipling
Well done. You have much more important things to do.

so much for the club of seven.... no one turning up! fancy that!
TrevorPeace
It's not like he can actually do anything. The disaster relief and social support mechanisms are already in place. This is just another photo-op for him, when he's sliding down in the polls.

Countries are sending their 2,3 &4 tier representatives to this memorial. No respectable politician still worried about their future will be attending.
The LDP would have been better off keeping this memorial lowkey. The memorial may satisfy the oyajis by putting money in their cronies pockets, but internationally, it is an embarrassment.

No Biden
No Obama.
No Trudeau
Dropping like flies at this point how are Dentsu going to embezzle all the funds with no guests to account for.

Trudeau can’t really do anything but the optics would be bad if he was in Japan while a natural disaster was unfolding back home. It may sound odd but he caught a bit of a break here.
Jay
Yes, like making a mockery of Canadian democracy by introducing bogus emergency powers, attempting to silence legitimate media organizations who don't report in line the official narrative, and freezing bank accounts of law-abiding, tax paying citizens.

"Trudeau was to be the only leader of the Group of Seven industrialized nation to visit Japan for the state funeral."
No loss to Trudeau or Canada. Huge loss for Japan, which now has no G7 leaders coming multi-million dollar fiasco.
TokyoJoe: "how are Dentsu going to embezzle all the funds with no guests to account for."
They'll find a way. And they won't even try to hide it.

Can we downgrade the security and get some money back?
Wesley
To put things in perspective, the hurricane in Canada was one of the worst they have experienced with several houses being swept out to sea. I think one woman is still missing. Video footage show several Canadian houses submerged and being washed offshore.
I don't think he cancelled because he wanted to but because he had to.

“ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not travel to Japan as planned … “
Well, of course he won’t; Canada / the safety of our Canadian friends is 2000408000 times more important than a fake funeral.

So WhaT ?

Trudeau says the military will be helping in NS but with their newest vehicles sent to another country ( the ones they had been waiting 5 years for) I wonder if they will be asking the public to lend them some equipment.
I mean isn't that normal in Canada's military used jets a borrowed helicopters.

PM Abe put Japan into economic disaster…who owes him the visit really ?
englisc aspyrgend
There is no way any politician answerable to their electorate could be seen to be jetting off to another country just for a funeral while their own people are suffering an unprecedented natural disaster and people are losing their homes and lives.
No doubt the Canadian Ambassador will be tasked with representing them, that’s what they’re there for.
shogun36
Oh Canada! Our home and native land!!!
(I’m not even Canadian, but this new amuses me.)
shogun36
Make that 4,299 people total and 699 people from 217 countries.
Kobe White Bar Owner
Wasn't that the excuse to have a state funeral cos of all the Important foreign dignitaries?
Down with this waste of money. LPD &the Moonies go Dutch I say!
Chabbawanga
Way more important things to do. Like annihilate the Canadian economy.
WA4TKG
Biden, Obama and Trudeau? Like someone said, no great loss
Makukun
Annihilate the Canadian economy? What the heck are you smoking?
juminRhee
Now imagine if the Japanese or Canadian prime ministers or emperor/governor-general decided not to attend the funerals of the Queen or of the US president. Well, Canada and other G7, see how Japan ignores your leaders when their funerals come up. It's just not a priority.
BigP
Doesn’t the truth hurt!
therougou
Already this one day funeral costs more than the Queen's multi-day event, and nobody important is even coming!
Legrande
You know the LDP higher ups couldn't care less the budget has already been confirmed so the money's in the bank.
Alan Harrison
I'm sure that a representative from the Canadian Embassy will be able to attend on his behalf. What's the problem?
theFu
Actually, he can. He can break down any barriers to aid flowing into Newfoundland. If there are any barriers and he isn't there, it would be bad.
BTW, Abe isn't a sitting govt official. He's retired. This is about friends coming. If Trudeau were in the region already, that would be different. Perhaps it is a cultural difference.
Didn't he die 2+ months ago? Over 2 months ago - 8th of July. Today is Sept 25th! Seems the body should be corpsified by now. When someone dies, aren't they buried within a week?
proxy
No loss. He is out doing photo ops this morning and blocking volunteers from cleaning up.
Stephen Chin
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister, Canada.
Your presence in Canada during Hurricane Fiona is not more important than your presence in Japan during the funereal of her former prime minister Mr Abe to which you had been invited. Your absence in Tokio is 'visible' to the world.
deanzaZZR
4,300 people? There must be some nice accommodations and meals on offer. After part at Yasukuni? :-)
Brian Adams-Reed
Let’s face it. Justin has his hands full with the socialist mess he’s made in Canada. I’ve heard that Canadians don’t take him too seriously. He’s basically a good looking school teacher with no idea how to run a country. His Dad was PM. That’s all he’s really got. And now there’s a storm, so he needs to attend to that.
GBR48
@juminRhee.
quote: Now imagine if the Japanese or Canadian prime ministers or emperor/governor-general decided not to attend the funerals of the Queen or of the US president.
Politics 101: It is seen as bad form to go abroad when there is a natural disaster at home.
Incidentally, according to the JT, Kishida didn't attend the funeral of the Queen. Trudeau did, but blotted his copybook with a karaoke session. A natural disaster is a good photo opportunity for him, even though politicians and their entourage just get in the way of the emergency services. Plus they can keep a closer eye on him so he doesn't mess up again.
I wish Truss would go. Give us a few days off.
Strangerland
That's just stupid.
Can anyone show one single world leader that criticized Trudeau for this?
Talk about a bunch of political hacks speaking up in this thread, as if the world cares about their anti-Trudeau extremism.
JTC
The correct thing to do.
