Referring to Japan's invasion of China last century, Wang said, “Our hope is that Japan will learn history’s lessons, focus on regional peace and stability, proceed with caution, not pull others’ chestnuts out of the fire and not be led astray by advantaging oneself at the expense of one’s neighbor."

And stop being the lapdog of the western interventionism in Asia-Pacific..

Its good that the US, Japan, India, and Australia are joining forces to make China play nice.

27 ( +39 / -12 )

why is a cop holding a wakizashi when dealing with a dog? Anyone know?

14 ( +21 / -7 )

@alyrustom Maybe it's a running dog of capitalism?

-6 ( +8 / -14 )

US, Japan, India, and Australia

The wealthiest in each of those countries along with the wealthiest in China and elsewhere in the world have set things up so they can each benefit from China's form of state capitalism. There isn't a lot of 'nice' when predatory capitalists are competing with each other.

Jeeez if there is one thing the Chinese are really good at is whining! Oh and copying stuff and ignoring copyright and human rights and …. Oh dear there seems to be no end they’re good at everything!

18 ( +29 / -11 )

India is in no mood for all this imperialism and warmongering. I think India is more interested in BRICS or BRICSA. They've learnt first-hand, along with China, what happens when you're the victim of savage colonialists.

And stop being the lapdog of the western interventionism in Asia-Pacific..

People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Or at least it is a terrible look.

11 ( +17 / -6 )

China sees the Quad as an attempt to contain its economic growth and influence, while Biden has sought to build ties with other democracies to confront the rise of an authoritarian global power.

I choked on my coffee when I got to this part

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

Not the biggest fan of china but technically they have never invaded another country. Unlike Russia. Maybe they're just playing the long game or just smarter.

-23 ( +6 / -29 )

That looks like me over by the baggage claim at Narita when I rock up to Japan wearing my smoking jacket.

What genus connected that pic with this story? The mind boggles…

21 ( +21 / -0 )

Countries like China that won’t contribute or participate in the New World Order agenda aka Great Reset aka 4th Industrial revolution aka Agenda 2030 aka One World Government will be economically isolated and destroyed.

-7 ( +9 / -16 )

In addition to removing all trash cans from public access, this is another of the “shows” of security Jgov likes to stage prior to world summits they host.

*- @KobeWhiteBarOwner 8:58am: “What connects that pic with this story?” -*

On topic with today’s show of security not just for dignitaries but all citizens, where are the increased security that was repeatedly promised after last years’ multiple knife & arson attacks?

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

Since Japan constantly begins political speeches and international appeals with, "As the only nation to suffer nuclear attacks..." -- even at summits on nuclear weapons where Japan refuses to ratify a ban on them -- why is it they don't take the high road on issues like this one and say, "As a nation that has attacked, occupied, and killed tens of millions across Asia, we know firsthand how bad that is and how wrong, and that it should never be done..."? No? I mean, while no fan of China, they are certainly right in pointing out that it was Japan that occupied them but is now crying around the world about its concerns China might expand its territory.

-10 ( +12 / -22 )

they are contributing and participating now… they are all just playing their part.

Nothing can come about without fear

I don't know if Chinese police do this, but part of the training for KGB and GRU field officers was for each new trainee to get in a ring in a small stadium with the other students and teachers watching and fight a guard dog with a knife, normally killing the dog in the process. The student wore a pad on one arm for the dog to bite. Both the GRU and KGB used cruel training methods.

People who wholeheartedly believe in accelerationism are the most irresponsible revolutionaries and deconstructionists. They are eager to change the status quo, but they have not thought about what kind of path to choose after changing the status quo.

India has nothing to worry about from colonists any more, but has a great deal to worry about with an assertive nuclear armed China on its border nibbling away at Indian territory like ants at a picnic. That is why they joined the Quad. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

16 ( +19 / -3 )

China, like Russia, is not to be trusted.

22 ( +26 / -4 )

If China is unhappy about a meeting, it is probably a good thing for the region and world.

Jeeez if there is one thing the Chinese are really good at is whining! Oh and copying stuff and ignoring copyright and human rights and …. Oh dear there seems to be no end they’re good at everything!

Don't forget Zero-COVID, which is working without any issues at all. /s

If China wants all this to go away, there's a simple solution. Become a direct vote democracy and have laws with teeth to protect anyone who reports graft and abuse of power. All representatives should be selected and voted in by the people, not a committee of 200K scratching each other's backs.

The govt is supposed to work for the people, not the other way around.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

China is upset. Good

One would hope China has also learned from it's neighbors past, to avoid repeating that behavior. On the surface it looks like it has learned nothing.

Not the biggest fan of china but technically they have never invaded another country.

Well except for the invasion and occupation of Tibet. The incursion into Vietnam and the desire to one day invade Taiwan. Not to mention China instigated border clashes with USSR, India and others.

So technically, in the past 100 years alone, they are guilty of invasion and occupation.

16 ( +20 / -4 )

China has done nothing wrong. Australia’s is in a different hemisphere, US on the other side of the world/pond and India is somewhere over there. Japan should not get involved in their provocations.

@ Kobe

What genus connected that pic with this story? The mind boggles…

Because China is the largest consumer? Some terrorist might attack in ninja style? Kyodo news thinks it a cool pic and JT thinks its super cool. Maybe its representing two countries. At the end question remains...

I have read accounts of this but has it been verified?

The Chinese and Koreans have been known for less than familial relationships with dogs.

American police of course have a big problem with murdering people's dogs when approaching residences.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

So China hasn't invaded anyone in a long time. Well, it's because they weren't able to.

Don't conflate unwillingness to invade with the inability to invade.

Now that China has the second largest military on Earth AND has increased in 15% in two years AND throw in the fact that China didn't 'invade' Tibet, Mongolia, Hong Kong and didn't have regional skirmishes with India. Combined that with a pretty aggressive stance towards the Indo-Pacific and you have a global need to make sure that China doesn't try to unilaterally 'enforce' its 'vision of a greater China' (see the South China Sea). Just ask the Philippines.

Oh and let's not forget that China DID try to invade Japan at least twice and they lost both times. In terms of 'containment', let's also talk about China's overfishing of pretty much everyway they claim as 'theirs'.

20 ( +21 / -1 )

The photo of a Japanese weilding a katana which is originally from China and a saber not a sword, shows clearly the incompetence of not pointing the sharp point at the dog whilst allowing it to chew your arm off.

For Japan to complain about China wanting to united one China and expanding territory is purely hypocritical.

Lets not forget Japan invaded China and Korea and much of Asia lethaly and that Taiwan was well on its way to being the Republic of Formosa until Japan stopped that and colonized them for 5 decades.

Furthermore the ROC /Republic of China and the PRC /people's Republic of China both claim to be the official government of all of China and are at civil war. A peace agreement or armistice was never signed.

Iam not defending China but Japan and the USA are certainly barking up the wrong tree.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

Usually anything that gets China angry and bent out of shape is good for the rest of the world. Whether the QUAD continues as it is, or evolves further depends entirely on how China develops. Nothing is static.

The photo of a Japanese weilding a katana which is originally from China and a saber not a sword,

The Katana or Nihon-to is not originally from China. What came from China and Korea was the Choku-to, the straight double edged sword. That evolved into the curved Katana form starting around 800 AD. The "Katana" is uniquely Japanese.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

That's a great photo.

India a democracy?! You got to be kidding.. just ask India's Muslims.

-11 ( +4 / -15 )

Why can't we just try to live in peace and harmony? Why does it have to be, if not a war zone, a zone for war?

Give it a rest!

India a democracy?! You got to be kidding.. just ask India's Muslims.

A flawed democracy but a democracy nonetheless. Modi got voted overwhelmingly to power twice because the Hindus outnumber the Muslims 5 to 1, and the liberal Hindus in India have no one to vote for. That still means that those voting for Modi outnumber those voting against Modi, and the discredited opposition have themselves to blame for putting Modi in power.

Sorry but that's not a sword your referring to its a saber.

And we all know it originated from China -just like i said "originated"

Think what you like but however the katana wasn't always curved.

Twist the words and try to bend the truth but ultimately the proof is in the pudding.

It's not a sword !

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

No Japan didnt uniquely be the only country to make a curved saber -thats gloriously pompous.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

It's a sabre not a saber.

The spelling of "sabre" hails from the Old World and remains the European spelling. Early field manuals and writings from the 19th century in the U.S. also used the "Army Sabre" spelling. By the turn of the 20th century, U.S. manuals began to use the spelling of "saber".

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Maybe China needs to ponder as to why there's a Quad to begin with. Self-reflection would be a good idea.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Europe has Russia and Asia has China.

Stay on your tippy-toes and be on guard with these two bullies.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Oh and let's not forget that China DID try to invade Japan at least twice and they lost both times.

Sorry to have to inform you that wasn’t China.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

The QUAD exists because of a shared threat, specifically China. And the Indo-Pacific does not have a security arrangement as Europe does with NATO. While today the QUAD is not a security alliance like NATO, it is obvious that if China continues it's expansionist behavior the QUAD will evolve to meet that challenge.

As for these off topic comments;

The Japanese Katana did not originate on the Asian continent. The straight sword came to Japan and evolved into the Katana around 800AD. The development of the Nihon-to is extensively researched and documented both inside and outside of Japan. Anyone who doubts this fact can look it up.

China, which was the Yuan Dynasty at the time under the control of the Mongol Khan sent flotillas of ships loaded with Mongolian, Han Chinese and Korean troops to invade Japan. They failed twice. in 1274 and 1281.

Except that China claims the Senkaku Islands as part of its territory, when in fact they are islands of Japanese sovereignty, internationally recognized by international treaty (UN).

If China invades those islands, it will be invading Japanese territory.

One question for that scenario - who is really provoking an escalation of war?

China as invader or Japan as invaded, in an unprovoked situation.

Typical sabre rattling from the rogue state of the USA and their puppets.

Not the biggest fan of china but technically they have never invaded another country. Unlike Russia. Maybe they're just playing the long game or just smarter.

As well as the examples pointed out above, let’s not forget most of what is now called China originally belonged to someone else until they were conquered and absorbed.

China’s hypocrisy in its statements , whines and general behaviour is all too well known so this is hardly new. The suggestion they look in the mirror is all too pertinent as what they are complaining about is directly a response to their own aggressive, imperialist, expansionist actions

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This is unacceptable. Totally irresponsible and unacceptable and unfair to China.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Bottomline is that China grows more and more powerful, and some countries don't like it. Incidentally, the countries most worried about China, are the ones that have been humiliating and exploiting it for decades.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

China will cry over spoil milk, the milk they left out to get spoiled and blame someone else for it. XIhina don't want to be a good neighbor his idea is to conquer everything near his border and expand them as far as he can go. China doesn't believe in borders if you don't stop them they will be in your bed!! They invent nothing but steal, and claim everything. If Xihina is not stopped he will only try to do what PRutin is doing and that is expand his territory.

Yes, that’s right. There is also the Japanese Korean Army. And so it was Korea, which was at the time under the control of the Japanese, that invaded China in 1937.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I have read accounts of this but has it been verified?

Oh yes. There have been enough GRU/KGB/FSB/SVR-RF defectors to the US that their training is well known. I have even met a couple of them over the years and that Soviet MiG-25 pilot who defected with his airplane to Hokkaido, Victor Belenko. The KGB fellow was pretty high ranking and very charismatic, a seemingly natural leader. Belenko went through a long period of self doubt after defecting before making his peace with his decision, and his impressions of our military and of our pilots was fascinating. He had a very high opinion of our forces, especially how we trusted mid grade enlisted soldiers and sailors to do jobs only officers could do in the Soviet military. Their conscripts were barely trained, had lousy moral and back then fully 1/3 of the Red Army spoke languages other than Russian. In western militaries career enlisted troops know their jobs, take the initiative and make things happen. In the Russian military and officer has to give specific detailed instructions to be followed, and anything technical including equipment repairs is handled by officers. The former KGB officer had no apparent self doubts and was adamant that the US was the last best hope for the world. I still get emotional when I remember him standing before us telling us that. What I find interesting is that he has this quality about him that if there had been a war I would have followed him through the gates of hell. You could tell he knew how to lead and had good judgement. I'll bet he was one heck of a spy!

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Perhaps Japan was pressured by the Quad to say what it said to China.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@OssanAmerica if China continues it's expansionist behavior the QUAD will evolve to meet that challenge.

When you say expansionist behaviour, what do you actually mean? China has a fast growing economy, as Japan had from 1964 to 1990, China like many countries spends money on defence. But China has not invaded any country outside it's borders. (Unlike Russia). China does have the right to grow and progress as any country does.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

But China has not invaded any country outside it's borders. (Unlike Russia). China does have the right to grow and progress as any country does.

China invaded and conquered Tibet, which was an independent nation prior to the CCP coming to power in China. China tried invading Vietnam in 1979 but was handed their backside in combat and was forced to retreat. China later took a number of South China Sea islands from Vietnam, and more recently took islands from the Philippines. If you look historically China has invaded Japan several centuries ago and Korea several times. Various Chinese dynasties have invaded areas that are now Vietnam, Cambodia, Tibet, Siberia, and then lost these territories in subsequent wars where China's borders were pushed back. China did not control Xinjiang until after the 1949 revolution. That territory was traditionally a separate kingdom and went back and fourth between local, Chinese, and Russian control. For now China controls it but if history is a guild that is probably not a permanent situation. China has been split between more than one kingdom at times, each warring against the other. To say China has never invaded a neighbor is simply not true.
