When did Japan criticize Aussie? Japan never invaded Australia. How could Aussie liberate Australia from Japan when you are the invader yourself?

I don't think anybody anywhere ever claimned Japan was cricising Australia. China is criticising Australia for dealing with Japan which everyone on this forum finds ridiculous. I am merely protesting against your racist idea that white Australians are not "natives" of a nation they are born, and have lived their entire lives in, as well as their parents' entire lives. And nobody said Australia liberated Australia from Japan, they helped liberate Asian nations such as Indonesia (and later helped Indonesias war of Indepence against Dutch colonialism.) Australia was subject to a few bombings during World War II though. I don't think we really disagree on the main point though, but you are seriously jumping at ghosts....

just like modern Japanese inhabiting Hokkaido are natives of Hokkaido

They came from Brits who are occupying Australia not liberating.

Yes, in the 18th and 19th centuries. By the time of World War II and today the European descended Australians were as native as the Aboriginals (I am aware of the heinous things done to the Aboriginals at the time though, not defending that) - just like modern Japanese inhabiting Hokkaido are natives of Hokkaido and not "occupiers" though that island was forcibly taken form the Ainu during the Meiji Restoration.

Australia....? What are you even asking?

China loves to meddle with everybody else's business except for their own.

roughneckFeb. 19, 2016 - 10:22AM JST @OssanAmerica: Don't trust everything you read on book. And 1968 is long time back. In politics, you make allies with >your enemy's enemy for short term goals.

No book my friend. I remember in the late 1960s. China's plan to dominate Asia and overtake the United States is no "short term goal:. Its been in effect for decades now.

Australia fought to liberate countries under Japanese occupation.

Where did the Australians come from?

Wang just sealed the deal for Japan. Top effort mate. Diplomacy 101.

Geography lesson - Sydney is not the capital!

Canberra decides which bid to go with not Sydney.

At the end of the day we'll choose the best tender, Don't care much for what China says... We are a sovereign nation too :)

China cautions Australia over defense cooperation with Japan

Heh. The real nitty-gritty is that china is sweating another formidable foe out there on the Pacific. The Aussie fleet will always be cooperating the US 5th & 7th fleets. Japan's Navy too. This justs ups the ante.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Well it seems the Aussie government is out to back both horses. Get all cozy with Abe, while trying to minimise loss of Chinese business simultaneously

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Australian government mines uranium, iron one and coal for freetrade with china. They are still fighting to turn great barrier reef into coal port and dumping ground for coal waste. But many people protested and took them to high court to protect some endangered species in the area. The previous primeminister Tony Abbott, was furious. This is what the government does for China. Also Chinese investors own most of own apartment buildings. And the get to lease a port in Darwin. What is wrong China , why can't you share a little trade? You get all our raw minerals is that not enough and make it impossible for young Australians to afford to buy a home. You arrest all your freethinkers and students who disagree with your policies in your country. You are pigheaded.

Japan didn't invade, kill 15 million Australians - and then deny they did anything wrong. I think that might explain Australia's ability to move on a little.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

She added, “In terms of the historical context, Australia has moved on Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters Australia should consider the context of Japan’s role in the Second World War in developing its military relationship with Tokyo*

The Japanese bombed Broome, and Darwin, and attacked Sydney, but Australia has moved on in the past 70 years. Maybe China should consider doing so too.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I loved how Bishop said it. Australia has moved on. China should too. Let's have China join the world in the 21st Century and not be stuck in the past.

Btw, what ever the case, China should not go and mettle in another sovereign states affairs.

roughneckFeb. 18, 2016 - 10:41AM JST As I can see, Russia and China will always be friend. That's a very large tie to break.

You really should study some history before reaching such conclusions. The USSR discovered in 1968 that China could not be trusted. They've never fully trusted them since. That's why China has cultivated and deceived the United States for decades.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

@GW. Completely agree with your second sentence. China still gets to go on about ww2, because Japan has allowed them room to do so

China cautions Australia over defense cooperation with Japan

I don't take this at face value. I think China in fact wants Australia cooperates with Japan. I hope Japan won't get this deal.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

Way to go China acting like a twit again I see!!!

That said if Japan had dealt with its history better decades ago China wouldn't even bring up this lame attempt!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Tension between Asia’s two largest economies has risen over what China sees as Japan’s failure to properly atone for its wartime past,

Not only China, but anyone with sense. Personally I prefer that Germany or France get the bid. At least the submarines would be constructed IN Australia

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Australia has coal. China wants to go green. Japan wants to burn more coal. Move along people, nothing to see here.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

China should know why Australia needs to enhance its navy to begin with.

China is increasing its military budget exponentially, and no one knows for what.

China does not hide its territorial ambition in Splatory and Paracel islands.

China acquired an air craft carrier and building another. China does not need an air craft carrier for defensive purposes due to its continental geography. Chinese air craft carriers are solely for offensive purposes.

Chinese admirals told their US counterpart that the western half of the Pacific belongs to China whereas the US may keep the eastern half. "The Pacific is large enough to accommodate China and the US." Australia belongs to the western half of the Pacific.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The chinese has a reason to be pissed off as the largest trade partner of Australia. Basically Australia is using their money to pay off the submarines. I'd very butt hurt too

0 ( +3 / -3 )

It's 2016, not 1945. Remember the tragedy, but move on.

Mr. Wang, why do you think Japan and Australia plan to cooperate anyway?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Sounds like Wang put his foot in his mouth and gave the diplomatic advantage to Japan. The only question is how long will it be before a Japanese politician says something equally idiotic that gives up the moral high ground. I'm guessing the answer will be measured in days, not weeks or months.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

China is eager to see its neighbors weak so one day they can seize the resources of the area without opposition.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Just because they make Australia's souvenirs they think it gives them rights to vote. LOL

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

"Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters Australia should consider the context of Japan’s role in the Second World War in developing its military relationship with Tokyo."

Not sure bringing up the topic of countries history/wars is very pertinent when you're from China. Bottom line is in 2016 Japan isn't seen as a direct/imminent threat to world peace, China a little bit more perhaps.

Something like "considering the strong economic ties between our 2 countries, we hope Oz etc" would imo have achieved more. The Chinese are spending big bucks in Oz from real estate to tourism, agriculture etc and Bishop and co certainly do not want to upset them. Counterproductive to bring old war issues as countries never want to lose face or look like they have been told what to do. Sovereignty still means something in today's world (well sort of!)

0 ( +4 / -4 )

As I can see, Russia and China will always be friend. That's a very large tie to break. As long as they are together, no other coalition can hurt them. Unless their import/export is blocked, they will thrive, and so will North Korea. The EU already has the refugee problem, so they can not focus much in Asia. There is no easy way to stop the aggression of China in South East Asia now.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Now I know Im going to be accused of conspiracy paranoia here, but did anyone else notice that at the same time there were suspicious JR line arson attacks etc that had rarely happened before, Japan was in hot competition with the Chinese for the Indonesian express rail deal? I can see the connection between the numerous train line incidents and that lucrative Indonesian rail competition.

China urged Australia on Wednesday to take into account the feelings of Asian countries

Good ol' China. Always looking to protect the li'l guy from expansionist giant Australia. You can't make this stuff up!

*unless you're china*
11 ( +14 / -3 )

"Moved on". Good one, Bishop. Deserving of a Nobel peace prize.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

China see where they are - Soviet prioritized arms, Japan economy. Sound economy first then militarization to protect not attack

0 ( +4 / -4 )

A very ill-advised comment because if he knows Aussies like I do then a comment like that would only encourage them even more to do the sub deal with the Japanese.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Australia fought to liberate countries under Japanese occupation. Where were the Chinese Socialists? That's right, leaving the Nationalists to take the brunt of the fight against the IJA.

10 ( +16 / -6 )

China stull continues to harp on Japan's role in WWII 70 years ago while they start putting missile batteries on the Sea islands. They ones that just a month ago they were swearing they had no intention of "militarizing". China is the Nazi Germany of the 21st century.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

WWII is OVER 70 years NOW. Get over it.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters Australia should consider the context of Japan’s role in the Second World War in developing its military relationship with Tokyo.

It was 70 years ago... Move on, nearly everyone else in the world has.

11 ( +16 / -5 )

China should mind its own business and stop trying to intimidate its neighbors.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

While at the same time installing missiles on their "island."

Moreover, China must be destroyed.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Oh YEAH; "Take into Consideration of Neighbors"...while you do "Island Hopping" of yourself, saaaay, planting MISSLE Batteries on them, RIGHT.

14 ( +17 / -3 )

Sure China. We'll lay em down when you do...
