"We think Japan should honestly explain its true intentions to the international community," she told a regular press briefing.

When someone uses "honestly" and "true intentions" they've usually already made up their mind what they believe to be true. China wants to make Japan look like the bad guy so they can continue their expansive behavior in the region.

is this expansion of the budget legal under article 9? or do we just ignore the constitution and threaten neighbours and compete in a regional arms race.

China playing innocent

Chna's defense budget is USD 161,700,000,000. Whereas Japan's defense is USD 43,800,000,000.

Yes China is really worried. They never fail to make themselves look like hypocritical fools on the world stage.

who is threatening who? You have it backwards. Japan was fine until China started its aggression. Japan would not need such a budget otherwise. (and has not needed it for 70 years, lest you all forget how peaceful Japan has been). China is a bully and a war-monger so they cannot complain when countries prepare themselves against such an arrogant bully. I have said it before, if China thought they could get away with it, without too much resistance, they would start a war that would make WW2 look like a bar fight.

Just a user, not just that but they are the ones helping North Korea and have absolutely no problems with the North firing their missiles above Japan nor threatening of "imminent destruction".

None of China's business what another country spends on something. Sorted.

Says China who increased their military spending by 7% for just this year. All this extra defense spending Japan needs to counter the Commie could have been spent on R&D, healthcare, infrastructure, etc. so China is actively hurting all citizens of Japan. They are an enemy

Yep.

May the Good Lord protect us from the Commie, the Ruskie and the Hun.

Wake up, Grandad! It's 2017!

japan's existence as a pacifist country is coming to an end, and will only be a small blip in its long history as an armed, saber rattling warmonger.

Japan needs to counter the Commie

What "commie"? Whatever else China may or may not be; it's certainly not communist.

Another one who has it backwards. Ok let me explain it to you so you can understand. To have weapons and a military does not make you a war monger (if it does then every other nation on the planet is one). However, when some idiot country like China or NK becomes a huge threat, ITS IS JAPANS RIGHT to have a defence - if those two countries were peaceful then Japan would never be forced up this street (one of defense on parr with everyone else). Do you get it now? No you probably don't but there you go.

Given the bad behaviors in the past, Japan must obey international laws and restrain in military activities.

abey: Given the bad behaviors in the past, Japan must obey international laws and restrain in military activities.

Japan has been nothing but peaceful for 70 years and do obey the law and is no threat to any other peaceful nation, the last 70 years is evidence enough for this. There is no mistake who the trouble maker is here. Given chinas behavior NOW Japan is merely responding as anyone would to a country that are are hell bent on starting a war.

China's defense expenditures are expanding much faster and over a longer period than many other countries;

China concerned over Japan's possible rise in defense budget;

(China) urges Tokyo to well explain its "true intentions."

What is China's "true intentions" with their increasing defense expenditures and building the military bases in the South China Seas?  They've never adequately explained their "true intentions" to the international community.

China's attitude has always been, "What applies to thee,  DOES NOT APPLY TO ME."

Oh, the hypocrisy and doublespeak.

Said it before, saying it again

chinese logic can be summed up thus:

What's mine is mine, what's yours is mine.

It's ok when we do it, but not when you do it.

You own nothing, we own all.

We can copy anything we like, we don't recognise your intellectual property and we prefer for you to pay for all the R&D before we "Invent it"?

Now that the global business sector have funded us, we can expand our military so we can destroy you, but you should do nothing in response.

Our military spending can be as much as we like, your military spending should always be far far far less than ours.

We will start trouble when we feel like it, break the law if necessary but we will criticise you for taking steps to protect yourself.

You are not peaceful because you made war more than 70 years ago. We are peaceful (just as long as you ignore our military expansion, aggression, our new rules of the sea and anything else we feel like doing).

And finally, If we could get away with it, we would start a war that would make WW2 look like a pub fight (so we would prefer it if you didn't defend yourself).

Some awful generalising about China here from the usual suspects.

call it what you like, changes nothing.

"Some awful generalising about China here from the usual suspects." (Toasted Heretic)

And some awful Communist Party propaganda line from the usual Pro-China suspects here.  Are you implying China's military buildup and aggressive behavior is acceptable and justifiable, but Japan's defensive buildup in reaction to China and North Korea behavior is not?
