“The Chinese delegation… have this feeling that the speeches of Mr Abe and Mr Hagel are a provocative action against China,” Wang, dressed in full military uniform, said in an address to the forum.

Hey bros, I heard you like provocations. So I claimed your provocative speech about our provocative actions was a provocation.

Not surprised the Chinese Communist Party isn't happy about this. A stronger Japan (supported by a US who takes a hardline against China) is great for all the smaller countries the CPC wants to steal territory from.

22 ( +25 / -3 )

Just getting up in the morning is considered 'provocative' by the Chinese.

17 ( +19 / -2 )

Time to expand US air space onto Mr. Wang's pool and setup an oil rig. If he protests we'll call that a provocation.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

China “will never seek hegemony and foreign expansion”,

China means this according to its own revisionist perspective, which doesn't tally with the reality of the world as it is today. China doesn't see its current actions of land grabs and re-drawn maritime borders as expansionist because it says these belonged to China in ancient times.

China is delusional but it will start a war if not kept in check. The worst thing is for other nations to bury their heads in the sand. Once a war starts, any investments in China they were hoping to protect by appeasement will be gone in a flash anyway.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Boycott all trade with China!

13 ( +15 / -2 )

CCP full of BS as usual. The Red Bully doesn't like people even talking about standing up to their bullying.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

China has caused these issues by increasing her military spending year by year, thus upping the ante and throwing her weight around. Of course other nations in Asia need to react to this and keep China in check.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Actions are provocative. Surprise surprise, the U.S. Is more welcome at these forums (by members not named China) than at any time in recent memory. I wonder why????

10 ( +11 / -1 )

The venue was for asian security dialogue and the Chinese want it to be a Chinese Security Forum. When will China stop its greed to the highest level?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Maybe China is concerned about western influence in Asia and is just trying to resurrect "The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" with them in charge this time.lol

Actually, all this saber rattling doesn't nice well for the future. I'm glad to see Japan and the US standing together on this. Abe's comment was correct. Why would China be against the rule of law when talking about the recent encounters at sea?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

As I've said before, the PRC views its "peaceful rise" as its neighbors "peacefully" accepting their regional hegemony. and anyone who doesn't are provocateurs.

They are violators of international law by claiming air defence and territorial zones in international waters. Even if all their claims were legitimate, their actions defending them are illegal. If their claims have legitimacy, then they should take them to the International Court of Justice; by using bilateral "intimidation," they're undermining their own position.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

China is the expert on provocative actions and comments. If they say it, it must be so.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

It is better to be more direct,” he said.

OK. How about this: The world is deeply concerned that the Chinese government is militaristic and likely to trigger World War III, that is, the World versus China.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

So no one is totally right here and no one is totally wrong, the truth is every part only like to pick up the perspection what they want.

I find this type of comment to be disturbingly insidious. It seems like you are just trying to plant seeds of doubt in people who might be undecided on this issue by pretending to be even handed.

Creating doubt about this issue is just as much a victory for China as convincing people that their claims are valid. Watch out for this.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

About midway into his prepared speech in which he said China “will never seek hegemony and foreign expansion”, Wang diverted from the script.

How can you tell a Communist is lying? His mouth is moving.

They claim they don't have imperialistic dreams because they actually believe that everything they see is theirs.

A while back my wife and I bought a DVD for a niece of ours, the DVD was called The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. It was about how Elmo saved Grouchland from Huxley (Mandy Patinkin).

Huxley was feared by all because he was bigger and ruthless. Every so often he would go out and take everything he wanted because he believed it was his. Everything he touched he claimed as his own.

Communist China reminds me of that Character because they act the same way as the character did. They touch it and claim it is theirs.

In the minds of the leaders of Communist China, they believe that every thing they can touch on a map belongs to them just because.

But, what those leaders just don't get is that when folks are bullied enough times they will band together and take back what is theirs.

Communist China is the greatest threat to world peace because they think everyone else should kowtow before them.

They will reap what they have been sowing and when that days does come they will act as if they are victims.

mgglifeJun. 02, 2014 - 05:45PM JST The only reason I am here is I am sick of JP Govt's attitude about history and always stear away from responsibilities such as whale, and the WW2, guess what, during the ww2, when all the nations accused Japan for the occupation of North China, the Japan just said:"Japan can't accept the it, so Japan will quit from the UN", how shameles is that?

What the heck are you talking about? UN, WWII invasion of North China? You are all over the field there.

There was no UN during WWII, it was the League of Nations. Next, WWII was fought almost 70 years ago, yes I know it's hard to believe, but WWII ended a long time ago. Next, Communist China wasn't a nation during WWII. Next Communist China didn't join the League of Nations, the Republic of China did. Next......why continue, you are so wrapped up in your propaganda that you wouldn't listen to reason if reason was standing in front of you.

But, I understand why your upset, you're scared that Japan and the other nations Communist China is trying to bully will join together and force Communist China to start acting like a good neighbor.

Fear is the only thing that thugs and bullies understand and respect.

mgglifeJun. 02, 2014 - 12:22PM JST Japan is stupid. China is obvious a big nation, you can defeat China for one time, or maybe to times, can you always defeat China? and the important thing is, China is the neighbour, no one can change that. So why have to setup a great enemy? there is a saying : cooperation is better than competion.

It takes two to tango and right now Communist China is acting like a bully.

If a neighbor tries to take your lawn, sprinkler system, dirt, brinks and trees that doesn't make them a good neighbor, that makes them thieves.

That is exactly how Communist China is acting, a thief.

Communist China has claimed that 90% of the South China sea is theirs and they are using force to take it. That is more proof that Communist China isn't a good neighbor.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

China “will never seek hegemony and foreign expansion”

This has already time and time again to be proven to be a colossal lie. It is reinforced proof that anything that the PRC state machine says is worth nothing, and MUST be treated as such.

In no way can any country that picks fights with JUST ABOUT ANYBODY be taken seriously at any meeting such as this. Pro or anti-US, the world now sees that this does not make a difference with the PRC. You are still a valid target for their bullying and thuggery.

If you say "no" to a PRC directive (disguised as a so called request) you are deemed to be provocative. The PRC definition of "peace" is more equivalent to the dictionary definition of forced subjugation.

The US and Japan should support democratic movement in China....

Somebody please cease the CCP members daily doses of opium. Their delusions are not amusing anymore.

Abe had opened the Shangri-La Dialogue on Friday by urging countries to respect the rule of law

“This is simply unimaginable,” said Wang

...and the message is clear ;)

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Of course it's outrageous, unacceptable and provocative for anyone to suggest that China should respect international law when tackling territorial disputes. After all, the unelected Chinese dictatorship take no notice of their own laws at home, why can't they do the same abroad?

China should be free to seize any land or sea territory it likes without anyone else interfering in China's internal affairs. This is the peaceful growth the thieving Chinese dictators talk about.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Japan and Vietnam is going to stand up and fight back against China just like Ukraine is doing to Russia !

5 ( +7 / -2 )

mgglife,

China is the neighbour, no one can change that. So why have to setup a great enemy?

Well you see, the CHINESE people can change their government. They have done so before, I have no doubt they will do so again.

I only hope they do it before the evil, self-righteous Chinese government of today makes some even more catastrophic historical mistakes. (It would be so ironic if the Chinese government were to go down the same path as the defeated militaristic government of Japan, but it would also be an absolute tragedy for people all over the world.)

25 years since you-know-what on Wednesday...

China, man up like a real superpower!. At least have a gut to admit your actions and challenge your opponent like a man. Stop the cry wolf game playing the victim.. China is nothing more than a big fat kid using weight to crush others in the skool yard.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

It's sad to see how little force international law has, and how little respect certain world powers have for it. Law stops becoming effective the moment you stop upholding it, and that's exactly what China is doing.

You can see a similar pattern with Russia here as well. A big country with a big army with the first move advantage of intruding another country's territory and taking a "defensive" stance. They understand that their relatively weaker neighbours (and the rest of the world for that matter) are not going to risk going to war, so they can continue to keep claiming right of land, sea, air, resources, etc etc. Not to mention both China and Russia have veto rights to prevent UN from intervening. What a dysfunctional family UN has become despite all their efforts.

Lesson of the story here; world is run by greed, and history is bound to repeat itself. :(

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Compliance to current international law must be respected as civilized nations and people to make regions peacefully and safe, and use law and regulations to establish any problem regarding issues, cause if we applied those past history ,then to prove a point is opening all`th proof who first govern our nation and even scientist will involve so as archeologist so as carbon dating and indigenous people that even grave will be open. So think about civilization reality, Are we going to move backward or heading forward? Back ward is to waste and forward is progress. Think!

very wise conclusion by host nation Singapore.

Let's play "3...2...1...China denounces"! It's a fairly simple game: somebody does or says something and we count down until China denounces it. The shorter the time, the higher the score.

About the so called international law upon the dispute territories, which is base on the distance. but Chinese keep claiming that they are base on history. Considering how far the Natuna Islands are away from the PRC, your argument is really terrible and invalid and only shown to be full of pro-PRC drivel with no logic involved, only the b!@# "aiguo wuzui" argument favored by the CCP and its foul ilk. This should be more than enough proof, combined with the copious amounts of other instances of PRC aggression of similar nature, for people to really take what is long overdue: a MUCH more harsher line on the repugnant PRC and its 1930s esque policy of territorial aggression.

Around China in 2030, there will be a open warning that China’s vaunted state capitalism model cannot sustain growth and usher China to the next level. There are already indications of problems in aging population, increase in crime, adding 18 million cars a year, dependence of foreign oil, excessive pollution, substantial increase in labor cost, housing cost, and disparaty between rich and poor. A faltering economy would pose an imminent threat to the CPC’s claim to its leading role, and there will be substantial reduction in military funds. It's just a matter of time.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Are there any English language sites that show the other side of the coin?

Maybe the South China Morning Post.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

well you know we cannot always trust media, who knows if there is a mistake by one or both side. As you know any media tries to make their people to believe: WE HAVE NO FAULT, NO MISTAKES...at least the Chinese Minister said in chinese CCTV: "China is big, of course its logically to claim areas and territories" ... So what does it mean here?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

It funny watching the supporters of the Chinese dictatorship try to defend China when matters have reached a level where the United States is now naming China in it's critical statements. Even funnier is the desperate efforts to keep banging at Japan. Americans over the age of 40 remember Red China, Communist China, and we still support Taiwan. Arguments that we may consider China to be a "partner" in trade rather than a cheap labor source are quite delusional. Japan is the most important US ally in Asia and ghome to the largest US military presence in the region. China is an adversary at best and an enemy at worst,

The truth is if we base on distance, Taiwan is more close to the disputes islets with China, and Falklands is more close to Argentina. So China, Japan and UK are more agressive?

To answer your question, first we need to define whether the disputed land is an island, or just simply rocks and reefs ?. The questions of heritage and the independent desire of the local residents must be taken into consideration here..

For an example of Falkland Islands: The imperial UK established the first English settlement on the main island in 1766. The population is now more than 3,000 primarily consists of native Falkland Islanders, mostly are British descendants, and naturally it is their right to be part of the English heritage. Falklands are now a self-governing British Overseas Territory... Similar to New Caledonia of France. I don't think NATO or the international community can do much for Crimea based on the locals Russian heritage and desire to be part of Russia...

You should quote some better examples....

Beside the names of South China sea or East China sea... Can China make such heritage claims for Paracels or Spratly reefs or even Senkaku Islands ?.

Perhaps India can claim the whole Indian ocean and all near by Islands if follow similar reasoning used by China.... Time to grow up China !....

On topic, who honestly didn't see this coming? Any countries can play China like fiddle but they have better things to do like keeping the economics afloat.

China super power in 10 years, tell them they are dreaming! You think United States and Japan and the rest of Asia stand still and let China passed them without making any effort to protect them. I am not sure which planet you are living on pal.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

In 10 years time China will be the imperialist of the world, and will become the most hated country without question whilst attempting to arrogantly reorganize the world to the CCP's own whims and sick fetishist fantasies like what Asian2014 has detailed out, which is reminiscent of a 1930s fascist era "pure" state. There will be no "grand expansion" for the CCP empire, as even normal ordinary Chinese would just be focusing on their own lives and then into consumerism like everyone else instead of going on "aiguo" induced wars of "patriotic fervor" about their joke "inalienable" claims to every inch of this Earth.

It makes me glad that I abandoned this rotting ship called the PRC.

China owns these Paracels ,Spratly reefs for the past 50 years, and the nations around admit this. Besides, China owned these places for more Thousand years, Can any other nations provide equality or more evidence?

What kind of evidences are you talking about ?. No one recognised China's wildly territorial claim !. I guess that why the Chinese regim is so angry and aggressive atm. All one can find are statements from China claiming ancient Chinese maritime time explorers travelled these seas... Based on such wildly claimed evidences, I guess china will soon claim Africa, South America and perhaps the whole Antarctica... Lol

If India can provide these conditions, I will say yes, India can claim the whole Indian ocean.

There is no evidence suggesting India is behaving immaturely likes China.. This is the 21st century, time to grow up, stop the world domination dream, follow the international laws and join the world community to live in peace.

since you dont know about those evidences, so no need to discuss with you any more.

But as a reminder, China's territorial claim is not start from 21st century. So I can say it is other nations want to claim what China has claimed before.

huh....huh.

Just keep steer the question and topic and keep defineing China and Chinese.

You can speak even more lauder and speak more words but nothing help to answer my question here : "Can the distance be the rule to judge the territories?"

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Both sides continue to think only the other side is the cause for all these problems. Sadly, China's actions are exstremly poor and Japan & the US reactions aren't helping either. Serendiputous: You say China is the cause of all this, by their increase of military spending, year after year. So now Japan's reaction is to do the same. Producing, selling and using more military equipment will only benefit the military industrial complex and everywhere that is happening, the general public looses out! Two wrongs don't make a right. There will be NO military solution to all these issues, only real depomacy has a chance to solve these problems. KevinPhilopBong: You say boycott China. That would definitely affect China's actions but neither Japan nor the US would do such a thing, they are too worried about their MONEY and the affect on the world markets.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Can the US beat China with our superior military might at this moment? The answer is absolutely beyond reasonable doubts. But here is a tricky catch, the US will also suffer huge damages; in addition, tremendous collateral damages will spill over into Japan’s and EU’s economy as well.

In a recent survey done by a reputable American think-tank: although the US and Japan are long-term allies, the views from their experts in the US and Japan are vastly different. In Japan, 71 percent of the experts believe America is Japan’s most important economic partner. However, only 7 percent of those in the United States considered Japan. Interesting enough, 46 percent of experts in the United States cited China as their country’s most important economic partner.

Japan may need to take a reality check.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

China and Japan have massive amounts of friction. Seems to me both sides could easily have start having a go at it, especially at sea, without realizing they both "started it".

My shoes says Made in China 6 out of 7 days in a week. But China needs to buy this one. That's lobbying, measuring, more lobbying, regulating and sweet talking.

Besides, Japan needs the money, and could use their tech-skills to make the coolest oil rigs ever.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

The US made it clear that Washington wants to leverage the IISS Asia Security Summit forum to reassure its long-term allies, in addition it wants to warn China to be off limit on American stakes in Asia.

Publicly, the US and China exchanged barbs with sharp words; that is mainly rhetoric. Privately, both sides are relatively restrained and carefully managing competition and ensuring hostility in check. In fact, the US just made a big effort, through different channels, to persuade Chinese corporates and government agencies to continue using and purchasing tech products from 8 American tech giants including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Oracle … after recent fallout ratcheted up by a cyberwarfare charge.

Here is the thing (for people who are calm enough to understand): the relation of US and China have been developed into an intertwined and odd positions through last two decades , they are not enemes by any definition, but competitors, and out of the blue moon, they work together as partners. For Whitehouse, strangely enough, China falls into “too-big-to-fail” category, if it’d sink and it may pull down the US with it.

So calm down and enjoy the shows. :)

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

The US and Japan can do what they like. They have been in cahoots since decades ago when China was the sick man of Asia. They wrote the rules and drew the lines in international seas. And you expect a stronger China now to continue to coddle to your rules? Give China another 10 years to be a truly super power. At the moment they are not strong enough yet. That's why the US and Japan continue to poke her. Try poking Putin!
