“The Diaoyu islands and affiliated islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times." Well, I really doubt Tibet and Uighur regions were China's inherent territory in ancient times and so why does China occupy them?

Just wondering why they call it the East China Sea and South China Sea.

Sea names don't denote ownership, they're just things to relate approximate location. The Atlantic isn't owned by Atlantis. The Indian Ocean isn't owned by India. You're going to have to do a lot better than "sea names" if you're going make a case for ownership. The truth is that China couldn't have cared less about the islands until the issue of undersea oil and fishing rights came up.

All this resolution is stating is that the U.S. is recognizing that Japan has been administering the islands up to now and the islands under the treaty between the U.S. and Japan. Nobody really cares who was controlling it hundreds of years ago. Tell you what, lets use the same logic and award all the lands controlled by the Mongol Empire in 1274 back to Mongolia. Oh, wait, that means China is now part of Mongolia. AWKward!

“The Diaoyu islands and affiliated islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times. China has indisputable sovereignty over them.”

I always find statements like this amusing. Which China do they mean? Are they referring to the Qing Dynasty, when Mongolia was also included in China.... but they were ruled by Manchu? Or are they referring to Warring States Era when there was no "China"? Or perhaps the "5 Dynasties and 10 kingdoms" period when "China" was non-existant and each kingdom was smaller than Japan?

Honestly, for a people who pride themselves on their history the current Chinese government seems to have conveniently forgotten 90% of their own history.

avigatorDec. 04, 2012 - 09:16PM JST Actually China's territories extended all the way to Lyu Kyu, (now Ryu Kyu), and Lyu Sung, (now Luzon). Just >wondering why they call it the East China Sea and South China Sea

Ryuku Kingdom was a "Tributary" of China as was most of Asia at one time or another. Which is not'the same as being "Chinese territory". As for Luzon, it was never even a Chinese tributary state.

Last week China was claiming Hawaii right in front of Clinton. Nice to see the US standing up to put an increasingly out of control PRC back in its place.

Nice to read some real arguments about ownership and history. Chinas government needs to learn that their bullying and childish arguments doesnt convince anyone, well except themselves. They also seem to be repeating the same argumentational flaw endlessly, - this is mine, therefore it is no one elses. Makes you wonder what they teach at Chinese universities.

Outta hereDec. 05, 2012 - 05:30AM JST It's amusing how people are reading this as US support for Japan's claim for the islands yet it specifically states the >US takes NO position on the actual sovereignty of the islands

What's amusing is that you can't comprehend that the U.S. has made it clear that if anyone (China) tries to take the islands by force, they will be engaging the United States. That effectivey destroys any hopes of China being able to take the islands by "bullying" Japan the way they have with the Phippines. China couldn't care less whether the U.S, recognized Japanese sovereignty or not, what matters is whether the PLA Navy can break the First Island Chain without confronting the US Navy. They CAN'T.

" China has indisputable sovereignty over them.”

Only in their mind.

Hong also said, “We hope the U.S. side will bare in mind the broader interests of peace and stability in the region,…

Yes, need more bare-ing in mind. Good job, Ed.

and the islands fall under the treaty between the U.S. and Japan.

It's amusing how people are reading this as US support for Japan's claim for the islands yet it specifically states the US takes NO position on the actual sovereignty of the islands and merely supports Japan's administration of the islands. So while they are saying Japan administers the islands just as the US administered them after WW2 they are not saying the islands belong to Japan

China havent noticed that the entire world knows that their cheap labor is the problem

China is just being childish. They are trying what ever they can to get those islands and they will take down anyone with them

@OUTTA HERE

I agree with you. The statement is a bit inconsistence What the US really saying is that Japan you can keep on doing the job of administrating the Island but we are not supporting you on the sovereignty issue.

China havent noticed that the entire world knows that their cheap labor is the problem

That's a laugh. Most developed economies have investments in China which are supported by their governments, including Japan which actually subsidizes off-shoring of jobs. So your issue with all of those lost jobs needs to be taken up with your government, not China or Vietnam or Thailand or Bangladesh or (soon) Myanmar (among others) who offer similar low-wage, low-tax, lax-restriction opportunities.

China's formal opposition means nothing. We all new it existed before it was stated. It is worth less than a token gesture.

America is face saving herself from humilations from China! Chinese government ships in and out freely without any price to pay is to ashame that US-Japan alliance that was o called backed by force! Chinese naval power has protected her government ships over the soverignity of Diayoutai islands! A fact for the world to recognize!

Gee China barking, but sadly for the PRC no one is listening.

The moment it goes off script will be the moment the powers that be will destroy it's new found wealth.

1890 all over again.
