Chinese regime is clearly buying time for its big hidden scheme. Case in point, right now, satellite image shows China is build a manmade island on Fiery Cross Reef, which is 3,000 plus meter long, increasingly look like a military plane runway. And that is not all, it has been reclaiming more lands in South China Sea than any claimants ever did.

This kind of behaviors are not types of peace-seeking initiatives thatChina's neighbors want to see let alone proactive and inflammatory.

which is in line with their economic rise. which is still a small fraction of the US defense budget.

That won't work until the word "dispute" is recognised. Currently the Japanese government refuses to even recognise their is one over the Senkaku / Diaoyu islands, so I can't see that one getting resolved

How about stop building an airstrip in Spratlys Island? Being respectful and mindful to others could be enough...

Scipantheist: Lol, my comment was NOT about comparing exact "equivalencies" Even the locals on the island don't want a military base because they know it's NOT mindful of the tensions between China & Japan. You are always going on about China military growth but don't see any problems with Japan doing the same. Please explain how adding more even military installations is helping tensions between these two countries.

I comment because I care about the well being of all citizens in both countries, while you continuously support the Military Idustrial Complex and governments that no longer work or listen to their citizens. I'm not supprised that you're unable to see an expanding military and arms race, won't be helpful for strained tensions between countries. No two countries (acting poorly), do it with the same "equivalency", poor actions and reactions are just that, it matters NOT, if one commits more than the other.

No matter what he said, some people can always find fault about it, however, I prefer to hear what he just said instead of Putin style sort of words.

Why not a hotline with Japan? Let me guess, China wants concessions before it will be responsible.

The diplomat's job is to talk. The only thing is that when PRC's diplomats are concerned it is that they only talk to stall and buy time to fortify their outposts and have no intention or power to remove the military out of the area.

Well now. If China is really doing this, I wouldn't be surprised if we replace our Secretary of Defense with a new Secretary of War. Watch out, Hagel. You've been too easy on China. You need to get out of the way so that we can have a "real" hawk in charge of our military assets.

Setting up a phone line in no way requires a speech from Japan. Like I said, you want concessions before even setting up a phone line.

While I agree that building an airstrip is NOT helpful towards the already stressed tensions, the same could be said about Japan presently building military installations on other islands. I fail to see how Japan building military installations on its own uncontested islands (unpopulated for the new installations even from what I remember), is equivalent to building right smack in the middle of contested territory. Also, China is threatened by Japan's strength? I wish it were so, but China clearly is flush with cash to waste on stealing territory these days. China and Japanese military growth should be equal, so Japan needs to ramp its up considerably.
