Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is a incorrigible gaffoholic.

Has my vote to "once again wantonly provoke and interfere in China's internal affairs on the Taiwan issue."  to his hearts content.

In fact I would happily volunteer to hold the bullhorn and lift the letterbox of the The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo so to provoke all "n" sundry inside.

"In such a scenario, Tokyo, Canberra and Washington must speak in one voice that they shall not tolerate any change in the status quo achieved through force," Aso said. Aso, currently vice president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said in a speech at an event hosted by the Australian Institute of International Affairs that China could seize the remote Taiwanese islands of Kinmen and Matsu, which are close to the mainland.

He famously said many seniors in Japan should hurry up and pass away but if there is anyone who is a net drag on Japanese society it is Taro Aso and anything associated with him.

Kinmen Island is already fully integrated into the greater Xiamen economy engaging in commerce and getting water, electricity and internet service from the Mainland. Some Kinmen residents are lobbying for a bridge to be built for easy access to and from bustling Xiamen.

Matsu Islands are next. It shows how out of touch these Nippon Kaigi oyajis are.

AUKUS becoming JAUKUS is a logical and sensible military alliance of four democracies in the region. It is not an outrageous thing to say that they should have free Taiwan's back in the event of an invasion from the Communists.

Keep Taiwan free and democratic.

Umm NO. China knows well that the world does not see Taiwan as Chinese territory, but as an independent Island nation that can decide for itself its own future without interference from the CCP. How many times do governments need to tell China that Taiwan determines Taiwan's future, not China? They tell them over and over but China refuses to listen.

Taiwan is an "external" issue to China, and is an international issue thanks to the important trade links many nations maintain with Taiwan.

China can rant all it likes, it can point to decades old signatures on papers and even governments warbling on about one China. One China and one Taiwan. That is the reality that has been in effect for over seven decades and continuing. Any attempt to invade Taiwan militarily by the CCP will begin a deadly war that will see many hundreds of thousands die, if not millions.

China needs to shut up and move on. Taiwan's people want nothing to do with China except to be tourists from time to time.

Aso also called for expanding AUKUS, a trilateral security partnership involving Australia, Britain and the United States, to include Japan, making it JAUKUS.

It is an alliance, and a security partnership. Japan could not be included until it alters article 9, so it can defend Australia and UK if they are attacked, as Australia and UK would defend Japan as an ally in any JAUKUS or AUKUSJ or AJUKUS or AUKJUS agreement. Alliances are for mutual defense not just in one direction only.

Japan would be welcomed with open arms if it was an open and full ally to all members.

Beijing regards the island as a renegade province to be brought under its control, by force if necessary.

It is the CCP that are the real renegades, breaking away from the legitimate government in a revolution, not the other way around.

The United States' One-China policy which was first stated in the Shanghai Communiqué of 1972 states that: "the United States acknowledges that Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China."

And how much of that is due to mainland coercion? Also the US statement is an acknowledgement of a position, not adopting it for the US.

Not only that, the US State Department regularly declares that the US does not support Taiwan independence.

That's the thing, though: it doesn't. The majority of Taiwanese don't even want to be called Chinese.

I have never in my life met anyone who believes that. Lip service does not count as real recognition. They all recognize Taiwan's right to self determination without coercion or involvement of the CCP. Thats is the real way they say Taiwan is not part of China without having to say it. It keeps China quiet.

Not only that, the US State Department regularly declares that the US does not support Taiwan independence.

It also regularly says it does not support CCP rule of Taiwan without Taiwan peoples permission. So which is really relevant? The fact the US would intervene in any Chinese invasion of Taiwan, or giving lip service that Taiwan is part of China? The same way the UK is part of Europe, yet still sovereign and separate.

Taiwan was basically taken by fleeing Nationalist Party refugees who lost the war over control of China; it never really was part of China, and certainly doesn't belong to it. Who would want to be governed by the party of Chairman Mao?
