This is not the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov. It is the Slava class cruiser, the Varyag. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Navy_100625-G-7265M-396_Russian_Sailors_man_the_rails_as_Russian_navy_missile-cruiser_Varyag_departs_San_Francisco_Bay.jpg

Be nice to see both the Chinese and Ruskys help out over in Somalia, catching pirates etc..and also by the Malacca, plenty of horrible pirates from Thailand, Indonesia etc...

Mr. messican, China Russia US the french are always in the Gulf of Aden catching pirates.

Always, if I'm not mistaken there are constantly 2 Russian, 4 US, 1 French and 3 Chinese warships escorting the civilian ships by rotation at all times.

So it is nice that they're all doing work.

But it would be nicer if Japan can send a few Kongo class there to help out as well. Or the Messicans who are not busy cooking cocaine and drugs to ship all over the US.

Why would you want the JMSDF to send a Kongo-class DDG when its primary missions are anti-air, ballistic missile defense, and anti-submarine? Kongo-class also only has a helo-deck and can't accommodate a helo onboard, which is kind of useless when conducting anti-piracy and VBSS ops. They wouldn't be any more useful to the multi-national anti-piracy efforts than the Murasame and Asagiri class general anti-surface destroyers (both with organic SH-60s) and the P3C Orions the JMSDF already continuously operating out of Djibouti...

USN, show of force. The Chinese brought out their big guided missile destroyers for a reason. So did the the French and the Russians. You can bring out one Kongo class and another Murasame class. But you gotta have a Kongo as a flagship. Unless Japan wants to send the Hyuga class, that would make a statement.

That's what the anti-pirate patrol is all about anyways, an opportunity for a show of force. Why bring out those 8000tons destroyers when a 3-4000 tons frigate or even corvettes equipped with helo will do the job. Its easy to resupply in the region so there is no need to large surface warship but everyone does it for a reason.

Like USNinJapan2 posted why in the hell would you want a Kongo class? Show of force, to who the pirates? They will be scared of any type of fast boats with guns.

The P3C probably hunts pirates far better then any war ship as so can a helicopter to a lesser extent. When you find pirates you don't need to blow them out of the waters with a large missile since 5" guns will do.

Probably Russian. Chinese officers will often have to have some proficiency in Russian since they still use a fair amount of Russian equipment. The reverse is not true.

I believe in pragmatism. Besides, while China brought out its best 052 destroyers on the first patrols, IIRC later they slimmed down to 054 frigates.

As for Japan, I believe she should take the pragmatic route. Forget even Murasames. Take one of those double-digit Escort Divisions (with the older and smaller ships) and perma-base them in the Persian Gulf instead of making destroyers rotate thousands of miles.

SB, Show of force to the Chinese and Russian of course. The pirates mean nothing in these escorts.

The 054 frigates are the ones China wants to showcase to all the Asean and S. American nations. Its a great opportunity to project your power. But hey, if Japan wants to stay home or stay pragmatic, do what you want. You know, there are lots of ships and transports from the middle east to Japan. Maybe its time to spend a little and send out your fleet to protect your own ships? Send out a light frigate or a corvette, whatevers, just do it already.

What are you talking about? The JMSDF are out there. Ships AND aircraft. They're doing enough already. Piracy IVO the Horn of Africa peaked by 2011. Notice how you haven't heard in the news about any more ships being taken by Somali pirates lately? Piracy has now shifted to Western Africa IVO the Gulf of Guinea off Nigeria and Cameroon where Japan does little trade and has very little concern.

Just a show of force with a little provocation thrown in. Russia and China speak the same language, mutual hatred of the West and Japan.
