What is China worried about? Those are anti-sub platforms, and unless China is sending a fleet of subs against Japan they should have nothing to worry about., but it's the perceptions that matter.

The building of artificial islands, the militarization of them, the ridiculous 9-dash line claim, the non-recognition and compliance of the ICA ruling are hardly "exaggerated", they are real and exposes China as a threat to peace and stability in the region. It is current Chinese militarism right now that the world is concerned about, not 70 year old past history. This harping on WWII is getting really old, and sounding more and more ridiculous in the face of China's present behavior.

China says it hopes new Japanese carrier doesn't mark return to militarism

Don't try to turn this around China. It's to protect ourselves against war mongers like YOU China

Japan should learn the lessons of history,

Japan has learned and have remained peaceful ever since WW2, minding their own business for over 70 years and never causing any trouble to anyone. China have not learned, are not peaceful and are a threat. Such hypocrites.

These ships were required due to China's rapidly increasing military threat and belligerent behaviour to all its neighbours. Seeing as it refuses to close down its friendliest ally NK, I'd even say a few more carriers may be required to ensure Japan's defense.

China doesn't seem to understand that if they calm down with their aggressive behaviour and loosen their oppression at home, they could seriously go on to become one of the greatest and most dominant countries in world history. That their Commie government refuses to give that opportunity to its own citizens, is extremely suspicious and even treasonous

China should listen to its own advice. You invade Japanese airspace and waters hundreds of times every single year, doing laps around Okinawa and Mainland Japan and they call it freedom of navigation. Japan has protested dozens of times which goes unnoticed on a deaf ear. You should become a pacifist country just like Japan! How about you give up nuclear weapons all together just like Japan! You spend three times as much as Japan on your military, building all kinds of offensive weapons including nuclear. Your the real danger to stability and peace in Asia! The country supporting North Korea and their aggressive behavior including shooting ballistic missiles towards Japan, 4 of them this past month alone... but Japan is the cause of concern?

When China withdraws from Tibet, stops threatening its neighbours and lets Taiwan declare formal independence I might think this statement okay. Until then it needs to be treated as the ridiculous statement it is. Japan has every right to defend itself.

Which country needs to "learn from history" ?

Learn from history and move on

Regardless of China's words, I also hope the new Japanese carrier doesn't mark return to militarism.

Since it is not a strike platform, platform you have nothing to worry about.

Let's see, which is the bigger threat: A helicopter carrier that will initially carry 7 anti-submarine and 2 search-and-rescue helicopters (28 total) - basically a defensive platform - or an aircraft carrier that carries 24 J-15 fighter jets plus other aircraft (36 total) - a basically offensive platform?

Honestly, I had expected much more hostile words from the Chinese. But I guess even their propaganda people couldn't come up with anything that wouldn't sound so obviously ludicrous, when presented with the hard facts.

Interestingly, the Kaga costs about 1 billion USD while the Liaoning costs about 9 billion USD, so in terms of cost-vs-capacity, the Kaga is cheaper.

The Dictionary defines militarism as: "the belief that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests".

Well, with the JSDF currently involved in massacring chickens i'm not sure that Japan is in anyway embarking on a new era of military interventionism. Mainly as it neither has the capability or, more importantly, the public enthusiasm for such things anymore. However, last time I had a look at the current situation it would appear that China was hell bent on embarking on rapid militarism in the area!

While Japan maybe increasing its military and investing in new hardware and technology it is hardly surprising considering that its surrounded by nations who have much larger and aggressive policies towards it, North Korea for example. Also its build up is at no where near the level where it could be considered an effective first strike offensive force. The introduction of these "carriers" is hardly threatening to anyone, They are primarily search and rescue ships with an anti submarine capability. The only ones who would be afraid of them would be the submarines sent to track them down.

Japan has become a new Japan while China has become Japan of old with the same imperial ambitions.

"“I also want to say that the Kaga was sunk by the U.S. military in World War Two. Japan should learn the lessons of history,” Hua told a daily news briefing."

At the launching ceremonies of the JS Izumo and the JS Kaga, US Navy officers were in attendance with the JMSDF. Which country needs to "learn from history" ?

"as an excuse to expand its military."

and what is Chion's excuse for its expanding forces and arming of artifical islands ?

That the military-building Chinese are worried about Japan's adding an extra anti-submarine aircraft carrier to its fleet is a joke. While the Chinese are busy building up their military they don't want anybody else to challenge them anywhere. So Japan ... and most probably a lot of other Asian countries ... had better be prepared to take on a strong Chinese military front.

@Hiro They are helicopter carriers! They do not have catapults or the size and necessary equipment to be an aircraft carrier! The Ryukyuans are part of Japan. They have been for hundreds of years! You are more of a burden then those people will ever be!

China might fight back with their own versions of Moritomo Gakuen?

They already have. Their school text books through out mainland China is filled with nationalist propaganda.

Hua Chunying Mar. 24, 2017 - 05:43PM JST Both the Izumo and the Kaga can be quickly converted into aircraft carriers. The name helicopter destroyer is a brilliant >stealthy deception just like the 'advance to Asia to free the people there from western colonization ' saga of the past.

And the current Chinese stealthy deception of military buildup and territorial expansion all while whining about 70 year old history, Too bad for China that the world isn't buying their nonsense.

However, Ryukyuans would wish Abe will build another 150,000 of these hybrid aircraft carriers so that all the colonizer >Amerikano giant air bases in Okinawa will be transferred to those ships! Such is the size of the burden suffocating the Ryukyuan nation !

Okinawa is a Japanese prefecture. And it is home to the largest U.S. military presence in Asia, You should worry about liberating Tibet and the Uighurs before commenting on other countries.

It must be because Taiwan is the prime symbol of the glaring victim of betrayal by America .

Basically Taiwan had their head too much deep in the sand to notice that they lost. If Taiwan had declared independence instead of pursuing their ill fated wet dreams of regaining power in mainland China back in the start of the 70's then they would have been an independent nation right now with acceptance around the world.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The problem of finding a reason based on one's wet dreams to explain the greatest treachery ever done by America to an ally like Taiwan is that Washington already suffered from premature surrendering of its democratic principles even before the first salvos were ever fired.

How can Taiwan declare independence at the time of the very sudden and shocking severance of diplomatic ties together with the loss of the military and nuclear shield even be feasible?

If one is to hide from the past by having a wet dream then waking up to todays reality doesn't even effect an iota of change in the perception that America was traitorous to Taiwan even then and now.

The clamor for independence is strong in todays Taiwan but America's suffocating tentacles in preventing it is even far more stronger than during the first act of betrayal back then in that day of infamy, January 1, 1979 when Uncle Sam also forced Japan to cut off diplomatic ties with Taiwan .

Today America even refuses to sell Taiwan the F-22 and F-35 new generation fighters. It also prohibits Japan from selling Taiwan a new version of the Soryu submarine.

Heck, America today even bars the freely elected president of Taiwan from visiting the WH, the Capitol, the UN and even from attending a CAVS vs DUBS NBA action! OMG!

How I wish PM Abe will have the guts to announce to the world that Japan will sell Taiwan the Izumo and the Kaga together with the Soryu soon.

Will the current occupant of the WH answer with a yes or no?

No wet dreams please!

OsamaAmerica:

Your forgetting to mention the worlds most Japan friendly nation on earth is appalling!

It must be because Taiwan is the prime symbol of the glaring victim of betrayal by America .

You know that day when USA abandoned Taiwan in favor of China is also a day of infamy !

I wish Abe will give the Kaga and Izumo to Taiwan as a gift to the Taiwanese as a sign of the warm friendship between the two nations.

I bet your America will immediately veto such a deal!

Japan should be wary of Uncle Sam.

If Washington could easily betray Taiwan then why not Japan?

In historical hindsight, there are better names to call a warship than 'Kaga'.

My comment was regarding the return to militarism, not about a worry whether a warship currently has strike capabilities or not. You do understand the meaning of 'militarism', right? It is something I hope any nation should be willfully trying avoid, China included.

The world with Trump is coming back to the old ways. Extremism and wars a re about to come back. China is right to worry but she is the main war problem too.

It is good for japan to try to be a natural leader in the world without trying to stole territory from it. But make no mistake, temptation is about to come back and this is where we will see if Japan can stay pacific against a younger warlike China. It is easier to be told than make.

I doubt there will be a second chance for Japan if it were to fail the adult world again.
