In other words - "America, stop supporting countries which we want to bully."

45 ( +46 / -1 )

And he said that “some neighboring countries” are using America’s so-called pivot to Asia as an opportunity that has “stirred up some of the problems which actually make the South China Sea and East China Sea not so calm as before.”

Fang went on to say that he is "disgusted that these countries which formerly accepted our ever-expanding unilateral territorial claims are now starting to stand up for themselves," a trend he says cannot continue if China is to continue to exercise undue authority in Asia.

27 ( +29 / -1 )

Fang made it clear that Beijing believes the drilling is in China’s territorial waters and said, “we cannot afford to lose an inch” of that territory, which has been passed down by ancestors...Speaking through an interpreter, Fang blamed any provocation on other nations in the region, including Vietnam and Japan.

If they're going to remain so inflexible, there is no reason to engage China only a friendly basis.

These "new great power relations" are going to fail because the CPC will not make concessions on their bogus and illegitimate claims.

I'd like the US to approach the CPC a bit more sternly in the future, or the PRC will get more and more aggressive and war will erupt.

18 ( +18 / -0 )

It's pretty sickening watching the Chinese dictatorship spouting the same propaganda to support their aggression through their Foreign Ministry and the PLA.

20 ( +22 / -2 )

Fang made it clear that Beijing believes the drilling is in China’s territorial waters and said, “we cannot afford to lose an inch” of that territory, which has been passed down by ancestors.

This is the key point: that every piece of land or water that was ever under Chinese control should now belong to China. By this argument, which ignores the existence of the national bourdaries of the modern world, most of China could just as well be said to belong to Mongolia.

20 ( +20 / -0 )

Russia needs to spill the beans on what ever then are hiding concerning China.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Typical China. Lets invade and stir up the neighbors and then blame some one else !

17 ( +19 / -2 )

China needs to be taught a lesson in humility for all their bullying. I hope Japan hurries up and revises their constitution and build a strong deterence together with the U.S., Vietnam, and Phillipines to precent China's aggressive land-grabbing and unilateral moves.

15 ( +19 / -4 )

China will lose a lot by pissing off all her neighbors simultaneously and ending up with North Korea as her only friend isn't much consolation nor is it worth all the damage.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

china, if you are so sure of your claims, take them to the international court of justice. otherwise, you will be nothing but a bully.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

China claimed entire South China Sea belong to them, this is insane. Something has to be done before it is too late. Obviously they have no respect for the international law and no longer fear the force of the United States of America. Japan have to tread the water very carefully and get your act together before it is too late just like what we see the last few days in South China Sea. This is a very big problem to be ignored.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Geez I hate China's government. No wonder they have so much terrorism going on there these days, and they way they are going it's only going to get worse.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Regional stability can no longer be taken for granted. Has the pendulum swung too far toward pessimism? Is it always naive to suppose that Asia could ever put past strategic rivalries behind it? (This is a region where three great powers, the United States, China and Japan, rub shoulders plus a fourth former one, Russia.)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

s t u p i d china

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Ultimately there will be a naval alliance of the US with not only Japan but also Philippines and Vietnam and Australia and India.

China, by itself, could win over any one of these except the superb US Navy, but when you combine even the current naval resources of these other nations, ignoring the improvements we can expect in the other nations, China does not stand a chance.

At some point China will have to decide if they want economic expansion, or if they want to be simply the big bully of the Western Pacific.

Her choice.

The session comes on the heels of a mob riot targeting Chinese at a Taiwanese steel mill in Vietnam and anti-China protests over Beijing’s deployment of a deep sea oil rig about 150 miles (240 kilometers) off Vietnam’s coast.

Scapegoat of Vietnamese mobs anger directed to ethnic Vietnamese Chinese and Taiwanese business. Mobs should realized that business provide the jobs for poor Vietnamese, pay Tax to Vietnam authority and contributed local economy. Ethnically, Taiwan may be Chinese descendants. However they are different political entities. The victims of riots are nothing relate with PRC government.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/15/vietnam-anti-china-protests-oil-rig-dead-injured

Stupid uncivilized local mobs for killing the Goose which is supplying a gold egg for their rice bowls. Even in WWII, Japanese soldiers did not torch and burn Japanese born Chinese of Yokohama and Nagasaki. The same thing is US citizens did not go and kill Chinese residents from San Francisco during Korean war. Vietnam has showed true uncivilized color to major investor Taiwan.

Nationalist mobs on the road grow up and join the army instead of committing unspoken crime.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

China says U.S. must be objective about Asia tensions

Yes, they should be more objective. More objective in putting a stop to China's aggressive expansionist actions that is. China is backing itself into a corner with North Korea. Soon enough, both will be pounded into dust and forgotten about. It's no more than they deserve. China has become a joke. They are the embodiment of the spoiled child claiming everything as "mine!" and throwing a tantrum every time someone says "no!"

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Take one to no one, Chinese people went on a rampaged and destroyed Japanese factories. What is the different? No one dared to condemn their actions because they all too scary that China will retaliate and make it difficult to do business in China. Take two to tango!

13 ( +13 / -0 )

@Octagon: I agree that any violence and senseless destruction of properties must be condemned. Sadly, there will always be opportunists joining the mass looting, stirring the peace in any civil unrest events in our history.

Thanks for the news and info. Apparently the industrial complex Formosa in the north is under construction by a China's based contractor with a few thousand China's national workers and supervisors onsite. You know what they can be like as bosses.

The local Vietnamese workers are treated differently on those construction sites, some have not been paid for a few months. In this case, Formosa management has created such a unfavorable working condition on site and just simply waiting for industrial trouble.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

China will lose a lot by pissing off all her neighbors simultaneously and ending up with North Korea as her only friend

Pretty sure this is already the case. Can you name any countries that would stand up and call PRC a friend?

Pakistan is pretty much a fair weather friend. I guess there's always Zimbabwe and that delightful man Mugabe in the communist's corner.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Russia perhaps more so than North Korea. China even seems sick of DPRK these days.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

@Octagon: One more thing !.

Taiwan's businesses should learn from this event. Using China nationals to supervise and manage local workers in Vietnam, Philippine or other non Chinese speaking countries will create more trouble than its worth.

Learn from the US, Japan, S Korea, and others multinational corps to hire as much local workers as you can. A basic HR management 101 stuffs !

3 ( +7 / -4 )

China move shows disrespect to weaker nation but at least they are more carefuller when dealing with Japan for now.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The world really needs to hit China where it hurts and stop making it richer.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Well at least the Chinese rhetorics are consistent with all neighbors "this is now mine and you should be happy about it", and " Why are you provoking and attacking us and our land/sea". Japan must be pleased with themselves for choosing to respond strongly from the beginning. Its becoming clearer that they did the right thing. I wonder when China will start the same kind of campaigns inland, for instance against mongolia?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

....And look the other way as China expands because nah, nah, there is nothing any country can anything about China's expansion. Good luck, everyone.

Chinese people went on a rampaged and destroyed Japanese factories. What is the different?

Simple. The Chinese government is always right, every other government is always wrong.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Why is this news and why are so many people upset about this?

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

Ref#Kenny76 - Local law makers should not allow foreign companies bring in their workers with the exception of technical expertise but not labour level. China constantly behaves in this way all over the world. They have no respect for the local. At the end of the day I put all the blame on the law makers and politicians. Enough is enough and it is time to act and let them know bully is not acceptable in 21st century. Ref# 25psot- Japan is not an easy target for bullying. China will stay away and focus on smaller nations with lesser force for now. Don’t let your guard down Japan “be alert and be alarm”

Kenny76 MAY. 16, 2014 - 12:06PM JST

One more thing! Industrial dispute has nothing to do with burning factories and killing other people. If Formosa business do not pay the fair wages and make decent condition, they should be sent to the court for compensation. Not only Taiwanese business but also Japanese and Korean business have hired Chinese supervisors. They may be from HK, Taiwan, US, Canada and everywhere else in the world. The language of business is productivity.

If local Vietnamese supervisors are less productive, skilled and incompetent, they can not expect to be treated like Japanese, Chinese and Korean skilled foreman or technicians. Training someone take time and higher cost. Business prefer to hire someone who has been trained or experienced.

One more thing is mobs can not distinguish Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese. Mobs has torched and destroyed many Korean and Japanese factories too. Japan and ROK are thinking about their business damage too. Vietnam has lost the reputation as low cost and preferable destination. It will make as less competitive and backward nation. Vietnam should learn from Singapore and PRC how foreign investment can transform the backward nation as modernized nation.

Take one to no one, Chinese people went on a rampaged and destroyed Japanese factories. What is the different?

The difference is no one died during PRC riot and one factory has been burned in China. Some Japanese shops, properties and car have been damaged. Scale was smaller than Vietnam riot. Vietnam has over reacted to foreign business. If Vietnam is not happy, they should send navy to Paracel Island. Burning foreign factories will not make any difference for territory dispute.

I guess mainland Chinese authority are more protective for foreigners. In Shanghai, there are many Japanese business people during the riot. They could sleep soundly at night. Vietnamese mobs may be encouraged by local authority.

China, please SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY. EVERYONE, well except NK, maybe, is sick and tired of hearing your BS daily and thinking that you actually think we all are too stupid to see what you'rr trying to do.

China, look in the mirror, it's you that is too stupid to see that we all know what you're trying to do. It may have been a tad amusing at the beginning but really, it's way past boring now and has become terribly annoying so please, SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY!!!

China, fix your own problems at home and leave everyone else alone you snotty little child that stole your parents' savings and is hell bent bossing the neighbours around with all your ill gotten gains.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Zenpun, not true. No Japanese died in the riots, but Chinese nationals died or were permanently disabled because of these anti-Japan riots. It is no different, Vietnamese themselves were killed in these anti-PRC riots in Vietnam.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Burning Japanese factories is ok but it is not ok to burn Chinese factories? A riot is riots so do not try to justify one action to another. They all serve the same purpose.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Ignorance is bliss for China. Let's grab those slices of territory, ram opposing ships, place oil platforms and suck the resources from others while telling everyone that we are the innocent child, they surely will see it the same way. There's a word for what China is: parasite.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

I do not think the Chinese people are that bad but the Communist party is sure rotten to the roots. China needs to respect other countries and maybe get back respect in retrospect. Asia is becoming one of the biggest Economies in the world and China is not helping by land grabbing. We should all work together as Asians. If you claim land according to history then might as well set an example by giving back Ughyer's and Tibetans their land first. China is already a capitalist market, it will not be difficult to turn to a democratic government where the Chinese people have freedom of speech and basic human rights. I have many Chinese friends who are awesome, one of the best. Lets not generalize all Chinese because of a few commies in Mao suits. Peace.

I will translate this pseudo-aiguo garbage that you've put up there for everyone else. "It's never our fault, because we are Chinese, and we are world power, and you are not."

The PRC is today's modern imperialist, it's just too much more easier and tempting to blame everyone else because well, "everyone else did it before, so it's okay for us to do it".

I'm a Chinese person and I completely and utterly reject the vile, and evil whitewashing that you project. Your attempts at painting others at "causing chaos" is merely a translation at people saying no to the outrageous demands of the PRC, which then gets twisted as "provocations" and "arrogance" by the PRC.

I say this again for the people of the world to see - any so called official media by the PRC, or any state-mandated source, is worth nothing and should be treated as such.

Tohka May. 16, 2014 - 02:12PM JST

It is not true. One Chinese national driving Japanese car was badly bashed. However he did not die. He got some trauma and his brain has swelled. I did not support PRC mobs and their actions. However PRC security force are heavy handed even for foreign journalists. It is good for security and law and order. Thanks God I have the business in PRC and Cambodia. Not in the wild west and lawless Vietnam.

MyJT2014May. 16, 2014 - 02:44PM JST

Burning Japanese factories is ok but it is not ok to burn Chinese factories?

If you refer to Tohka post no Japanese has been harmed in PRC riot. Again your post is exaggerated. Burning Japanese flag has existed. No Japanese factories have been burned. Some Japanese shops have been hit with stones by Mobs. However no Japanese has got scratch like Vietnam riot. Unlike Vietnamese uncivilized thugs and murderers, they did not kill anyone. Vietnamese mobs can not choose which one is Japanese or Korean or Mainland Chinese because they are illiterate for English, Japanese,Chinese and Korean language. What ever you have defended Vietnam, Vietnam mobs have foreigners blood. They will be sent to the local court according local law.

As the Taiwanese news agency CNA reported, the rioters targeted factories “with signs bearing Chinese characters or those with Chinese nationals as managers, many of which are actually Taiwanese companies.” Factories owned by Japanese, South Korean, and Singaporean citizens were also damaged in the riots.

@Octagon..@Zenpun.. @sanyuyulai...

Taiwan hired ultra China nationals as slave driver in factories and construction sites in Vietnam for larger profits. No wonder the local workers can't tell the difference between China and Taiwan businesses there.

The riot at Formosa construction site is a tit for tat between china workers and the local workers. Sadly injuries and fatalities on both sides..

China started it all and must be responsible for the chaos in the region. Put your blame squarely on the hostile Chinese regime and claim your compensation.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Obviously Fang has a very subjective view as to what constitutes objectivity. But he is no different from any other nationalist who wears the 'my country right or wrong' glasses to inform their views of the world. He just happens to be a nationalist from a country that is hands down causing most of the tensions in the region.

How about the Singapore business, Korean business and Japanese business? Have they had tit and tat between imported and local workers? Sadly injuries and fatalities on minority side. Even Vietnam born Chinese who can not talk single word of Chinese have been targeted. It should be called as ethnic cleansing. It was politically motivated riot! Not the normal industrial conflict between local and foreign workers. Vietnam authority has blood in the hands for cheat provocation.

China started it all and must be responsible for the chaos in the region. Put your blame squarely on the hostile Chinese regime and claim your compensation.

If it is true, why not mobs went to attack the PRC embassy or PRC officials residing in the Vietnam. If Vietnamese nationals are honest and open minded, they should attack PRC officials instead of foreign business. Taiwan will not claim the compensation as money. There are many Vietnamese nationals working in Taiwan too. If Taiwan locals claim their blood as compensation, Vietnamese nationalists should not cry as arrogant fools. According Buddha, there will be pay back cycle for offender of Sin. Vietnam should be solely blamed for cold blooded murder of foreigners.

Japan has territory dispute with China too. There are many Chinese workers and students in Japan. No Japanese has torched and killed with uncivilized and barbaric manner of mobs from Vietnam. Ordinary people are not influential for territory conflict.

@Athletes: It's just an industrial disputed on the construction site run by those ultra China nationalists. No point in spreading rumors to make it sound bad and stirring up the peace. One of my friends is a Chinese ethnic with a family living in Vietnam. She calls her family every week, and life is normal, their ice cream business is booming due to the unusual hot summer there atm.

I won't read China's state news, because it designed for the tiny world in the bottle. Read those more accurate information by international reporters on site.

Here do a Google translate, and read this to see how the injured Chinese workers are being cared for by Vietnamese nurses and doctors. The injured Vietnamese workers are sent to the different hospital. I won't mind being nursed like that when sick :). Can you call this as a hostile act ?

I do not get any cent for making rumors. As a business traveler, I am frustrated about Vietnam lawlessness and injustice for foreigners who have made their nation richer. I guess you have just read your nation media propaganda. Vietnam and China are both ruled by one communist party with controlled media. Anyway, I am not a fan of China or Vietnam. I am absolutely neutral. Pls refer to the unbiased media without Vietnam or Taiwan or China.

Have you read any of the international media as suppliers of accurate information as you said?

There is the problem of Vietnamese mobs can not choose Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Singapore and Mainland Chinese are different business. Vietnamese authority has failed to protect the non related business.

how the injured Chinese workers are being cared for by Vietnamese nurses and doctors.

How about dead Chinese worker being torched alive? In HK, Singapore and Taiwan, there are many Vietnamese expats and workers. They have never been treated as animal by locals.

What does this even mean? Talk about a bunch of jibber jabber. An ally is different than a friend? Friends are good, allies bad? PRC is superior because they have no friends or allies?

The US has clearly taken a side. There have now been multiple declarations from the US that they will defend the Senkaku islands if it comes to that. The only reason they even give the communists the time of day is because PRC is so unpredictable that no one can imagine what kind of ludicrous action they may next engage in. Think of the US interaction with PRC as you would a sane person trying to calm down a drunken lunatic waving around a loaded gun.

Fang is an idiot. Don't swallow his propaganda.

I ask again? What friends does PRC have? Answer, none.

Vietnamese nationalists are offended when the truth have been prevailed by international media. No one said China is good for making Oil Rig without concern of others. However Vietnam should target the source of the problem instead of releasing anger over scapegoats. If Vietnamese will start killing Vietnam born and raised Chinese, it will become another Genocide of Serbia. Serbia has been disintegrated for killing ethnic Albanians. Vietnam may become another Serbia.

Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for China...

Japan and Philippines are both moral enemies and competitor of territory of PRC. However no Japanese and Pinoys have torched, looted and damaged foreign business. Vietnam have gone too far with blood shed and violence at the moment.

Vietnam should defend the national interest with stronger Arm Force. Making stronger Arm force needed more tax from business. As Octagon posted, if foreigners will not want to do business in Vietnam, it will make Vietnam poorer and weaker! Therefore Vietnam is wrong for targeting foreign business instead of PRC Authority. Hope you will admit two wrongs can not make one right!

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Vietnam have gone too far with blood shed and violence at the moment.

I"m sure PRC would love it if everyone just sat in a circle and sang protest songs. The communists are masters at ignoring that kind of stuff. Sadly, violence seems to be what is required to get the attention of the bigwigs in the CCP. Please protest to the PRC about their many attempts to push their neighbors around. Next time somebody may push back even harder.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Vietnam authority wants to unite the nation with anti China movement. However it went too far for destroying many foreign business too. The consequence is damaging investors confidence. It will drag down Vietnam economy. Vietnam authority who sponsored nationalist movement are lunatic, stupid and insane.

They should request US for sending Navy for blocking PRC project of dispute area. That idea comes from my kindergarten student. Why not Vietnam authority can think like my kindly kids!

If US will not block, Vietnam should request from neighbors. If they will not help, Vietnam has to stand on own foot.

Hidingout

Do you know both Vietnam and China are communists. If Vietnam marine killed Chinese marine , I have no problem at all. If civilian has been killed by mobs, it is the lawless nature. As an expat, your family member may share the same fate if there are anti foreigners violence from local even your spouse is local. No one is safe from racism. When you share the same fate, you will have compassion.

One more thing is PRC officials who are working in Vietnam should be targeted for their anger. Even they are civilians, it is still acceptable. Have a compassion for victims instead of your praising the criminals. No one has God send power to kill other unless they are fighting in the war.

Vietnam to request helps from America; you are kidding yourself, what Vietnam has to offer the United States or its neighbours. No money no honeys my friend. For a nation of 80 million people prepared to take on a nations over 1 billion people plus large stock piles of nuclear bombs, I don’t know what you call this, stupidity or extreme patriotic. If this situation occurred in Japanese water, it would be a different ball game. This is where friends and neighbours will be involved without a question asks. Let hope other nations in disputed with China have the same courage and confront them head on.

Presidents Bush 1 and Clinton both made serious mistakes by not condemning the Chinese government severly enough after the Tianamen Square massacre followed by the kangaroo courts and executions of detained peaceful protestors which followed. It was over 20 years ago but it's still sickening to think about. By carrying on business as usual with a nod and a wink, they both sided with the violent communist dictators instead of the peaceful protestors desiring democracy. The opportunity to send a message was lost then and look at the mess we're in now.

@Nathaw: I am a scientist, it is in my nature to do a proper research and report with evidences for my informative comments. Spreading lies and rumors is certainly not in my nature.

Here are my new evidences from my research so far:

(1) The authority in Vietnam is cracking down and prosecuting and few hundred rioters, and found evidences of being paid by some bad elements to stage the riots and violence.

(2) I used Google translate and read many readers' comments from Vietnam's news websites. This gives me evidences of the general population's attitudes and felling on the current situation. All are calling for peace and calm, warning of bad elements inciting riot, condemning the senseless destruction and violence.

(3) China regime is stepping the aggression activities in south china sea and propaganda, spreading bad rumors to divide and conquer. I guess China is trying to justify, and rally the support of the world community on the current aggression.

(4) Vietnam's PM is texting his people, calling for peace and calm, and warning of bad elements inciting hate and riot, and calling people to stand behind and support the government. No one know big bro China better than Vietnam. I guess they are preparing for the imminent attack from China.

My predictions:

(i) China will fire the 1st shoot at Vietnam's maritime surveillance ships and then play a cry wolf boy with the world as usual. Step up the attack with warplanes and missiles. Vietnam fight back and all hell break loose !

(ii) Vietnam's government then gradually change to the democratic system of government. Finally shedding off all shackles of communism and the bad ass red bro north.

(iii) Vietnam will emerge and grow into a stronger country, foster stronger friendships and ties with Japan, US, India, Australia and all Asian countries. Vietnam will then take on the challenging role of "Peace maker" in the new world order, and will do well on that role.

(iv) Vietnam will become a peaceful and beautiful country and it is lovely for you to visit both the North or the South.

(v) As for China, I certainly hope she will grow up into a responsible new citizen of the world, and take on a challenging role of a caring and responsible bro like a normal big brother.

Well, what can I say ? I am a positive person and always see the best in people

some of my friends think I should give up my day job and become a political analyst for some news corps :)

This is the longest post I have read. Actually if you read all of the links from Athletes May. 16, 2014 - 08:52PM JST, bad elements were introduced by Vietnam authority. The lies and propaganda comes from both sides. Another thing is Vietnamese media is same as Chinese media which is government controlled. Sorry to say that you have not linked any reliability and trust worthy links. Your debate is less credible without photos and news links. I guess when Vietnam has become fully democratic nation, I will trust the Vietnamese media as independent media.

There are real foreign business damage if you read the all links. Again Singapore flag has been burned. I do not understand Vietnamese mobs do not know that it was not PRC flag. The target is not only PRC but also all of foreigners. Japan, HK, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korean have already warned Vietnam authority for refraining dirty hands behind the violence. Will you be happy, if some mobs burned your science lab nothing to do with politics?

Vietnam has been visited by Obama before for giving assurance for US will not let Vietnam being bullied. Where is the US assurance for defending Vietnam territorial interest now. If there is no response from US, It is the sugar coated words for misleading Vietnam authority. Besides than Paracel Island has been controlled by PRC since 1979. There were no oil rigs and under sea land claiming from them. At least they have waited for so long without risking confrontation until 2014. Vietnam should be patient like them. If it is becoming impatient, there will be super power to be called.

Obama should keep his words for taking real action now. If it is not, his Asian pivot is just a joke for Vietnamese people.

PRC is wrong. Vietnam is wrong again for state sponsored violence. What ever you analyze the situation. No one believe that Vietnam authority did not involve in riot including my cat. PRC used water cannon not bullet at the moment. Getting the first shot.of bullet from PRC will be harder than winning the lottery. They are very conscious about not being seen as first striker. I guess Vietnam will end up footing the damage and loss of lives bills without gaining any benefit.

It is similar with Chemical Scientist experiment to others which went terribly wrong and causing death. The excuse from Scientist is I know more than anyone else. It is not my fault. Chemical explosive fault.

Viet Nam would not dare to provoke China in any shape or form . That's why for the last 30 years ,40 years it keeps retreating... retreating...from the pushing of big brother in the North. Finally ,there is not anywhere left to retreat. Usually , chickens will see the size of China and be frightened but for thousands of years Vietnam has been used to this. No one wants riots, chaos ,deaths ,injuries.. but if you can not avoid it ,what will you do? Japan is handling its own situation with China smarter than Vietnam ; but from history ,China NEVER forgive anyone. It is not in its nature to forgive or forget.

I hope you are right !. But when the new kid in the block is looking around for a fight to show off the new found ability, law and order will be ignored, the authority cannot stop the bully until it happen. Fact of life I guess !..

When it happen, you might not like to hear me saying "I told you so"..Lol. No one knows China better than Vietnam, and I guess Vietnam is preparing for an imminent attack from China.

@anbinh < but from history, China NEVER forgive anyone

That is the historical fact, you will pay for it now, or in 70 years time down the track...Lol

I am not sure whether were you born in 1970s? In my childhood, North Vietnam was helped by PRC for kicking out the US from their homeland. Vietnam has become the darling of Soviet Union and started invading Cambodia. PRC has also invaded Vietnam back in 1978. China was not old kid. It was wounded badly by Vietnam before.

In my opinion, Deng Xiaoping tried to teach the Vietnam as ungrateful old ally. However enormous amount of PRC soldiers on the road when they retreated after giving lesson. The answer was student taught the lesson on teacher! Not the other way around. No nation on the earth can afford to lose man power like PRC. Although the loss was fraction of their Arm Force, it was a wake up call for PRC that they could not beat Vietnam with traditional warfare.

http://time.com/100417/china-vietnam-sino-vietnamese-war-south-china-sea/

Vietnam bullied Cambodia. PRC bullied Vietnam. Japan bullied Okinawa. US bullied Mexico. Russia bullied Ukraine. No offense! Vietnam is cruel, cunning and cold as US, Russia, PRC and Japan. No one has clean hands as Saint.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Vietnamese_War

According my memory. PRC has suffered huge manpower loss. If they use old way of attacking Vietnam again, they will be totally crazy and mad. Therefore I do not expect PRC will use ground force again.

What PRC is doing is the art of war called as "fighting without fighting". In the Enter the Dragon movie, Bruce Lee sinked the opponent boat without using any punch or kick. He persuaded other man to go to boat first and cut off the rope from main ship.

Therefore Vietnamese people should be cool, relaxed and calm for not going inside the small boat like trick of Bruce Lee. The Art of War bible was published in China for many thousand of years ago before Vietnamese kingdom was founded. At the end, Vietnam and China share the lunar new year, food, martial art and many aspects of culture and custom. Vietnam know about old China more than any nations.

@Nathaw: I am the late 70s gen, luckily when most of the world's evil wars had just gone...

The Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 and wiped out 1/4 of the country population of 8.4 million at the time. There might not be much of the population left if Vietnam didn't kick the murderous pol pot regime out in time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_Rouge_rule_of_Cambodia

What I really don't understand is: why big bro China supported and kept such an evil regime in power for so long ?

__hidingout What does this even mean? Talk about a bunch of jibber jabber. An ally is different than a friend? Friends are good, allies bad? PRC is superior because they have no friends or allies?

[ “俄中不是盟国的关系,盟国要根据另一国的决策做一些事情,我们两国是战略协作伙伴。”

——俄罗斯驻华大使杰尼索夫

"Russia with China is not a relationship between allies, allies have to do something according to the decision of the other country, but a strategic partnership between two countries."

Russian Ambassador Denisov ] Are they not superior countries? Parents will never want to see their children cliqued-up instead of making friends or joining some healthy organizations.

子曰:“君子周而不比,小人比而不周。” ....Superior men keep harmonious relations with each other but they never form cliques. On the contrary, inferior men tend to form cliques but fail to keep harmonious relations with each other...rightfully right!!

"The US has clearly taken a side. " Yes, U.S. has taken one side; a side that is to help if Japan and Philippines are under attacked. As regards to the presumeably disputed islands, U.S.does not even recognize them as part of or under both countries' jurisdiction. Japan only administered unlawfully!

"Fang is an idiot. Don't swallow his propaganda. I ask again? What friends does PRC have? Answer, none."

Personal attack is not a good idea, unless one feeled desperate and disturbed.

PRC and Russia are friends, are they not?

Jackie Chan versus Chuck Norris ... or the Communist Party plus Bad Hair Cut Boy next door versus the rest of the world?

China sure is lining up a lot of enemies for the future.

The bad joke is ... it was Mao and the Communist Party who killed off all the "ancestors" during his purges and genocides in the first place.

It's time folks started re-possessing the "ancestral grounds" of Chinatowns all over the world!
