..except when they decide to sail ships though highly contested waters in and around Okinawa…there, fixed that headline
NCIS Reruns
Nanjing was nothing new. Note the date:
The Japanese troops entered Port Arthur on Nov. 21 and massacred practically the entire population in cold blood. ... The defenseless and unarmed inhabitants were butchered in their houses and their bodies were unspeakably mutilated. There was an unrestrained reign of murder which continued for three days. The whole town was plundered with appalling atrocities. ... It was the first stain upon Japanese civilization. The Japanese in this instance relapsed into barbarism.
— James Creelman, New York World, 12 December 1894

But at the same time detain people on espionage charges without a fair trial, blocks imports in spite of scientific evidence of safety and confront ships on disputed islands? At some points reporters should do more than just repeat declarations that run empty.

@NCIS Reruns Little Brother syndrome on steroids. In the long 1,500 years of the two civilizations knowing one another Japan was stronger for 50 of those years and attacked China twice in a span of 50 years.
Never forget Nanjing.
TaiwanIsNotChina
The Yuan Dynasty failed twice to take Japan. I think China needs to learn that its massive gut isn't everything.

That was terrible and you have to wonder if time does indeed heal all wounds.

No mention about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or mass sexual abuse in Korea and China. Just glorious freedom of navigation warships that come from America France Germany England and now Australia in the Chinese seas. Love Western media.

It definitely appears that in the long history of the relationship between these two societies, Japan has committed the majority of the abuses.
I certainly agree that Japan's past identity doesn't define Japan's current identity, and also that Japan has a right to commemorate its war dead, ie the Yasukuni Shrine, a modern target for misinformation and unnecessary hysteria.
Though it is amazing how all these rising sun flag waving nationalists get all red-faced and outraged over supposed provocations against Japan from China, but they don't even want to consider the historical factors that caused China to act this way.
"Nanking is in the past - get over it!"
It's all so contrived and fake. These people get so uncomfortable when you mention one of the worst massacres in recent history, but also act like China is commiting atrocities against Japan in the current day.
China's government is not a force for good but I am so sick of this narrative that Japan is always the victim.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Chinese seas only extend 12 nautical miles from real populated parts of China and halfway across the the Taiwan Strait. Quite simple really.
Fighto!
The Communist Chinese govt still banging on about Nanjing? Definitely using it as a smokescreen to divert attention away from shocking human rights abuses and genocide committed in recent times by the Chinese.

Clearly the point of the article is that a China wishes for better relations with Japan, no?
Anyway, massacres are a feature of almost all countries at war and Japan is just one of many…

Why on Earth would they not talk about a major historical event that negatively affected them and left them scarred for decades on the anniversary of the day it happened? It's their country. Just as Japan has a right to commemorate their victims of war, so does China, and regardless of how I feel about their political ideology, I will defend their right to do so. Especially a massacre that left innocent women and children dismembered. Literal horrors of war unseen for centuries. That's what the society you endlessly idolize did.
The one creating a smokescreen and diverting attention is you, and such sentiments on historical tragedies are quite frankly disgusting.
Japan is GUILTY. Japan is guilty of what happened that day whether you or they can acknowledge it or not.

China wants stable ties while throwing this into Japan's face every year. Good luck with that.

The Nanking Massacre is mostly a political farce. Without doubt there was an incident in the winter of 1937 where many civilians were killed. At the time Western observers claimed there were "tens of thousands" of fatalties. When WWII ended, the Republic of China (now Taiwan) raised the Nanking at the International Tribunal for the Far East (aka Tokyo Trials). The ROC submitted a figure of 100,000 deaths. The charge was not accepted by the Tribunal for "lack of evidence". Since then the ROC (Taiwan) has not made an issue of it. However China (PRC) which came to power in 1949 chose to make it a core anti-Japan issue and raised the fatality officially rate to 300,000. When scholars from all over the world pointed out tnhat the entire population of Nanking in 1937 ewas only 200-250,000, China (PRC) then revised their number to "Nanking including surrounding areas". The Chinese have a historical record of exaggerating numbersm be they deaths or distance Mao and his troops marched. Adding further confusion to the civilian deaths is that it is documented that numerous Chinese (ROC) troops abandpned their uniforms and mingled with the civilians, causing the IJA invaders to stop and check just about any male civilians of age. One fact that is overlooked is that no remains of a massive 300,000 bodies have ever been recovered from Nanking or it's surroundg areas. Defenders of China's figures have claimed that they were all cremated, however no evidence, physical or documented exists of mass crematoriums.
China supporters claim that Nanking is on the same level as the Holocaust or the A-bomb droppings, It is not, because in both of those cases we have witnesses and full documentation. Nanking on the other hand is predominantly heresay, taught in Chinese schools as historical fact.

What did they do here or say that was so controversial? The massacre is a part of their history. It's not something they can just forget, or pretend didn't happen.
Imagine how Japanese people would feel if they were accused of diverting attention away from discrimination in their country because on August 6th and August 9th they choose to focus on and commemorate the victims of the atomic bombs? That would make the Japanese very angry, and would be rightfully condemned by any rational individual.
Why we hold the Chinese to a different set of standards is rather illogical.
For the Japanese, August 6th and August 9th are their days to reflect on and commemorate the tragedies that occurred on their soil. I have absolutely no problem with China designating December 13th as a time for them to do the same when it comes to Nanjing, in fact I unapologetically support them doing as such. Only a sick minded individual would mock or attack their right to do so.
There are legitimate reasons to be against China and the CCP - I am no sympathizer of theirs and that is not what this is. But blind racial hate and sinophobic hysteria should be called out for what it is.

Mothers raped, babies bayoneted and worse.
That massacre was definitely a heinous event

@OA Yes, the Japanese were very good at covering up their crimes against humanity. See Unit 731 for another prime example.

Together will be stronger..
Dirty interventionism from west must be finished..

Some people here voted against China and and play like Japan is the victim. Sick, sick people. If only you were in the shoes of those affected. Some look to revise facts and claim it's a political farce. You go look over at what the people said for their generations, they'll give you similar answers. It's not a farce. It's as factual as the holocaust itself. If you can't justify that, I myself was part of history in which my grandfather had to hide from the Japanese in Malaysia as they committed atrocities upon the Chinese there. Had to eat monkeys. If you could relive their horrors, you wouldn't be talking and denying, and supporting evil. Shows what the lot of humanity has become today. It has called evil, good, and good evil. It's understandable. Japan reverse strength and the United States forces Japan and others into making sure she goes against China. Because China is the key to stopping Western imperialism, nobody who rules from the West absolutely allows that. They'll do anything to grip that power- but it's all the same. Elites rule from the same coin, and but toss it in different sides. The US could spend billions for war, but it's also crashing its own country. Sure, we might blame the government, but whose to say it only takes one two tango? All are equally unjustifiable regardless of what ideology or politics they put on as a facade. It'll be if Japan doesn't wake up to the fact- that they're going to have to acknowledge and take responsibility, and that being controlled by foreign political and economical entities of immense power, if they don't realize they're in a massive collective Stockholm syndrome and wake up to seek better relations with China no matter its government, it'll be used and like Taiwan, the US and it's allies with throw Japan to the wayside. It is best to remain neutral for now, in the case a war does happen, it'll most likely be the US to force Japan into acting against China. It's up to the ruling elites in Japan to figure it out what their futures will be. I can definitely agree that it isn't Japan celebrating with the West over the defeat of China. You may think so, but there are surprises waiting in store for the future.
Sarunghakan Feng
Oh you could talk about the genocides the Chinese are committing. Not as much as the West, I assure you. And the West is to commit even more in the future. You can't compare Iraq or wherever it has been to, especially they'll let Japan and China fight amongst each other. Because they're going to go to Ukraine or reserve themselves for a major war. They want all minds to be agreeable, save by the media before they actually go out and commit genocide. I could argue that the preparation of war, includes dehumanising races and in particular, the Chinese. They get the phillipines to be the same (after 200,000 dead), they bow down. Americans have more military bases than Russia or China combined. I can assure you, it's easier to defame someone and have them insulted by others, so you can easily fight them and the populace would jeer for it. The Nazi's did the same, and their own populace cheered. You think the West really cares about the Xinjiang abuses when they are carrying out atrocities currently in Syria, and Israel? They let the nations fight amongst themselves now. They'll blame Iran, which has been their target for sometime. But off topic, I can assure you the hypocrisy is Jupiter-levels of amount. What Japan should agree on is, the tantamount need to acknowledge it's atrocities in the past, properly feel the empathy, apologize and hope China and itself can be forgiven, and rechange it's course. Yes, China too should stop whatever it's doing to impact its relations, but the Western media definitely is also implicit in maintaining a narrative of anti Chinese sentiments.
