China’s massive project to create islands by piling sand on coral reefs and topping them with airfields and ports has been criticized by the U.S. and others as militarizing the region

It is not just about "militarizing the region", it also sounds like environmental crimes of the highest order. Here we are wringing our hands about the state of reefs in the world and the massive bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef and China is destroying them wilfully for its pathetic geo-political gambit.

Despite constantly whiling about Japan and WWII 70 years ago, China is doing exactly what Japan did back then by going against everybody and trying to increase it's territory. China is the one that needs to learn from history.

Lu defended China’s land reclamation work in the Spratly islands as within its territorial rights

Territorial rights? Uhh, which ones again? Ohh, the ones guaranteed by China owning the South China Sea. I get it now. All we need now is the proof and international approval of these rights. Not a unilateral statement.

The Chinese monster is going to have to be put down at some point, they are out of control.

China is making a hostage from every economic partner, using bilateral trade for blackmail in order to get what they want. "If you want trade with us, don't do this or don't say that". The sooner China is cut loose, the sooner the world will return to stability. The economy thrives with honest economic partners, not with those using blackmail, counterfeit, robbery, exploitation or extortion. Those investing in China today will have reasons to worry. The Chinese demand to surrender IP as a condition to operate in China should be a red flag for anyone who can see beyond the nose.

Politics and diplomacy go together in pursuit of peaceful process in foreign relation of a member nation in international or world organization. A nation member is to follow the rules. Not dictate in the highest order breaking international norms. In June, the Court which said has jurisdiction render judgement on the Philippine case filed against China's altering the natural sea and land scape of South China Sea. Then, the Japanese ambassador to China and those #2 G7 ministers summoned will realize China, an outlaw fugitive nation, thus, deserving expulsion, or the world future beholden to Xi Jimg Ping, it's acclaimed leader. A leader of a nation or state is supposed to represent its people wishes not his whim. China a nation state?
