China, Japan reaffirm strategic relationship in rare leader talks

I don't think China can drive a wedge between the U.S. and Japan. However, there's no reason the two countries can not engage economically and even intellectually. Climate change and pandemic preparedness are two obvious places where the two can work together.

China seems to be trying to patch up/improve ties to nations it has alienated over the past years. Australia, US and now Japan, all he needs to do is invite Canadian PM on a state visit of China and he will prove we are in the twilight zone. Still lots of nations he can make improvements with. Philippines, India, Vietnam, Taiwan and many more. But it is a start.

Time will prove if this is a blip or another strategic move to gain an advantage and put others off their game. With Xi, either could be possible.

"Looking to patch up strained ties"? Hardly. Xi is a dictator for as long as he wants, Kishida is on his way out. This is more a one-sided game of chess than diplomacy.

Are they both wearing lipstick? This picture looks like Xi has put it over on Kishida. Japan needs China much more than China needs Japan.

China's economy is in trouble, nearly 25% of young people can't find a stable job and foreign investment in China is falling dramatically. Now, Xi is ready to talk to the US, Australia and Japan with his tail between his legs.

Once things get better in China, you can bet Xi will turn around and be back to his old tricks again. Xi has no credibility.

Xi needs to lay off the lipstick. Kishida needs to stop doing whatever the US does. We know he's a lapdog... no need to make it more obvious.

There's no official diplomatic relationship between Japan and Taiwan because Taiwan isn't a country.

Yet.

When Kakuei Tanaka visited China on the occasion of diplomatic normalization between the two countries and met with Zhou Enlai, Tanaka initiated to touch on the Senkaku/Diaoyu issue. Zhou suggested then that that issue should be shelved for now which would be solved by wiser future generations.

A sign that China's economy and social fabric is failing so badly that Xi has come crawling back to Japan, as it has recently done to Australia and the US, and will be doing to more countries soon.

Xi thought that China was so powerful that other countries would just accept his aggression. He was wrong. He forgot (or, more likely, was too arrogant to accept) that China's modern development happened through opening up and working with other countries (and, of course, stealing from them - which he didn't forget.) No country - not even a country the size of China or the US - can go it alone.

Now after improving ties with Australia, China goes and attacks Australian sailors in the water, clearing a fishing net fowling HMAS Toowoomba's propellers, in Japanese exclusive economic zone, with its sonar, but not until it had sailed closer to the men in the water. They had to exit the water and reported being injured by the event. Likely hearing injuries.

So much for China looking to improve its image. Japan beware. It would seem from this latest event that the military is on its own page compared to the politicians of China.

Another dangerous action by Chinese forces to harass others where ever they find them. This is now a common occurrence and need to be stopped. Australia must ensure it blocks Chinese entry to the CPTPP while it continues to conduct dangerous activities against others ships and planes around the region.

It seems that whenever Japan initiated to establish good relationship with China, the U.S. came forward to botch it.

When Shintaro Ishihara, the late former Tokyo Governor, announced that Tokyo intended to buy Uotsurijima/Diaoyudao in a speech delivered at a Washington, D.C. gathering, that was the beginning of the deterioration of Japan-China relationship.                                                   

I always wonder if Washington wasn't behind the scene when Ishihara announced the purchase plan.

Indeed. And while it continues to conduct forced labor, genocide, IP theft, cyber attacks, industrial espionage, forced technology transfers, economic aggression, dumping, illegal subsidies, etc., etc., etc.

People who have the illusion that friendship can be established between nations are either not sufficiently educated in history, or perhaps they have a very optimistic personality.

If you can trust a communist country in the first place, you should actually live there. You should be able to feel the propaganda, information control, and state-led miseducation. Although there is a proviso that it must be done before being brainwashed.

What Japan needs is a trade system such as the TPP that does not rely on exports to China. We do not know when China Risk will be triggered.
