Screw China.

Cyber defense translates to mounting cyber attacks.

No. It means having data to attribute the attacks that are constant and continuing from China for the last 15+ yrs even after Xi agreed to end CCP cyber attacks.

I have to admit, the defenses on my servers seem to be working, as even the last Chinese state/university networks are blocked from access, so that some Russian and Belarusian attacks have taken more prominence around here the last 6 months. We see thousands, if not tens of thousands attempted attacks daily from those these locations in the world. We also see fewer from well-known VPS systems in "friendly" nations. Recently, a large number have been coming from Azure subnets, which I have no problem blocking completely, indefinitely. Systems and people using VPSs to visit our servers aren't the typical users. Often they are using a VPN or have a random server spun up for their attacks for a few hours until the VPS hosting company realizes it and cancels those accounts. The CCP are expert at creating new, fake, accounts. Not just Twitter, Facebook, Instawhatever, but with free email and free trial VPS options.

It is like playing whack-a-mole, so I'm very happy these blocks can be automated. We have something like 350K blocked subnets in our WAN router rules. All for "cause".

Is there anything that Japan and the US could do that would not draw criticism from China?

13 ( +16 / -3 )

And they should be.

Being ignorant about things reported widely is not believable.

It is a single line of text, nowhere there is written that I am ignorant about anything.

Sorry If you accepting you ignored something in a completely different article made you feel humilliated or something, but coming here with puerile taunts about completely irrelevant articles that have nothing to do with the retorical question asked only makes it obvious you never intented to accept being ignorant about something widely reported.

I guess you think following people around to "attack" them by copy-pasting things you find difficult to accept about your own comments somehow will make other people react the same way you do, but since the criticism applies to your appeal to ignorance obviously it means it makes no sense for other people that have not made such an appeal in the first place.

Cyber defense translates to mounting cyber attacks.

No it is cyber "defense" not cyber "offense". It is to defend against Russian, North Korean, Chinese and Iranian cyber attacks as well as non state hackers.

Some people want to see bad things in everything the west does. Defense is bad and actually offense, while offensive capacity is also bad.

I wonder why when Russia and China do it, it is benign or good as far as they are concerned. My guess is they are just on the side of evil and prefer it that way, but they see themselves as the "good guys". Blind to reality, but see what they want to see.

Knee jerk reaction from China to whinge about anything other countries do, while conveniently ignoring their own malign actions that are the root cause.

NATO is a defensive organisation and yes the A stands for Atlantic but unfortunately in our increasingly smaller and interconnected world the threats can and do originate anywhere, ergo the need to co-operate with others across the globe, hope that helps you to understand.

China’s wary? In other words, Japan should join immediately.

"militarist aggression in modern history."

And what about China's present time militarist aggression ?

China on Monday expressed wariness about Japan's official participation in a NATO cyber defense research institute, saying the security alliance has been strengthening its ties with Asia-Pacific nations in recent years and its "real intentions merit high vigilance" from regional countries.

It is not surprising China is wary.

The world is watching the result of NATO strengthening ties with regional countries bordering Russia.

Wait China has hypersonic missiles!!! Why be worried? Is it because once that crap gets jammed you can't do squat!!! People here don't get it, the missile is what it is a bomb, but it cannot do anything if the software gets corrupted!!!

I bet they do

At present, China is relatively stable compared to the United States.

It only appears that way on the surface because China doesn't have a free press and people cannot speak freely without being arrested. I have family in China. The Chinese people are seething with anger and frustration at their government. They see their economic futures diminished by Xi's increasingly anti-business policies combined with increasing repression. The dam could burst at any time and take if from me, the Chinese have hot tempers and sharp elbows. If they get mad enough Xi Jinping will end up like Nicolae Ceaușescu .

Japan and many NATO members could learn a great deal about protecting their nation's cyber resources from NATO member Lithuania. They take cyber security very seriously and have become quite good at it.

So, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Liar Lijian is urging Tokyo to "....stay committed to the path of peaceful development and refrain from doing anything that undermines mutual trust between regional countries... "

Yes, just like China is doing, in it's constant declarations that it fully intends to 're-take Taiwan, by force if necessary', as well as the 10 other international disputes with which it is involved in the region, from India in the south to Japan in the North.

Everyone should be fully aware and on their guard for the arrogant transgressions and bullying which characterise the Chinese Dictatorship.

Chinese Nationals working in sensitive industries, should be continually vetted & monitored, and perhaps relocated to less sensitive positions. As at present, they simply collect current technologies and practices and return to China to share with the CCP there... one only has to look at the Copies of Military Hardware on show at airshows to see this.

Maybe the Chinese cyber army (CCP hackers) got the message wrong, it may have being just a message to offer NATTO in a meal during the joint opperations???

Since in order to join NATO, Japan will be require to move all its assets including landmass to the Attlantic....

It is unfortunate to see how Japan allows itself to be used for the petty geopolitical ambitions of the US..

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian urged Tokyo at a press conference in Beijing to "draw historical lessons, stay committed to the path of peaceful development and refrain from doing anything that undermines mutual trust between regional countries," citing Japan's "militarist aggression in modern history."

He's got a good point there.

Looks like China is not critical here:

At present, China is relatively stable compared to the United States. The idea of "unlawful and aggressive" proposed by "accelerationism" is actually a conspiracy of the United States.

Is there anything that Japan and the US could do that would not draw criticism from China?

A basic reading of daily news will show the various ways in which Japan and the US perform actions that do not draw criticism from China.

There are a multitude of cooperative ventures the three countries engage in.

I miss President Trump because he led the United States to accelerate its development and its economy regressed for decades

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I think NATO should be wary -- all you would need to do to bust NATO henceforth would be to hack a school lunch center computer in Japan and you'd somehow get access to everything else online here.

Being ignorant about things reported widely is not believable. These are things that have been appearing in the press frequently over the years. It talks more about your bias in choosing from where you get your information than the lack of that information availability.

A 5 second google search would have solved that problem.

I thought the A in NATO stood for Atlantic. Or does it stand for 'action'. As in 'no action, talk only'.
