Seeing that I receive down votes, are you saying that Japan didn't say they will also defend these islands, including using the military. How many of you are willing to send your children to war over these silly little islands? I can tell you one thing for sure, the leaders of both countries won't send any of their children, yet they are the first to volunteer yours.

I see they infringe on smaller weaker nations. They don't seem to make similar claims to the north into Russian waters.

Like it or not, Japan has made this very same statement. I'm amazed that two countries are willing to go to war over a few uninhabited Islands, when they could simply share the resources.
