They may as well just pack it in and go home if 5% is the best they can do. Worse than a dud “Iranian” limpet mine!

But Yuichiro Tamaki, head of the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) told Reuters he would prefer to see a lower house poll soon to boost momentum for unifying the opposition into a viable rival to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's conservative ruling party.

A viable rival to the LDP can't be a hopeless mish-mash of conservatives and liberals. Yukio Edano seems to have grasped that, hence the reluctance to merge the CDPJ with other parties. Tamaki doesn't seem to have a clue.
