The ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) will hold its leadership election on Sept 21, DPJ Secretary-General Azuma Koshiishi said Friday.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's one-year term as party president expires at the end of September, but he is expected to be re-elected.
Meanwhile, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito Party reiterated their call Friday for Noda to dissolve the lower house and call an election after two bills on social security and tax reform are enacted, Sankei Shimbun reported.
Deliberations on the bills, agreed upon during cross-party talks between the DPJ, LDP and New Komeito, are scheduled for Aug 6 and Aug 7. LDP leader Sadakazu Tanigaki said that once the bills are passed, Noda should dissolve the lower house.
Noda said that he has not decided on the timing for an election and called on the opposition parties to cooperate with the government on getting other bills passed, Sankei reported.
