DPJ to pick new PM on Aug 29 if two bills pass this week

They should pick a reserve PM while they are at it. It will save them time in a few months down the road.

Kan was probably the best PM in the last 15 years. At least he was not corrupt like most of the pols are.

Of all the self-serving, blow-hard geezers in the Japanese government, it's the least of them, the only one who has actually managed to stand against a raging tide of opposition (literally and figuratively), who's being booted off.

ps. This flux of PM after PM is just as damaging to Japan's political and financial landscape as the incessant battering of a tsunami. Just when there's a chance that progress might actually have been made, it's all washed away in the spittle of a bunch of gabbing geezers who have their hands stuck in the coffers and their minds in the 19th century.

Seems the job of lawmakers is it out the PM as soon as possible, it's like their jobs to constantly find fault and kick the PM out.

It's sad. Prime minister Kan (DPJ) was the first one who has attempted to curtail bureaucracy's power and vows nuclear free futue.(He said in the public that he changed his view toward nuclear power plant, after the plant accident in March: It is not safe). Its obvious that LDP still have power over bureaucracy, that they have created and kept since the world war II. They used all ways including media and people in the internet to kick him away... its sad.

Great. Now all we need is an election to throw out the DPJ and the LDP.

I just want a PM who will stand up to the "tyranny of the majority" that is Japan's legion of soon-to-be-elderly baby boomers.

Politician after politician insists that the consumption tax must be raised and the funds diverted to handouts for retirees. They're already richer than their juniors will ever be, and had the advantages of inheriting a peaceful postwar world from their elders (who made huge sacrifices during WWII and whom I'm happy to pay pension money to), enjoyed safe lifetime employment with benefits and family prosperity on a single income, saw the values of their property go sky high during the bubble, and built their wealth steadily in an expanding economy.

Today's new graduates get none of those things, and have no representation in government looking out for their interests. For today's government, it's: Raise taxes! Run up huge deficits to be paid back "later"! Destroy the value of people's savings through inflation! Distract the populace with nanny-state sleight-of-hand like child allowances! Who cares how high unemployment goes -- everyone who counts is near retirement!

Just once I want to see a PM who isn't looking to throw everyone born after 1970 under the bus so that that huge no-longer-productive boomer voting bloc can have even more advantages. Japan takes great pride in its social cohesion, and even today Japan has something the world should envy. But when trouble comes, it won't be because of island disputes with neighbors or problems with resident foreigners or whatever other boogey-man they've cooked up -- it'll be because the simmering hatred brought on by generational theft will have boiled over.

@ThonTaddeo, isn't it the reason Kan is being forced out? I believe Kan has tried to stand up tall against bureaucrats, LDP and Godfathers (Ozawa and Hatoyama).

J. Gov is filled with too many failing non productive politicians and bureaucrats who only care about themselves. As you have mentioned above, a Japanese social cohesion and Japanese people have been spoiling them to get away with a murder in the past. There too many chiefs always fighting over power while bureaucrats are laughing to the bank. Very sad.

I sure what if Kan would leave of PM then no one problem will not be magic solved. New PM will lose time for understanding situation in Japan and think about it. So what? After 6 month will be another new PM? Yes, 15% for Kan is very bad. But rating is not God in Shrine. Each change of PM is kick to Japan. That situation is good for USA and China but very bad for all world.
