"People are trying to make this about the United States and protectionism. That's not the case at all," he said at a news conference. "This is about the United States wanting fair and free trade. ... We very much support the idea that trade is important for the global economy, but it's got to be on fair and reciprocal terms."

This is what Trump has been saying for two years, but protectionist countries that have restrictive trade barriers refuse fair trade. They want to keep their huge surpluses in their favor. They will do everything in their power to continue to do so.

Pierre Moscovici says, "Protectionism, I want to insist on that, is good for no one,"

Moscovici, should practice what he preaches.

Trade has already been unfairly balanced in favor of the USA for far too long. They have the largest economy in the world, and have been winning at trade, while the rest of us give them our money. If the US is going to be fair, they need to drop their expectations on profits.

This is what Trump has been saying for two years, but protectionist countries that have restrictive trade barriers refuse fair trade. They want to keep their huge surpluses in their favor. They will do everything in their power to continue to do so.

Why would they care about trade surpluses, as these are not directly related to the success of an economy. This is just something that foolish Americans have come to believe as a result of the lies told by their elite, who are trying to deflect attention away from the fact that America has been winning the trade game for decades now, but the people at the top are not letting that money funnel down to the people at the bottom.

This comment also misses the point that America has some of the strongest protectionist trade barriers in the world, through subsidies for their farmers whatnot.

Americans may fall for the lies of their elite, which will actually give their elite more strength through backing of their people. But the rest of us need to fall for this silly lie that the American elites are spouting. Nay, in fact we cannot afford to fall for this lie, or we will never have any strength in bargaining with the US again. If we fall for their lies, and bargain with them under the assumption of this lie, we are telling the US that they can frame lies however they want, and the rest of us will accept it.

America has started a trade war with the world, which was pretty stupid since they were already the primary benefactors of trade agreements, but now that they've started it, the rest of us cannot afford to lose it.

Let's keep making trade agreements that bypass the US, and remove our eggs from their basket. It's just too dangerous for the rest of us.

Yes, more words will solve this.  Just got to look at Lagarde and her cronies who have consistently broken rules and ruined the economies they have run to understand they couldn't fix even the most simple problems.   Protectionism has already been a feature of global trade for a long time.  EU among the worst offenders.  East Asian nations not far behind.  In this case Trump is just calling this out.

Who is the rest of us?

Who is the rest of us?

The entire rest of the world.

In 2008, the US economy collapsed, due to crap legislation. The ripples affected the economies of the entire rest of the planet.

In 2016, the Americans showed that their electoral system is not a true democracy, by putting the candidate with less votes in the position of president.

In 2016, America also showed us that as a group, they are not intelligent enough to have seen how horrible a candidate Trump was.

In 2018, Trump started trade wars with his immediate neighbors (Canada and Mexico), Most of Europe, and China.

After seeing that the US is not smart enough to elect a leader who has a clue what he's doing with economics, seeing that clueless leader starting trade wars, and seeing how screw-ups in their own economic system affect the economies of the rest of the world, we need to insulate ourselves from American idiocy in the future. We can no longer trust the Americans to create rules to insulate the economy, nor can we trust them to elect people who can ensure a good economy, nor can we trust any agreement they make beyond the current president, which means that with the current president any effort made to come to an agreement with him may be made useless in 2.5 years, if he gets elected to.

Who is 'the rest of us'? 'The rest of us' is the rest of the world.

I love American people in general. Super friendly, mostly with good intentions. But the leadership of the country is an absolute mess. We need to insulate ourselves from their mess.

"In 2016, the Americans showed that their electoral system is not a true democracy, by putting the candidate with less votes in the position of president."

I assume that some are not familiar with American history and as to why our Founding Fathers put in place the Electoral College. This is to prevent a few large congested areas from controlling the election. Most American Presidents are elected by the Electoral College.

"In 2016, America also showed us that as a group, they are not intelligent enough to have seen how horrible a candidate Trump was."

Millions of Americans that elected Donald Thump to our highest office, The Presidency of the United States of America will not agree with this statement. We Americans do not mind being told, we are not intelligent enough, as we know better.

"After seeing that the US is not smart enough to elect a leader who has a clue what he's doing with economics, seeing that clueless leader starting trade wars,"

It is OK to tell us we are not smart. It is ones right to do so, although millions of Americans will disagree. Trump has no desire to start a trade war, but if this is what it takes to get fair trade, so be it!

"I love American people in general. Super friendly, mostly with good intentions. But the leadership of the country is an absolute mess."

America is not a mess, America is on a roll, new industries, high employment and things will even get better with the excellent leadership we now have in the White House.

Sadly, America is finished. The short term "wins" and stats will soon fade away, to be replaced by a generation (or several) of internal strife, simmering civil war, resource shortages and ongoing trade fiascos.

I feel sorry for the honest, decent Americans who have been hoodwinked by Trump and his cohorts.

Otherwise, it's possibly time this empire crumbled. Maybe something better will come out of the ruins, who knows?

Capitalism isn't all that, know what I'm sayin?

"America is finished." "Simmering civil war." Resource shortages."

This makes me laugh. I will pass this on to many in America, they too will enjoy these funny hilarious jokes.
