Surprised Donny signed that bill.

He had no choice - a veto would have been overriden in the Senate due to rare bipartisan backing.

Abe SHOULD invite Xi, no matter what goes on with Trump and the US. Who knows if Trump will even be in office next Spring!

As political unrest in Hong Kong has continued unabated and China has shown no sign of acceding to protesters' demands, some conservative Japanese lawmakers have urged Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to rescind the invitation to Xi.

If this is true, these conservative Japanese lawmakers have no understanding of the realpolitik of diplomacy.

Why should the invitation be rescinded at this point?? What has China done, at this point, to warrant such an action??

Has the U.S. suspended its trade talks with China even though this law has been signed? No. It would be ludicrous for Japan to rescind the invitation just because the U.S. has enacted this law.

Life goes on, for now.

"If the mainland China takes radical actions to clamp down on protests in Hong Kong, the (Japanese) government might be compelled to suspend President Xi's planned visit to Japan," the source said.

This, however, is a very different scenario. If the PRC were to deploy the PLA or other mainland forces in Hong Kong or something similar, then Japan may well have to reconsider the invitation. But that has nothing to do with the U.S. law that has been enacted.

Only a child need the permission of their parents, not a leader if a country

Quite honestly speaking, no one cares about what your said or what you didn't say. Stupid is always stupid.

Aren't the Beijing shils lucky enough that they can abuse and attempt to silence others from the safety of a democratic Japan? The irony being that back in China, they'd have restricted access to the internet and wouldn't be able to post their propaganda here.

Long Live Joshua Wong,

Long Live Jimmy Sham.

Japan can invite who it wishes, be it the dictator from Beijing or the wannabe from Washington.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Japanese were not special people, and will never be. Even the whole Japan sinks, China will feel nothing. That is physics.

Sounds more like bitterness. But ironically, you have the freedom to post your anti-Japan sentiment here.

Freedom is a wonderful thing. Maybe one day the people of China will be allowed to experience it.

Good for America! Such a strong country. Im happy to hear that now Hong Kong may be on the path of Peace. Go Hong Kong!

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Because facts matter, the bill was passed nearly unanimously by both the House of Reps and the Senate, so even without Trump's signature it would have gone into law. But go ahead and blame Trump if it makes you feel better.

Abe shouldn't panda (sorry - couldn't resist) to Pooh bear. If he wants honey from the world he should improve human rights at home.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Given both Japan and Australia need the US for protection and China for export, Abe can invite Xi to visit Japan yet he should learn from Australia how to deal with China on tough issues related to national security and interests.

Our relations with China is very important for many reasons including #1 trading partner.

I'll give you a better one, China has suffered the most during WW2 because of Japan, they have comfort women too, Unit 731, Nanking massacre... Koreas complain is small cake compare to what happened to China.

Yet...

They are willing to move forward, don't ask for compensation, don't ask for apology and then say it never happened.

We can influence China more as a friend and good neighbor then as an enemy or Trump supporter.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Next year, as of now the chances of that happening are less than 3% but after 2024, be patient.

Actually the chances are 100% unless you live in faux world.

In 2024 Donny might be in Russia, Putin will grant him asylum for sure. And for the GOP......

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Just say NO to communism and say YES to democracy.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

.Stupid people are always stupid. However, the freedom to be stupid is narrow defined freedom, and smart northeast asians will resolutely reject that kind of freedom.

If Northeast Asian's are so damn smart, why is Xi still in power along with the Communists in China?

Or are you really saying they are the "stupid" people?

ToastedH.

The irony being that back in China, they'd have restricted access to the internet and wouldn't be able to post their propaganda here.

i think you may find there’s a few that try, much to everyone’s amusement.

I say invite the Xi man. Get him over to see what a calm, mature, and efficient country can look like. Democracy with Japanese characteristics. One where the voices of opposition don’t have to be brutally crushed. How to be a grown up basically.

This indeed, as many pundits have been predicting, could be Japans ‘global moment’ where it builds bridges ,mediates and influences its way back to relevancy. Considering the alternatives, I’m all for it!

I don’t know why Japan wouldn’t want to play the field. Right in the middle is where I would be if I were Japan. I guess Japan wants to be some loyal samurai to the US. You’ve got to be loyal to your own country first.

Abe should have Trump and Xi sitting to his left and right and then buy oil from Russia and Iran. That is Abe’s hand, not bad at all.

Instead we are still stuck in the post bubble rut.

Between Despotic China and the US led by Dumb Donny, I would choose the US.

China will always be despotic, but Donny will be gone and hopefully in prison by next year.

Japan should be planning ahead to Welcome and Support the replacement Political system in China after the CCP collapses.

Good. who wants this scumbag- this chinese HITLER

This is why so many were against Japan putting all their eggs in one basket like China. But did the DPJ listen nope. They were more than eager to not listen just like today as the US Democrats are just as heavily invested. No worries, the LDP has brokered other deals to make up for the past mistakes in trade deals with other countries to make up the loss of China.

Abe is in a tough spot here. The US is the guarantor of Japan's defense, but China is the main driver of the Japanese economy.

Yes and no. The US is the guarantor of Japan's defense, but China is not the main driver of the Japanese economy. Japan found a way use China as a manufacturing base, but has other options. The question is, how long does Japan want to submit to the aggressors in Beijing? Remember, they claim the Senkakus and will not stop there. Eventually, Japan will have to stand up to imperialists in Beijing anyway.

Abe should follow Trump's lead. Speak honestly to condemn China's dictatorial actions, but nevertheless engage peacefully and make win-win deals that benefit the working class in both countries.

re: Yet...They are willing to move forward, don't ask for compensation, don't ask for apology and then say it never happened.

Yeah and so why is China the only Asian country aggressively and heavily investing in militaristic activities and sending threating messages to its neighbors and the US who was there helping them in Manchuria during WW2. Just the other day once again China threatened the US yet again. Don't ask for anything, by keeping its currency devalued. No China is set bent in having Japan taste its steel because of Manchuria and have forgotten nothing from that war. If not ask Hong Kong as China can't even abide by a simple agreement for a 2 party one system arrangement. Sorry but not buying.

may dim chance of....:

not talking to another neighbour.....

coming to these islands if invited.....

if politics are only inward looking who is to loose most

Prison? He has as much chance of going to prison as Adam Schiff.

American is interfering with the internal affairs of another nation. They are inciting riot and disorder. How many people will perish because of this action?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

While the Hong Kong protesters are very brave, they do not have a chance to win. I wonder how many will be killed, executed or imprisoned.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Surprised Donny signed that bill.

Trump is a freedom lover. He supports democracy for HK. He is being rightly cheered on the streets of HK with USA flags everywhere, and chants of "USA, USA..."

Xi, your not welcome in Japan until the will of the HK people, as seen in the election, is granted. Give them Freedom, Give them Democracy, Give them a future!

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

Good. Japan must make its anti spy law and repatriate thousands of Chinese spies in Japan.

God Bless President Donald Trump. God Bless America!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The traitor dotard Donald Trump, who is a puppet for Russia, has no concern whatsoever for human rights, as he is one of the world's major violators; moreover, the illiterate fool couldn't find Hong Kong on a map, or his own fat ass with both hands.

Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, India, and others should get serious and form a powerful alliance to contain and discourage China and Russia.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Abe is in a tough spot here. The US is the guarantor of Japan's defense, but China is the main driver of the Japanese economy.

Japan did that to herself.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

nothing surprising as Abe is the US puppet.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

U.S. President Donald Trump's approval of a bill in support of Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters may force Japan to reconsider whether it will really invite Chinese President Xi Jinping as a state guest next spring.

Gosh, I hope Japan is smart enough not to.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

So those provocating more military actions are also willing to sign up and join the military?

Been there, done that...and you?

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Surprised Donny signed that bill.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Wow ,Japan like a little puppet no bone USA tell him to commit suicide it will just do that USA telling t to jump it just jump.japan should decide on it interest not USA.time to tell the big brother non of your business to my nosing around Japan matter .

Abe is in a tough spot here. The US is the guarantor of Japan's defense, but China is the main driver of the Japanese economy.

-8 ( +9 / -17 )

AlexBecu, Abe isn't stupid, he is not going to disinvite anyone based on nothing. 2000 years ago, Japan and China had the greatest relationship during Tang Dynasty. As China rejuvenize, Japanese and Chinese will have even better relationship, that is the fate.

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Stupid people are always stupid. However, the freedom to be stupid is narrow defined freedom, and smart northeast asians will resolutely reject that kind of freedom.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

If, at the end of war, China could reject revenge against Japanese people and occupation of Japan territory, how would Japan not reject the stupidity that "Japan will have to stand up to imperialists in Beijing anyway" ?

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

The stupidest thing of all things that Japan can to is to upset China, by the stupidest people.

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

Japan, the world number one in debt, should educate people with some real things. Japanese were not special people, and will never be. Even the whole Japan sinks, China will feel nothing. That is physics.
