As political unrest in Hong Kong has continued unabated and China has shown no sign of acceding to protesters' demands, some conservative Japanese lawmakers have urged Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to rescind the invitation to Xi.

If this is true, these conservative Japanese lawmakers have no understanding of the realpolitik of diplomacy.

Why should the invitation be rescinded at this point?? What has China done, at this point, to warrant such an action??

Has the U.S. suspended its trade talks with China even though this law has been signed? No. It would be ludicrous for Japan to rescind the invitation just because the U.S. has enacted this law.

Given both Japan and Australia need the US for protection and China for export, Abe can invite Xi to visit Japan yet he should learn from Australia how to deal with China on tough issues related to national security and interests.

Yes and no. The US is the guarantor of Japan's defense, but China is not the main driver of the Japanese economy. Japan found a way use China as a manufacturing base, but has other options. The question is, how long does Japan want to submit to the aggressors in Beijing? Remember, they claim the Senkakus and will not stop there. Eventually, Japan will have to stand up to imperialists in Beijing anyway.

Abe should follow Trump's lead. Speak honestly to condemn China's dictatorial actions, but nevertheless engage peacefully and make win-win deals that benefit the working class in both countries.

Yeah and so why is China the only Asian country aggressively and heavily investing in militaristic activities and sending threating messages to its neighbors and the US who was there helping them in Manchuria during WW2. Just the other day once again China threatened the US yet again. Don't ask for anything, by keeping its currency devalued. No China is set bent in having Japan taste its steel because of Manchuria and have forgotten nothing from that war. If not ask Hong Kong as China can't even abide by a simple agreement for a 2 party one system arrangement. Sorry but not buying.
