Why does the AP always describe Fukuoka as a southern Japan "port city?" The smallish port is hardly a defining feature of the city, in fact Fukuoka doesn't even have the largest port in its own prefecture. Most major cities in Japan have ports. If they are not familiar with the city, why not just say a city in southern Japan. (Strictly speaking, western Japan, but one thing at a time...)
