Not political? Sure, pal.
daito_hak
It is political and all of this could have been avoided if he wouldn’t have behaved like a jerk and a fanatic. He’s crazy and he needs help.
asusa tabi
iran invited, with their morality police that beats girls and women; that gave all weapons to hamas for the killing, rape, dismemberment of innocent jews, including children (2023-oct-07); that weaponizes hezbolla that just killed another group of innocent children playing sports game. iran that is doing everything it can to have ATOMIC BOMBS is invited. israel defends itself from this, and is not invited.
mu-da
A politician who doesn't know the meaning of political.
Daniel Neagari
Well, I for once belive him... because politically speaking that desicion was very very stupid.
Expressing your discomfort towards what Israel government is doing could have been done in another way.

"Nagasaki mayor says decision not to invite Israel to A-bomb event not political"
Move on the damage is already done.
Tiger
I expect this trend to continue. Good on this major.
virusrex
Namecalling is not an argument, and he does not seem interested in avoiding anything. Saying that people are crazy because they choose to do something you don't agree with is something that could justifiably be called crazy.
What damage exactly? He came as an independent so it is not like he cares if Kishida looks bad and the presence of ambassadors is not an integral part of the ceremony.
JJE
That's right.
Russia's strategic counter offensive against NATO expansionism, defensive in nature and defensive of the Donbass in general, bears absolutely no similarity or comparability to the relentless, hugely violent, suppression of the Palestinian people by Israel which has occurred since 1948, with recent events alleged to be genocide.
Only a hypocrite blowing smoke would assert the opposite.
Fighto!
Three years running that the fascist Russians are banned.
Good decision, Mayor. No one wants them.

lol
other reason? Didn’t want to take the spotlight off the bike vs the millions they died in the concentration camps? Can’t share the spotlight.
unlike the Jews who did not start the war and were victims of it, the Japanese started this one and historically Japan would have strung it out as long as possible killing more Americans. The bomb show them they no more Americans were going to die.
Frankly speaking America brought peace to japan and rebuilt the economy with the influx of money and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Japan made a fortune off those 2 wars so when it comes to peace not sure how Japan is taking the high ground…

Nagasaki mayor Suzuki made the correct decision!
And the mayor seems much more politically astute then either Emanuel or the supporters of Israel.
The mayor is well aware that there would have been protests at the Nagasaki ceremony against the genocide in Gaza if Israel was represented.
The Japanese and international news media did little reporting the protests that took place two days ago in Hiroshima both at the City Hall and at the Atomic Bomb Dome.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Accept for all of the other times you issued whataboutism with Israel and Ukraine.
Indeed.

The US government told the American people the fairy tale that the atomic bombs were necessary to save American lives. Even the Nagasaki memorial museum has a panel giving that US explanation for its deed with no comment.
US generals knew otherwise and opposed the use of the bombs. The Truman administration overruled them.
The US government was nervous about relying on their fairy tale alone and so they forbade any pictures of the civilian deaths be made available to the American public.
JJE
Never have.
Emanuel is a rank hypocrite.
Israel's conduct since the Nakba has been much, much, more ruthlessly violent and discriminatory. Also been annexing land for decades. Words like apartheid and genocide are commonly associated with the incredibly cruel and racist policies enacted there.
Bellflower
Everything US ambassador Emanuel said was lie. JJE's comment about the Donbass and the Ukraine war is correct and something that the big majority of Japanese people do not understand. Emanuel is trying to leverage Japanese public opinion about the Ukraine war to gain support for Israel.
In fact all of US policy in Gaza should cast doubt on US policy in Ukraine. If the US is supporting genocide in Gaza would it make sense that those same US policy makers would be doing something just in Ukraine?
JJE
US career politicians have this warped, righteous obsessive-compulsive disorder complex that implies Israel's right to "self-defense" is all encompassing, covers everything and elevated on a moral pedestal beyond all else.
The naked politicization is obvious: Russia and Belarus have done nothing remotely as violent as Israel has, let alone their main sponsor and its accomplices, which are hardly innocent when it comes to brutal wars of aggression.
JeffLee
The mayor knows that may not be possible if the pro-Pally brigade shows up and causes the kinds of misery and disruptions already inflicted on the residents of London, NY, Vancouver, etc. He wants them to stay far away. So, yeah, not political.

Blowing smoke? It's evident you've inhaled too much of the hallucinogenic kind.
Wick's pencil
Who ever snubs Nagasaki is exposing themselves as genocidal servants of Israel.
GuruMick
Crikey...the right wingers are all over this already.
Israel shouldnt be invited...it's accused of war crimes by the International Court set up after WW2.
Israeli shills flooding this , trying to hijack a sensible decision.
Tony W.
If Israel had dealt with the Hamas people in Gaza with invading foot soldiers and tanks instead of seemingly indiscriminate bombing, it's modus operandi would have now a better image, and foreign politicians would not have to think twice about whether to invite Israeli politicians to their events.
Dri
We should in no way and for no reason lose our sense of guilt. Israël should know that, and at least try not to make such event worthless and meaningless. Well done Mayor.
Sanjinosebleed
Nagasaki mayor should get the Nobel peace prize! This guys is a moral legend!
Kurumazaka 2
this is how soft power dies.
Some dude
Russia (invades Ukraine for literally no good reason, to please the ego of a dictator, spends over two years failing to achieve its objectives, loses staggering amounts of equipment and troops, cozies up to other dictatorships, turns itself into an international pariah, crashes its economy into the ground)
Israel (responds decisively to a violent attack on its land)
People: "I lIteRALly Can'T TEll tHe DiffEREnce!"
Marco
Very good decision
Bob Pns
Every single estimation puts the death toll of both the Japanese and Americans at a significantly higher rate for almost every other war ending scenario. I’d love to see a source showing which war ending strategy outside the bombs would have resulted in less deaths. Can you give me a source?
kaimycahl
WTF but yet and still you invite officials from the country that dropped the bomb!
"It's not that we haven't issued an invitation to the Israeli ambassador for political reasons, but rather, we want to conduct the ceremony smoothly in a calm and solemn atmosphere," said Nagasaki's mayor, Shiro Suzuki.
Fighto!
Modern Japan and the US are as close as allies can be. Of course, American representatives are invited.
Japanese people do not harbor 100 year old grudges like certain neighbors to the west.
zibala
"It's not that we haven't issued an invitation to the Israeli ambassador for political reasons, but rather, we want to conduct the ceremony smoothly in a calm and solemn atmosphere,"
This antisemite mayor needs to resign asap.
WoodyLee
Thank you SIR.
Some may try to make it political, or even cry foul but the fact of the matter is Israel has committed war crimes and still doing as we read this article.
May Peace Prevail over Palestine, Israel, and Ukraine.
WoodyLee
Glad to someone with real balls stand for JUSTICE.
Gene Hennigh
The mayor said: "We want to conduct the ceremony smoothly in a calm and solemn atmosphere." He is most probably talking about the presence of protesters at the event. They show up at many of the public events like this across the world. Hence, it is not political, just as he says. He wants to preserve the decorum of the event and not have a circus. There is nothing wrong with that and it is such a probability that he has made the proper decision.
The political move was the US's. There is no reason for them not to show up and that is probably a mistake. Israel and Jews probably wouldn't have even reacted at all, if they even noticed.
Nibek32
Makes sense. Why would you invite a country like Israel, who is notorious for creating wars and slaughtering innocent civilians including children, to a memorial to pay tribute to people who died from similar atrocities.
TokyoLiving
Excellent decision...
Nobel prize for Nagasakis' s Mayor..
TokyoLiving
Biggest war crime in history..
TaiwanIsNotChina
He says while displacing millions and trying to turn Ukraine into a rump state by his own words.
falseflagsteve
Liar liar pants on fire
Bob Pns
How was it a war crime?
TaiwanIsNotChina
It's easier for the simple minded to focus on casualties per second than total number of casualites, which would leave Mao and Stalin clear winners.
Desert Tortoise
Agreed, but more because Israel has an illegal nuclear weapons program. By that same rationale representatives from Iran and Syria should also be banned.
Desert Tortoise
Not at all. Japanese soldiers were killing and eating Allied POWs by that point in the war. What the IJA did to China was far worse. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate military targets and Japan very much had it coming. I had family in that war, an uncle who lived his life disabled from fighting the IJA and a mother who was part of the Manhattan Project. You will get no apologies from us. And obtw, where are the gawdamm Japanese going to apologize for Pearl Harbor? How about it? When are they going to acknowledge and apologize for their atrocious biological experiments and vivisections of living humans including babies? I am not going to listen to any sniveling about the US dropping two atomic bombs on Japan after the decades of horrors Japan visited on Asia. In the end those bombings were a kindness to both Japan and the Allies as they stopped the war, a war that would have gone on another 12-18 months and killed another million at least if the two bombs had not been dropped. War crime my aching backside.
ianmac
100% political. Or 100% cowardice. Either way, 100% wrong.
ianmac
@nibeki32
I suggest reading up with the aid of more reliable historical accounts. In the 20th C no less than 3 wars of aggression instigated by a coalition of countries to wipe Israel, and its population, off the face of the earth. Unsurprisingly Israel fought back. If Palestinians/Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran et al recognised Israel's legal and moral right to exist, there could be a more peaceful future ahead.
GuruMick
"eating Allies POW's ".....
I have read Japanese versions of eating allied and their own soldiers in the Pacific War, in New Guinea.
I dont believe it was widespread, and the justification was hunger.
Have'nt heard of eating POW's though.
Posters should decry all militarism, expansionism and all cruelty of armed conflict.
Especially today.
GuruMick
Ianmac above.
Hamas accepts Israel's right to exist in it's revised Charter.
Netanyahu has consistently said "No Palestinian state while I am PM ".
A little nuance never hurt anybody
TaiwanIsNotChina
Start with Russia/China/Iran then.
virusrex
the mayor has not made any antisemite action or declaration.
GuruMick
Taiwan...change starts with you.
In International terms, this means change starts with individual nations.
I'm reminded of the various sections of the globe that have non nuclear weapon use and suchlike agreements with neighbouring countries.
Africa, South America, Pacific nations, for example.
The "but Timmy did it too " argument holds no sway with me, Taiwan {part of China }
Sanjinosebleed
HUH??? This guy needs to get off the sauce?
Self defence?? Slaughtering 30000 women and children Self defence? If genocide is self defence then the world has gone mad!
Just more hypocrisy!
Good on the mayor shows some true integrity!
Agent_Neo
It's impossible to count how many wars the U.S., Russia, China, and other countries have started and how many people have been sacrificed.
Why not invite all countries, regardless of their current situation?
There are fewer countries that have never been to war.
YeahRight
Nagasaki mayor lies when he says decision not to invite Israel to A-bomb event not political
There. Fixed it for you.

Replies full of zionists. You guys will never touch the promise land

You're right: Russia and Belarus have done far worse than Israel and are annexing to boot.
burgers and beers
"You're right: Russia and Belarus have done far worse than Israel and are annexing to boot."
Blatant falsehoods as usual, Israel slaughtered 40 thousand civilians in less than a year, genocide enabled and supported by Biden White House. How many civilians did Belarus wipe out ?
TaiwanIsNotChina
They supply their territory for the war of aggression at a minimum.
bass4funk
It absolutely is political.
Absolutely
Strangerland
Of course it's political.
Keep Russia out. They are useless.
TaiwanIsNotChina
The US isn't giving its territory to Israel for its war. And you are the one struggling to argue Russia isn't a war criming state rather than taking your lumps as you should.
Makoto Shimizu
Nagasaki's mayor took a brave and correct decision of not inviting Israel ambassador due to the daily war crimes being committed against Palestinians in Gaza. Not inviting Israel was a clear message of not agreeing with armed aggression against civilians, causing thousands of deaths of innocent people, mostly children, women, elderly, disabled, sick people.
