Bad news for the people of Kagoshima as the pollution spreads.

What a total and utter waste of money! At the very least, why not charge the US military rent to use it and recover some of the massive investment?

Going to build an SDF base on it by the sounds of it, so it will be multipurpose use.

So you want to charge the Americans for providing you with security. Is that the way it works?

There are more uninhabited islands somewhere like Magejima. More US military bases could move to such islands from Okinawa. Okinawans would be much happier about it.

Mageshima has been brought up multiple times as an alternative site for now Okinawa based operations.

Some people suggested it would be a suitable site for the Ginowan move, instead of going to Henoko, hence affecting far less locals.

But like many operations involving govt & private companies, there hangs a veil of shady business deals and going ons.

In addition as part of the Osumi Island group, with the World Heritage star Yakushima at it's center, any development will be extremely sensitive.

It is true we are state of USA. We should at least get a star on their flag.

The 'security' provided by the U.S. is a façade. In the more than 20 years I spent in the military assigned in Asia in general and Japan specifically, I can affirm that the U.S. is not providing security for anything other than their own business interests. The U.S. military has become nothing but a mercenary force used to enforce imperialism disguised as capitalism.

Another piece of evidence showing Japan is always cringing to Washington. Iwojima is about 1,200 km from Atsugi Naval Air Base in Metropolitan Tokyo, and so the U.S. military must have been looking for a location nearer to mainland Japan for carrier landing practice and used the USFJ realignment as a windfall, in which Atsgi-based carrier fighter jets to relocate to Iwakuni.

Mage Island is conveniently located about 400 km from Iwakuni, and, according to the article, the central government will purcase the island and offer it USFJ to satisfy their demand This is indeed another piece of evidence that shows Japan is nothing but a U.S. vassal always cryinging to Washington.
