Right step to backup JAL operations. Olympics will go to... other than Tokyo.

“If our rivals are moving ahead of us, we’ll cruise to the top from behind

That's got to be a bad translation or a show of no confidence.

Tokyo is the only city in the running that could use the facilities after the games are over too. But I don't understand why world leaders think they need to toddle off to lobby for the games.

What kind of logic is that based on?

He stayed overnight in a hotel in Tokyo??? Huh, aren't the Prime Minister's offices and residences in Tokyo??

" Japan has previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo and Winter Games at Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. "

And that is why Brazil will get it !!!! Plus Brazilian people are more friendly.

‘‘I would like to emphasize to the committee that Tokyo is environmentally friendly and the world’s safest city,’’

Enviromentally friendly how ? The air in Tokyo is not exactly high quality air, more like high quality pollution. I wish they check how much exhaust fumes come from the city buses. I use a bus to go to work everyday in Tokyo. I can't breath in the morning from all the toxic fumes coming from all the buses at the bus station.

Safest city ? Does he remember the Akihabara Rampage and the ( touchy & feely guys ) groupers on the train.

Just having one killing spree doesn't mean you can't claim the title of "safest city" in the world.

In the news today, Tokyo was cited as having only about one murder per 100,000 people or whatever while Madrid had two and Chicago (18) and Rio (over 30, I think) were off the charts.

Tokyo is definitely the safest of the four contending cities while Madrid is strong in this area, too.

Brazil did a bad job with the 2007 Pan American Games. Do you ever wonder why South America cannot match North America's economic might? They lack management skill. Rio would flop miserably.

Hatoyama needn't have bothered with this junket: Tokyo has close to zero chance now. They are the rank outsider, and if you think they are a chance, get on them - they are paying 25/1 at Ladbrokes! It seems Japan just does not have the connections to sway the votes their way - either that, or their bid plans are exceptionally amateur. Chicago has this one sewn up, folks.

PS I seriously hope that Chicago does a better job than the open sewer of an olympics that was Atlanta 1996.

Brazil should get it. Japan doesn't need more debt, nor does America.

Chicago is the absolute worst choice of them all. As fun as it was to have Tokyo in the running, my hunch is Madrid.

Madrid's a great city. And a dark horse. Rio is the sentimental choice and Tokyo would be fun. But Chicago? Well, they did produce 'The Blues Brothers' so they can't be all bad.

Safest city ? Does he remember the Akihabara Rampage and the ( touchy & feely guys ) groupers on the train.

Safest city of the one's listed yeah. Safest city doesn't mean crime doesn't happen, however if you compare the crime stats of Chicago vs. Tokyo, you're joking. Tokyo having a larger population and population density has much much lower crime rates then Chicago or Rio (not sure about Madrid though).

Please don't win Tokyo.

Don't worry gogogo - There is more chance of Godzilla appearing than Tokyo getting the Olympics. Most people know their bid has failed.

Hatoyama needs to practice this statement over and over on the flight:

"Eu gostaria de congratular o Rio de Janeiro na sua seleção para manter os jogos Olímpicos 2016. Você merece-o, e o Tóquio não faz. Bem feito!"

Then we'll see what a good sport Japan can be, instead of those spoiled athletes who sob and cry all over the sportsgrounds when they lose.

Go Rio! Go!

I reviewed the weighted ratings (environment, experience, public support, financial, etc.) yesterday about the proposed sites. Madrid and Tokyo were rated in that order the highest among the contenders. This is the first time I can recollect where the contenders are pulling out the stops to promote their respective sites tomorrow by sending their heads of state and government leaders to do the job. One area that was neglected about Tokyo's downside is the cost of living index being the highest in the world. If public support is high, it will off-set some of the declines from foreign visitors who might think twice about going to Tokyo. It is a question of economics all around and it appears Brazil may be the winner, if I were to put my money where my mouth is.

Please, Rio is by far obviously the worst choice. It's a shame because the South Hemisphere gets neglected and Brazil would be a great place to host it. But Rio? Has just slightly better chance than Tijuana or Angeles City.

One area that was neglected about Tokyo's downside is the cost of living index being the highest in the world.

Living and visiting are different things. However the cost of living index is highly biased. One of the factors taken into the index is the cost of a taxi from the airport to the city center. Great for some cities, but in Tokyo and Japan which has the largest number of public transportation users on the planet, not many people actually use taxis from Narita. So included into the index is the 20,000yen + taxi ride, not the 1000yen train fare.

Hatoyama and Obama could do a little one-on-one, or perhaps play go for 2 out of 3 games of horse, winner take the entire bill..........

??? they have no chance since they are not selected. urrrrrrrrrgh. as for Rio, I predict you'll be eating your hat tomorrow
